Mere lalla ko sulaayegi nindiya

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
I was aware of the film Suhagan (1964) but never knew that one more film by the same name was released in 1954. In fact, I found that most of the websites including IMD jumbled the details of both these films in Suhagan (1954). As per Indian Film Trade website, the film was produced by Datta Dharmadhikari, a Marathi film veteran who has been known for producing and directing family drama films. Anant Mane, also a veteran Marathi film director, directed the film. The star cast included Geeta Bali and Jaswant in the lead role and Shyam Kumar, Sulochana, Vijaylaxmi, Janakidas in subsidiary roles.
One song from this film which has recently caught my attention is ‘ mere lalla ko sulaayegi nindiyaa’ sung by Talat Mehmood. The lullaby song was written by Ehsan Rizvi and the music direction is accredited to Vasant-Ramchandra. One of the comments on YT indicates that Vasant Deasi was the music director of this film but due to some reason, he could not complete the film and C Ramchandra completed the music. Another comment on one more clip of the song says that Vasant Pawar- Ramchandra Wadhavkar duo were the music director of this film. I request the knowledgeable readers to throw some light on the correct position. By the way, Vasant Pawar had been the music director of at least 5-6 Marathi films directed by Anant Mane.
The first four lines of the song would give an impression that this is a separation song. But it is indeed a lullaby song. There is also a happy version of the lullaby sung by Asha Bhosle with the same tune but different lyrics. However, due to poor audio-video quality, I amnot able to fully decipher the lyrics.
This is the first lullaby song of Talat Mehmood that I have listened so far and also his first such Talat Mehmood song to be discussed in this blog.

ye duniyaa bataati nahin
tu kahaan ho
?? ko ab awaaz de do
jahaan ho
bhala zindagi ye koi zindagi hai
ki dil ho raha paagal sa
maalik wahaan ho
mere lalla ko sulaayegi nindiya
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
akhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
dhoondhegaa bachpan mamta ki chhaaya
dhoondhegaa bachpan mamta ki chhaaya
laaoon kahaan se jo kuchh ganwaayaa
laaoon kahaan se jo kuchh ganwaayaa
roothe huye ko manaayegi nindiyaa
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
bhagwan anokhe sapne dikhaaye
bhagwan anokhe sapne dikhaaye
phoolon mein kitne kaante chhupaaye
kaante chhupaaye
kaanton pe chal kar aayegi nindiya
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiya
aankhon mein jiske aansoo samaaye
aankhon mein jiske aansoo samaaye
jeevan bhar usko neend na aaye
jeevan bhar usko neend na aaye
aaogi tum to aayegi neendiya
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiyaa
ankhiyon mein ghulmil jaayegi nindiyaa

Arun ji, could you please shed some more light on CR and Vasant Desai duo? Like how they got along since each one was a giant in his own right, whether they worked on same tune etc., are there any references in CR’s autobiography?
Warm Regards,
Umesh
PS: Where/How can I get copy of the book? A photocopy would also be a treasure 🙂

Kamath ji,
The Music Directors of this film are Vasat Desai and C.Ramchandra.They have given music together to another Alhad Chitra film Savdhan-54 also.In both films they gave music together as Vasant Ramchandra.
Dada Dharmadhikari was not just a Marathi Director, but he,thru his Alhad chitra, produced not less than 13 films in Hindi, and most films were directed by him too.He has directed films of other producers as well.
Similarly Anant Mane had also directed 8 Hindi films in his career.
SUHAGAN-1954 was based on a famous Marathi film Suvasini-53.
The film emphasises that the grass is always greener outside the window, but when one goes closure to it,he can see that it is only an illusion.A Suhagan’s happiness is in her home and not in money,is the message given here.
Radha,a young unmarried girl paints rosy pictures of a married life.when she gets married to Shyam,on the suggestion of her saheli Jamuna and her husband Govind, she finds that Shyam is a very good person,he loves her also, but he earns so less that Radha’s dreams are not fulfilled.Slowly, she starts fighting with Shyam and one day, after a big fight, she leaves home.Their neighbours Rambha and Ramesh, who are crooks, give her support and send her to Bombay.Radha becomes a singer in Bombay. She is now happy with the money and free life. One day Shankar, sent by Rambha tries to rape her and tells her that she has to pay back the fees for all this good life. She runs away and joins a “Abla Nari Niketan” which in fact runs immoral traffic. She is also trapped and she saves her and reports the matter to Police.
Police rescue her.She now realises that there is nomplace like a Home and real happiness is in Husband’s love, for a Suhagan. She accidentally meets her friend Jamuna and Govind in Bombay and they convince her to return home, where Shyam is still awaiting her with open arms.
Radha comes back home.By now,Shyam also has become well to do in money, but Radha now only wants his love as a SUHAGAN and not money.

Thanks for the clarification about Vasant-Ramchandra.
With the synopsis of the film story, I can now appreciate this lori song much more than when I wrote this article.
