“Sargam” (1950) was a Filmistan production. It was directed by P L Santoshi and the starcast included names like Raj Kapoor, Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. L. Puri, Sudesh etc.
The movie is a treasure house of awesome songs which are different from the usual songs in Hindi movies. I have discussed as many as six songs from this movie and these songs are fantastic to listen to.
Here is another wonderful song from this movie. This song is a dance song. It is sung by C Ramchandra, Lata and chorus. This is a special song in the sense that here the chorus doers the bulk of singing rather than play the second fiddle to the main singers.
The song begins slowly when the lady expresses her loneliness, and then her loneliness and replaced with joy and the songs gets lively as Raj Kapoor, her beloved makes his appearance.
P L Santoshi is the lyricist and music is composed by C Ramchandra.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt and she has done a great job dealing with so many ” wai” and so many combinations of singers in this song.
Here is this fantastic song from “Sargam” (1950) which I heard for the first time only just now.
This song also happens to be the 1700th song of Lata in this blog. Apparently Lata songs get added in this blog even when we are asleep. 🙂

Atul ji,
This is a fantastic song.In fact almost all the songs of Sargam are pearls.This film was made when C.Ramchandra was in his full blast and gave superb music in this period.Lata also sang for him with her ‘heart’ in this period only.
SARGAM-1950,was a C.Ramchandra film as much as it was Santoshi’s film too.A Filmistan film,it was produced,directed,written by P.L.Santoshi.He also wrote the story,s/play,dialogues and Lyrics also.
In s/play writing he was assisted by Subodh Mukherjee,who later became the director of as many as 12 hit films like,Paying Guest,Munimji,Love Marriage,Junglee,April Fool etc.
Santoshi’s stories used to have lot of characters and even in this film also there are many characters.
Seth Roopchand was the owner of the biggest Theatre in the town.He was hosting a welcome programme for the return of his Main singer Kumar from foreign tour.Pt.Gyan shankar’s singer children refuse to participate in the programme claiming that Kumar’s music is crude.Gyan shanker had 7 children named on 7 Raagaas,like Asavari,Bhairavi,Bageshri etc.Before dying,he had mortgaged his house to Sethji,which the Sethji wants to auction.The children try to get a match for Asavari for marriage.Same time,Vinod,son of Sethji comes to their house by mistake.he just returned from England.He is mistaken as the prospective groom,but matters are cleared but not before Vinod falls in mutual lobe with Bhairavi.To save their house,he steals and gives them 10000 rupees.The theft is found and children have to leave the town.They all board a train,in which Vinod and Munne-who lobes Bageshri-another sister also travel.
They all alight in a town where kumar’s concert is held.Finally the Sargam children join Kumar,who returns their house.kumar now loves Bhairavi.He plans a foreign tour to Africa.Kumar,Roopchand,the children,Munne,Ruhani-a girl selected for Vinod by Roopchand travel on a ship.Vinod also travels disguised as a sailor.
The ship wrecks in a storm all the party members land on an island,where they are caught by local tribe and tied up.The Chief of Tribe wants to marry Bhairavi.
Vinod,Munne and the sargam sisters plan and escape from the tribe’s area together.Kumar gets tied up with Ruhani and they leave for Africa,whereas all others return to India.
Seth Roopchand accepts Bhairavi for Vinod.Munne also gets Bageshri.
The story was written in such a way that there was plenty of scope for Music,dance and songs.The music was devine and is even today very popular.

Thanks for posting this gem. Like you I also heard it for the first time while searching for Sargam’s songs. What I noticed was that it has more chorus part than the actual lead singers’.

Thanks for the synopsis. C.Ramchandra and Lataji has created so many classical/light classical songs. “Sargam”, being one of them. I love another song from this film too, Tinak tin tani do din ki zindagani….
