“Gharaana” (1961) was a Gemini Production movie. It was directed by S S Vasan. The movie had a starcast consisting of Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh, Raaj Kumar, Shobha Khote, Agha, Minu Mumtaz, Lalita Pawar, Kanhaiya Lal etc.
If Rajendra Kumar was in it and the movie wasa hit, then it follows that the movie had outstanding music in it ! Yes, that was indeed the case. This movie earned Filmfare’s best music award for Ravi.
It is unbelievable but true that this movie is now over half a century old. Its songs still sound so fresh and so evergreen.
AS many as five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. It is a duet which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. The song is picturised nicely too. Shubha Khote sings this song addressing her sweet nothings to a picture of Agha. And she hears Agha singing back to her. She wonders how Agha can sing back to her from the picture. Then Agha appears in person from behind the photoframe.
As the song progresses, Rajendra Kumar and Asha Parekh watch the performance from the first floor of the palatial haweli. The singing is accompanied by dancing, with Agha performing videshi dance and Shubha Khote the desi Bharatnatyam. The two kids of the households also appear and they too begin to dance the “twist”. In fact, Lalitha Pawar, the matriarch of the family , dressed traditionally in Kanjeeewaran Sari, too does a jig or two, from the privacy of her room ofcourse.
This lovely and extremely hummable song is written by Shakeel Badayuni.

Atul, this song is not showing in the ‘Gharana(1961)’ listing in the “list-of-songs-by-movies” section.
