Khoya khoya chanda khoye khoye taare

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

“Where have all the loris (lullabies) gone from the contemporary Hindi films?’ This question haunts me as I don’t find lori songs in the present day Hindi films unless I have missed them. Alternatively I may have heard them but did not get the feel of a lori song. In a way, it is a reflection on our present generation where the lori songs as a soothing device on kids for putting them to sleep early has been almost forgotten. I find that at least in the metropolis, most parents have no time to sing a 3-minute lori to put their kids to sleep.

I remember my childhood when my mother would have songs for almost all the occasions that a kid goes through in his daily routine. She will sing while giving bath, making them to eat, playing and of course while putting them to sleep early. Apart from the filmy and non-filmy songs, I suspect, she must have sang loris of her own creations in Konkani language based on some fantasies as I had not heard those songs anywhere.

The next generation – my wife who would only sing a couple of non-filmy songs but rely more on some fantasy stories to put our kids to sleep. In the present generation of my family, I have never heard my daughters and daughter-in-law singing loris though they do sing some filmy songs which are not loris or some nursery rhymes to make the kids sleep. My 3-year old grandson who distastes nursery rhymes goes to sleep early as soon as my daughter-in-law starts reciting them. Probably he feels that it is better to go to sleep early than listening to nursery rhymes. 🙂

I do not blame the present day parents for this situation. I have observed that today’s kids are more attuned to some fastpaced songs than the slower ones like loris, thanks to various music TV channels. If this trend continues, it will not be too long when lori songs would soon become extinct. I hope the tradition of lori songs are still prevalent in the rural India to keep them alive for the sake of posterity.

I try to avoid listening to some of the lori songs from Hindi films of golden era as they make me nostalgic and in some cases my eyes moist while listening to them. But they are so soothing to the ears that I cannot avoid them altogether. In one of my searches for a lori song for which I had no details other than the tune, I came across a different lori song which I knew but had completely forgotten about it. The song is ‘khoyaa khoyya chandaa khoye khoye taare’ from DOOR GAGAN KI CHHAAON MEIN (1964). The song was written by Shailendra which had all the ingredients of making a lori song including some fantasies. The song was picturised on Supriya Choudhary and a kid who is Kishore Kumar’s son, the singer Amit Kumar. The song was set to music by Kishore Kumar. The tune is very melodious and soothing to the ears and mind. I guess this must be one of the best loris sung by Asha Bhonsle.

By the way, I could locate the lori song I was searching for, which I intend to discuss in a day or two.

Song-Khoya khoya chanda khoye khoye taare (Door Gagan Ki Chhaaon Mein)(1964) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Kishore Kumar

Lyrics

o o o o o
o o
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa
khoye khoye taare
so gaye
tu bhi so jaa
chaand hamaare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa
khoye khoye taare
so gaye
tu bhi so jaa
chaand hamaare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa

o o o o o
o o o o
o o o
leke jaadoo ki chhadi
aayi sapanon ki pari
roop nagari mein tujhe
chhod aayegi abhi
hai wo sapnon kaa jahaan
ek melaa hai wahaan
des pardes ke bachche chale wahaan
aan
neele aakaash ki gangaa ke kinaare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa
khoye khoye taare
so gaye
tu bhi so jaa
chaand hamaare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa

jhoolaa chaandi kaa padaa
heere pannon se jadaa
reshmi dor bandhi
jhoolegaa laal meraa
jab bhi tu poong bhare
jaa ke baadal ko chhuye
chhoole bijli ko to wo khilkhilaa pade
ae ae
aur chhup jaaye kahin laaj ke maare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa
khoye khoye taare
so gaye tu bhi so jaa
chaand hamaare
khoyaa khoyya chandaa

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
kahin koi geet gaaye
koi bansi bajaaye
aur koi dhol liye
dhin dhin tak sunaaye
sab pe ek rang pade
koi bhi bach naa sake
pyaar aur mel kaa gulaal yoon udey
hil mil ke koi jeete koi haare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa
khoye khoye taare
so gaye
tu bhi so jaa
chaand hamaare
khoyaa khoyya chandaa
khoye khoye taare
khoya khoya chandaa
khoye khoye taare
khoyaa khoyaa chandaa

It’s so true. We hardly have lullabies these days. This is a great ‘lori’. My other favourites are “Aja ri aaaa nindhiya tu aaa…” from ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ and “Nanhi kali sone chali, hawa dheere aana…” from ‘Sujata’

Heartily agree with all the sentiments expressed by Mr. Kamath.

The tune reminds me of the song “koyi lauTaade mere, beete huye din”. Surprisingly reiterating the sense of nostalgia felt by Kamath (and me!)

What a lovely post, Kamathji – and so true.

Indeed the tradition of loris has been gradually fading away from generation to generation. Every chance loris will get extinct in a generation or so. Changing times, I suppose!

This is a lovely lori – glad that at least we have loris for posterity, whether they are sung for babies of the future or not.

Thanks, Sadanand Ji, Very true . Very nostalgic.
Another lovely lory I like is ‘So Ja Re So Ja….’ from ‘Kathputli’, from my favourite MD -ShakarJaikishan.
Thanks for the post- K S Shenoy, Bangalore
