Kehta hai dil tum ho mere liye

Posted on: February 16, 2012

“Mem Sahib” (1956) was a lovely movie starring Kishore Kumar, Meena Kumari and Shammi Kapoor. This movie was a fun movie which was great to watch. And the music was wonderful.

I am surprised to realise that only two songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog so far. It is one of those movies which I have actually watched on my computer, something which I rarely do.

Here is a duet from this song. This soft romantic duet is sung by Talat Mehmood and Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised as a piano song on Shammi Kapoor and Meena Kumari.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and music is composed by Madan Mohan.

Shammi Kapoor (in his pre stardom days) is seen lip syncing in Talat Mehmood’s voice, which may indeed be difficult to believe for many Shammi Kapoor fans today.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye
mere liye
ji mere liye
haan dilruba hum hain tere liye
tere liye
ji tere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye

dil jaisa saathi tumhen de diya
sanam tera kaise karoon shukriya
dil jaisa saathi tumhen de diya
sanam tera kaise karoon shukriya
kya kya kiya
tum ne mere liye
mere liye
ji mere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye
mere liye
ji mere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye

kaho ji tumhaari
tamanna hai kya
nahin chaahiye kuchh tumhaare siwa
kaho ji tumhaari
tamanna hai kya
nahin chaahiye kuchh tumhaare siwa
hum bhi to jeete hain tere liye
tere liye
ji tere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye
mere liye
ji mere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye

basa do mujhe ek aisa jahaan
naye hon jahaan ke zameen aasmaan
basa do mujhe ek aisa jahaan
naye hon jahaan ke zameen aasmaan
dil ki yeh duniya hai tere liye
tere liye
ji tere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye
mere liye
ji mere liye
kehta hai dil
tum ho mere liye

Renaissance man Shammi and a melodious singer Talat, with couple of films with famous songs.
(1) Laial Majnu (1953) ..Aasman wale teri duniya se ji..(B) Chal diya karvan..
(2) Thokar (1953)…aye gam-e-dil kya karoo…
But his turning point film Tumsa nahi dekha.. For that film Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt was asked to play that role. As we know that both Dev & Dutt are not good at the dance. So the result wouldn’t be same…that for sure.
Think again…Janglee was offer to Dev saab…Dev saab with Yahooooo…
I do not want to think…Bending knees with two hands are hanging and walking fast on snow…just not right.
But yahoooo w/Shammi and his hair style (copy of Gene Vincent’s hair style) ..which was far better than here in this film 🙂

Atul ji,
MEM SAHIB-1956 was one of those rare films which had music by Madan Mohan but was also a popular movie and a box office success. In this film MM gave only one song to Kishore Kumar-Dil dil se milakar dekho,a tune clearly inspired by ” Isle of capri” which was a raging hit in India in those days.
The story of Memsahib was one which appealed to the audience and Kishore Kumar’s films in those days were very popular anyway.
Meena(Meena Kumari) is a rich girl living with her guardians-Chacha(Gyani ji) and Chachi(Munna bai). She is ultra modern and hip hop cultured. When the question of her marriage comes up,she gives an ad in the local paper and after taking interviews of the suitors, selects Manohar(Shammi kapoor) who is also of modern culture. When Manohar is presented to her Chacha-Chachi,the remind her that her marriage was fixed with Sunder(Kishore kumar) by her parents, before they died in an accident, she scoffs.
Sunder is brought up in the most traditional ways and presently is with his Guruji(Shivraj) in the Gurukul.Soon he completes his education and lands in Meena’s house with a long beard and hair. She totally refuses to marry him. After some time,Sunder decides to change himself as Manohar,i.e. an ultra-modern young man.Though difficult and funny he manages the change.he finds that Meena is impressed and changing slowly,so he takes her to his Father Jugal Kishor ji(Radheshyam) and Mother(Protima devi).
It seems Meena has not changed but wants to teach these ‘old-fashioned
people a lesson and show them what a modern life is.Instead, Meena in reality, gets changed herself to traditional ways and realises how indian culture is superior to western culture.
This theme was later used in some more films too,a notable and famous film being Manoj kumar’s Purab aur Paschim-1970.
Memsahib was a very hilarious film.

That behavior science has given a name it’s call “Cognitive dissonance” in social psychology.
The dissonance compels us to change our beliefs. If beliefs are moved, then the dissonance appears during decision-making, forcing us to take actions we would not have taken before.

I’ve seen this movie – it is indeed a fun movie. Kishore, after all. Shammi plays a negative role, which considering it was early in his career, was quite a bold move, I thought.
