‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen’ (1962) was produced by D G Laad and was directed by S N Tripathi. The cast included Bharat Bhushan and Anita Guha in the lead roles supported by Sabita Chatterjee, Kumar, David, D K Sapru, Mukri, Preeti Bala, Prem Sagar, S N Tripathi, Parshuram, Dulari, Radheshyam etc.
It may be recalled that about two decades back before the release of the film under discussion, Ranjit Movietone had produced ‘Tansen’ (1943) based on the legend of Tansen who was one of the navratnas in the court of Akbar, with K L Saigal in the title role and Khursheed Bano, his love interest. In the film under discussion, these roles have been performed by Bharat Bhushan and Anita Guha. There are fictional stories and legends associated with Tansen. Both the films’ stories are based on facts mixed with fiction specially Tansen’s commitments to his sweet-hearts – in the 1943 film, Tani, the shepherd’s daughter and Hansa, his childhood sweet-heart from his village in the 1962 film. In both films, Tansen is caught between his devotion to music and devotion to his sweethearts who are also his muse.
The story of the film is as under:
In a stormy night, Tanu, a dumb boy has taken the shelter in a Shiva temple with his goat. After milking his goat, he pours the milk on the Shivling. Miraculously, Tanu gets his voice back and he sings a devotional song in praise of Lord Shiva. Villagers are pleasantly surprised that Tanu has not only got his voice back but he also has a good voice for singing.
One day, Swami Haridas (Kumar) of Brindavan on his way to pilgrimage hears the voice of Tanu. He meets his father and tells him that one day Tanu will become a great singer. All he needs is training under him. Since he is on a pilgrimage and it would take four years for him to return to Brindavan, he suggests Tanu’s father to take him to Mohammed Ghaus (David) in Gwalior who will train him in music. After his return, Swami Haridas will make him his disciple. Tanu is taken to Mohammed Ghaus by his father in Gwalior and he joins his music school. After sometime, his childhood sweet-heart, Hansa also joins him in the music school.
Years later, Tanu has grown up. Mohammed Ghaus directs him to join Swami Haridas as it is Swami who would teach him Dhrupad. He is reluctant to leave as otherwise he would miss his childhood friend, Hansa. However, he has no option and he shifts to Brindavan to become the disciple of Swami Haridas who has returned after completing his pilgrimage. Years later, Tanu (Bharat Bhushan) has grown up and Hansa ( Anita Guha) is waiting for him to meet him after years. Tanu meets her and promises that soon they will get married as his musical training is over.
Tanu’s musical training is over and he is ready to get married to Hansa. He asks the permission for the marriage from his Guru, Mohammed Ghaus, who reveals him that he has received an invitation from Raja Ramchandra (D K Sapru) of Rewa to be the court singer. The King receives Tanu in his court and announces that he would be known as Sangeet Shiromani Tansen. After few months, Raja Ramchandra gets summons from Shahenshah Akbar (S N Tripathi) to release Tansen to be one of the navratnas in his court. Raja Ramchandra defies Akbar’s summons and directs Tansen to go back to Gwalior to get married to Hansa. However, knowing fully well that not agreeing to Akbar’s summons would result in a war and the bloodshed which would affect the citizens badly. Tansen convinces Raja Ramchandra to release him to join Akbar’s court. With this decision, once again his impending marriage to Hansa gets postponed as he is now relocating himself to Delhi.
With the separation from Hansa, Tansen gets such a shock that he loses his voice. This news goes to Mohammed Ghaus. Hansa decides to go to Delhi. After hearing Hansa singing, Tansen joins her in singing thus proving that his voice is restored. Akbar is extremely happy and asks Hansa for any reward she wants. However, soon he learns that Tansen was to get married to Hansa when he summoned Tansen to Delhi. Akbar is happy to host Tansen’s marriage with Hansa in Delhi.
During her stay in Delhi, a misunderstanding between her and Tansen develops. Naaz Parveen (Sabita Chatterjee), the dancer in the court of Orchha king has come to Delhi for Tansen’s help for waiver of penalty on the King of Orchha from Akbar. However, Hansa thinks that Tansen has developed intimacy with Naaz Parveen. Also, when she says that Mohammed Ghaus is seriously ill and he wants both of them to see before he dies, Tansen appears unconcerned. Hansa leaves Tansen in disgust and stays in Brindavan in the ashram of Swami Haridas as Mohammed Ghaus is no more.
Tansen is once again depressed as he is not aware of the whereabouts of Hansa. In Delhi, Princess (Priti Bala) is taken ill and the court physicians are unable to diagnose her illness. A hakim is called to check princess who suggests to get a singer who could sing Raag Deepak to cure the princess. But the life of the singer of the Raag Deepak will be at risk. Tansen, who is already depressed, volunteers to sing Raag Deepak as he tells Akbar that without Hansa, his life is of no use. Tansen starts preparing to sing Raag Deepak.
Dancer, Naaz Parveen rushes to Brindavan and after clearing the misunderstanding about Tansen, she tells Hansa about the risk Tansen is taking in singing Raag Deepak to cure Princess. Hansa and Naaz Parveen both rush to Delhi where they find Tansen is unconscious after the completion of his singing in Raag Deepak and Princess getting cured from her illness. Hakim suggests to find a singer urgently who could sing Raag Megh Malhar to bring rains to cool Tansen’s body. Even though Hansa did not have expertise in singing Raag Megh Malhar, she starts singing invoking her Guru Mohammed Ghaus. Both Hansa and Naaz Parveen dance while they sing the song in Raag Megh Malhar. Soon rain showers start cooling Tansen’s body who regains consciousness. Tansen and Hansa are united.
The film had as many as 16 songs (including one double version song) written by Shailendra (12), Swami Haridas (2) and Tansen (2) which were set to music by S N Tripathi. HFGK has, however, listed 14 songs. 12 songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 13th song, ‘mehaa aao re ghir ghir ke chhaao re’, rendered by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. The song is written by Shailendra and is picturised on Anita Guha and Sabita Chatterjee. Other actors seen during the picturisation is S N Tripathi in the role of Akbar, Priti Bala in the role of Akbar’s daughter, Kumar in the role of Swami Haridas among others. This is the only song which is picturised in colour in this film.
It appears that Gramophone records of this song were not issued. This song is not included in the Long-Playing gramophone records of the songs from the film. SAREGAMA has also not released this song in Mp3 format.
The context of the song is that after singing a song in Raag Deepak, Tansen has fainted because of the unbearable burning sensation on his body. On realising that Tansen is in great pain, Hansa (Anita Guha) and Naaz Parveen (Sabita Chatterjee) sing the song under discussion in Raag Megh Malhar to bring the rain-bearing clouds. The resultant rain showers cool down Tansen’s body and he regains consciousness. And this occasion unites Tansen with Hansa.
