Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye tanhaayi haay re haay re

Posted on: February 21, 2012

Nutan (DOB-4 june 1936 – DOD-21 february 1991) left for heavenly abode this day 20 years ago. Twenty years ago ! How time flies !

She belonged to one of the first Hindi movie dynasties. Her mother(Shobhana Samarth) was a noted actress in Hindi movies, as was her sister (Tanuja). With Tanuja’s marriage to Shomu Mukherji, this family married into another big Hindi movie dynasty that included Joy Mukherji, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar etc. Later on, her son, Mohnish Bahal and her neice Kajol would also act in Hindi movies , with Kajol marrying Ajay Devgan, another well known actor.

Nutan won six filmfare awards, as most GK books will tell us. She was not just a leading actress of her time, but she was also a pioneer for Indian women and she ventured into a field that was then considered taboo for girls of “respectable” families. Yes, she was the first ever winner of Filmfare Miss India competition.

Unlike most actresses, she married a non movie personality namely a naval officer called Rajnish Bahl in 1959. Rajnish Bahl was the son of P C Bahl, a senior Railway Officer, who was the first Principal of Railway Staff College Vadodara in 1952. Her son, Mohnish Bahl is an actor in Hindi movies, as noted above.

On the occasion of her death anniversary, here is a song from “Tere Ghar Ke Saamne” (1962). This song is sung by Lata. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Ye tanhaayi haay re haay re (Tere Ghar Ke Saamne)(1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

aa aa aa
aaa aaa aaa
ho oo oo

yeh tanhaayi haay re haay
jaane phir aaye na aaye
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey
yeh tanhaayi haay re haay
jaane phir aaye na aaye
thhaam lo baanhen
thhaam lo baanhen

jhoom jhoom gaaoon
pyaar se sharmaoon
ek nasha sa mujhe ho chala
teri meri chaah
roj badhi jaaye
aur na tootey kabhi dil tera
dekh teri meri
ab ek dagariya
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey
yeh tanhaayi haay re haay
jaane phir aaye na aaye
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey

aaj bane saathi
deep aur baati
jagmagaayi meri zindagi
paake tere saaye
kaun aage jaaye
tu mila to mili har khushi
tan man chamke
hai jaise bijariya
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey
thham lo baanhey
yeh tanhaayi haay re haay
jaane phir aaye na aaye
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey

aaj samay aaya
maine tujhe paaya
main lata hoon tere pyaar ki
phool naye laaoon
tujhko mehkaaoon
main kali hoon tere haar ki
pyaar ki hamaari
amar ho umariya
thhaam lo baanhey
thhaam lo baanhey
yeh tanhaayi haay re haay
jaane phir aaye na aaye
thhaam lo baanhey
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
thhaam lo baanhey

Nutan is one of my favourite actresses – and I forgot that today was her death anniversary! I felt that there was something significant about the 21st of Feb but I could just not remember what it was.

Anyway, thanks to you, Atul, for remembering the occasion and paying tribute to Nutan. I will admit that I did not quite like her “mera pati mera devta roles” too much but I loved her in Sujata, Seema, Bandini and Milan. And lighter movies like Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Paying Guest and Dil Hi to Hai.

Khyati ji,

Wonderful memories. As Raja ji has said, this film is one of my favorites just for Nutan’s performance especially in the songs, be it “Pyaar Ka Raag Suno”, “Dekho Rootthaa Na Karo”, “Ek Ghar Bana’ungaa”, and of course this one.

Part of this film is shot in Simla, and for me it was a co-incidence that I saw this film in Simla, on one of my family vacation trips (a rerun). As always, the songs have kept with me, always.

The tune of this song is based on a non-filmy Bengali folk song sung by S D Burman, probably in late 40s. Here is the audio clip :
