Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun

Posted on: February 29, 2012

This article is written by Ava Suri, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.

When I was 20 I moved to Delhi and stayed with my aunt’s family in Delhi. She had a large family of 6 children. Four of her older children were married and had moved out of the house. Her youngest two, a boy and a girl, became my beloved companions. Love of art and sports ran in the family. My cousin worked for and played hockey for Northern Railways, in addition to that he sang beautifully. His younger sister drew and painted beautifully and worked as a commercial artist.

Their taste in music was faultless, and they introduced me to the joys of listening to Begam Akhtar, Jagmohan, Surinder Kaur, Asa Singh Mastana and many of such golden voices. Old Hindi music I already knew and loved, but they broadened my knowledge. Along with them I listened to classical renderings of Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi and Shivprasad Chaurasia, to name a few.

I also began to know and love gair-filmi geet sung by Mohammad Rafi and many other artists. It was like another world full of artist who sang bhajans, geet, ghazals that were every bit as beautiful as (sometimes more beautiful than) the more popular hindi film music. Surely everyone has heard the beautiful Meera bhajans set to music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar and sung by Lata.

One of our favorites was Jagmohan Sursagar. We had a cassette, a collection of his songs, called ‘The best of Jagmohan’ that I played over and over again till I knew all the songs by heart. “Dil ko hai tumse pyar kyun” was the first song in this collection, hence this is the one I have chosen to present here first. I have no idea who wrote the lyrics of this song, or who set it to music. I have tried looking around on the internet but did not get much help. No biographical data about Jagmohan was available, all I got was this entry on a blog . Maybe a kind reader will provide us with some valuable information about this wonderful singer in the comment box. My guess is it was recorded sometime in the ‘40s.

Song-Dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun (Jagmohan NFS)(1945) Singer-Jagmohan Sursagar, Lyrics-Faiyaz Hashmi, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics

Dil ko hai tum se
ae ae ae ae
dil ko tumse pyaar kyun
un un
yeh na bata sakoonga main
yeh na bata sakoonga main
dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun
pyaar kyun

pehle milan ki chaaon mein,
tumse tumhaare gaaon mein
aankhen huyi thhin chaar kyun
yeh na bata sakoonga main
pehle Milan ki chaaon mein,
tumse tumhaare gaaon mein
aankhen hui thhin char kyun
yeh na bata sakoonga main
yeh na bata sakoonga main
dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun
pyaar kyun

tumko nazar mein rakh liya
dil mein jigar mein rakh liya
tumko nazar mein rakh liya
dil mein jigar mein rakh liya
khud main hua shikaar kyun
yeh na bata sakoonga main

roop ki kuchh kami nahin
duniya mein ek tumhi nahin
roop ki kuch kami nahin
duniya me ik tumhi nahin
par main tumhaari yaad mein
rehta hoon bekaraar kyun
yeh na bata sakoonga main
par main tumhaari yaad mein
rehta hoon bekarar kyun
Yeh na bata sakoonga main
Yeh na bata sakoonga main
dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun
pyaar kyun

Thanks Ava for posting this melody of Jagmohanji. We are/were sailing in the same boat. My brother is a huge fan of Jagmohan too. So, during my “kiddy days”, I was forced to listen to Jagmohanji’s songs on radio. After engagement, I “discovered” that my husband is also a huge fan of this artist. So, after many years of listenting to his songs, I also developed the same test. Thanks again.

Ava Suri ji,
You have made my day ! Thanks for posting this song.
I am a great fan and Bhakt of Jagmohan’s songs.
When Sudhir ji had started Saigal and later P.Mullick’s songs posting,I had requested him also to consider posting songs of Jagmohan.
Here is some info about him.
JAGMOHAN SURSAGAR or JAGANMOY MITRA was born on 6-9-1918 in Bengal.he had a regular trg. in classical music and his first disc “Sawan Rate Jadi” came out in 1939.
He has sung over 400 songs in Bengali and Hindi.Hindi songs are about 100 in number. The number does not matter, but the sweetness in his voice used to mesmerise the listeners.
He sttled in Bombay in 1950.
He gave music to some Hindi films too.
His Auto-biography titled “Sawan Rate Jadi” (same as his first song) was published in 1970.
He sang hundreds of songs of Ravindra Sangeet and Nazrul geets.
he was the contemporary of hemant Kr. and Dhananjoy Bhattacharya-the 2 singers in Bengali and Hindi languages.
he toured several countries for stage shows and made his songs popular in US,UK and East African Countries.
He died on 9-5-2006,due to Brain Haemorrhage at the age of 85 years, leaving behind him 3 sons and 2 daughters.
I have a collection of his Hindi songs which I secured from Calcutta in the late 70s.
The songs of Jagmohan I like more are-
mujh ko hai tumse pyar kyun
Sapnon me mujh ko
ye chand nahin
Pyari tum kitni Dil deke dard liya
Mujhe na sapnon me
meri aankhen bani diwani
us raag ko payal mein
Ek baar muskura do …..etc. The list is very long.
Ava ji,

Really you have made me happy today.
Thank you,once again.

