1959 was the busiest year in the career of music director N Dutta. That year, seven films with music composed by him, were released. (Six of these films are already represented in this blog. ‘Naach Ghar’ is one film that is awaiting entry here). And the music of these films is notable and still remembered – films like ‘Black Cat’, ‘Dhool Ka Phool’, ‘Didi’, ‘Bhai Bahen’, ‘Mr. John’, and ‘Jaalsaaz’.
In this post, I present this song that is pure fun. With the intent of creating a fun song, if the music director can get Kishore Kumar to sing it, the chances are better than good, that one ends up with a real hilarious piece of music. The song is a fun filled duet rendered by Kishore Da and Geeta Dutt. The film is ‘Jaalsaaz’ (1959), produced and directed by Arbind Sen under the banner of Lalit Kala Mandir, Bombay. The film has Kishore Kumar and Mala Sinha in lead roles, with the remaining star cast being Pran, Kamal Chaudhry, Nazir Hussain, Achala Sachdev, Paro, Nana Palsikar, Krishnakant, Sabita Chatterjee, Sailen Bose, Nirmal Kumar, Madhumati, Baby Rukhsana, Shyama, Asit Sen and Helen etc. The lyrics of this film are by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music compositions are by N Dutta.
This song belongs to the category of ‘songs deleted from films’. Although this song was created and even filmed, it failed at the stage of censor approval. In the opinion of the censor board, this song was too raunchy, too hot and too explicit. It was removed from the film and even its broadcast was banned for a certain period. But then it was lost, and never heard of, for a very long time. The YouTube post of this song is just about 18 months old now. That is how rare this song has become.
That was 1959 – and the levels of tolerance, and the concepts of ‘not right’ were very different as compared to today. As I listen to this song, I am somewhat surprised at the decision to remove this song from the film. Nothing stands out as hot or explicit to me. Maybe, the second line of the second antaraa sounds a bit off-color, but given the kind of lyrics we hear in the films these days, this line seems like a glass of milk in comparison.
A small consolation – once the decision was made to drop this song from the film, the producers had to get in one more song into the film. The song “Hip Hip Ho Ho Hurraah” ,(already posted on this blog), was added in the film, at this stage. One can easily notice that the two songs are very close in terms of the melody.
Anyways, enjoy this racy, foot tapping melody from the baton of N Dutta.
