“Majhli Didi” (1967) is a movie which was based on a novel by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay. The movie was produced by K G Pictures. Kochi Sarkaar and Gopal Mukherji were the producers and the movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. Nabebdu Ghosh wrote the screenplay.
Starcast of the movie included names like Meena kumari, Dharmendra, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawaar, Master Sachin, Leela Chitins, Leela Mishra, Amal Sen, Abubakar, Parashuram, Ajit Chatterjee, Keshto Mukherjee, Samar Roy, Nimbalkar, Baby Saarika, Jalal Agha, Asit Sen, Shah, Satya Bannerjee, Aaythodha, Master Maruti, Master Khalid, Daya Bai, Niranjan Roy, Muniraaj, Baby Razia etc.
The movie did not do well at the box office, as often happens with movies based on classic novels.
I have not watched the movie, but going by the picturisation of the songs, it was a well made movie. The songs were certainly nice to listen to and watch, even though the songs did not became chartbusters.
Here is a song from the movie. This song is in fact the movie opening song. The movie opens with a boat flowing serenely in a river and this song getting played. A movie opening with a soothing boat song over river Hoogly, while credits roll on screen- it cannot get any better than that for a music lover.
This song is sung by the saintly voice of Hemant Kumar. Neeraj is the lyricist. Hemant Kumar also composed the music.
Here is this wonderful song from “Majhli Didi” (1967). Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

The movie was a bit weepy, but I liked the ‘village’ kind of atmosphere here.