Thanks for the details about the lyricist and music director. Any idea when this song was released ?

Presently, I am travelling. I could give the information about the lyricist and MD because I could get that from my Picasa album in which I have uploaded pictures of labels and mast of some of the gramophone records. The smaller prints on this record are hazy and I am not able to see the year in which the record was released. The record No. is N.16685 from which I guess, it may be possible to get the year of the release of this record.

Please read the lyricist name as Faiaz Hashmi as printed on the record label. Sorry for spelling mistake.

Why Nanda’s photo? Jagmohan’s photo is available on the Net. Please change it. Gives wrong signals.
Jagmohan used to stay in Juhu, where my Doctor uncle use to visit quite often.
Jagmohan & Saigal went to Omkarnath Thakur for classical training. They were given ‘Babul Mora’ for rehearsing. Saigal could grasp it much faster and left earlier. They were not knowing each other. Upon asking he was told that he was Saigal, the famous singer.
I am great fan of NFS. In fact its a different world altogether where there is no interference from the producer, director, distributor, actors etc. Where the singer has a field day; where he can experiment, innovate, get creative, think out of the box without external encumbrances.
Have you heard our famous playback singers singing NFS; be it Lata, Asha(she is great: Kabhi Neki bhi uske seene me ..), Suman, Usha, then Rafi, Talat, Mukesh, Not Kishore(never heard NFS from him; correct me..) Manna Dey(Yeh awara badal), Hemant(Bhala tha kitna apna bachpan) etc.. I can sing most of them; you will just forget our oldies goldies film songs.
In fact Mr Atul should work on NFS exclusively (you have done enough for the Hindi film songs) Start combing the net with fine tooth for the audio and the lyrics. Work will be faster as no videos are there.
Then the above singers have sung beautifully Gujarati songs, without giving an impression that they are not Gujaratis… Thats another story.. Another project for Shri Atul.

Wow, what a fantastic song! Never heard it before – to be honest, I’ve never heard any of Jagmohan Sursagar’s songs. What a superb voice he had!

Looking forward to more of his songs here.

Thanks, Ava! This is a gem of a song.

Arunkumarji, I will surely post the songs that you have mentioned, they are all my favorites too.

Nitinji, I liked the sound on this video better, hence I chose it. I will try the one with Jagmohan’s face on it next time.

Nitinji- I was racking my brains and trying to remember if I have heard Kishore Kumar sing any non-film song, but could not think of any. I have heard Talat, Hemant, Lata, Asha, Rafi, Bhupinder and many others sing them, and great songs they are too.

I can recall of at least one NFS sung by Kishore Kumar. It was “dheere se jaana khatiyan mein o khatmal” which was a parody of his mentor S D Burman’s song “Dheere se jaana bagiyan mein o bhanwra”

Is this Kishore song an NFS? I love this song for its meaning. There are many versions out there of course.

I am not sure about the voice as doesn’t sound like him. But I haven’t heard KK’s any Bengali song. There is a Gujarati translation of this song also which I studied during my 8th grade. According to my knowledge, this poem/song was written when Gandhiji was leaving for Round Table conference. Was it by Rabindranath Tagore? The song means, even if nobody accompanies you in this journey, you just go/proceed all alone by yourself. All this info may not be all correct. Someone may put some light on this song/meaning.

It is clearly Kishore Kumar’s voice.

Oh Arunbhai,
Kaise aap ka sukriya ada karu. As I said, I learned this in Gujarati, but according to my opinion, when you translate, (bhashatar karte ho to dono bhasha ka antar to rahe jata hai. Bengali is such a sweet language. Whenever I visit our Ramakrishna/Vivekananda Monastery, so many Bengalis sing their prayer/bhajans in Bengali. The room is lighted with only few candles, fragrance of few incense sticks, people are singing Bengali bhajans on harmonium – it’s so peaceful & serene.
Thanks again.
