Jab tak duniya rahi rahegi

Posted on: March 26, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I have not seen the film YE DIL KISKO DOON (1963) but I have watched all the available video clips of the songs umpteen times . I enjoyed these songs some of which are audio-visual treats. The film was produced under the banner of Bindu Kala Mandir and directed by Kanak Mishra who was also the story and screen play writer. Star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Ragini, Agha,Jayshree Gadkar, Jeevan, Sajjan, Asit Sen etc. All songs of the film were written by Qamar Jalalabadi and set to music by Iqbal Qureshi. The film’s name may have been inspired by a Helen song ‘itni badi mehefil aur ek dil kisko doon’ from the film ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi” (1960), but could not inspire thea udience to come to the theatres and watch the film. The film failed at the box office and with this, Shashi Kapoor’s struggling days to establish him as a lead actor were prolonged. It was about 2 years later that he could established himself as a lead actor with the box office success of the film ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965). For Iqbal Qureshi, the film’s music director, once again the luck was not in his favour. His efforts in churning out great songs were wasted in a film that has now been almost forgotten.

On the basis of the video clips, Shashi Kapoor-Ragini combination did not look to me as a great lead pair which would attract audience. Ragini was known more as an actor with side roles and as an elegant dancer. In those days, Shashi Kapoor had tough competition from lead actors like Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt besides his own brother Shammi Kapoor. The synopsis on the Indian Film trade website indicates that the film was based around the story of a young man with a wealthy background who leaves the house in the disguise of an ordinary person in search of true love. The theme of the story seems to be similar to that of the film ’Maaya’ (1961) except that the hero was in the search of true friends and for that he lived with people of the lower strata of the society.

The film not only had melodious songs but some of them were also nicely conceptualised for picturisations. Two songs of the film that come to my mind in this connection is ‘phir aaney lagaa yaad wohi’ and ‘jab tak duniya rahi rahegaa’. The first one has already been discussed in this blog with other two songs of this film. The second song being discussed now is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi. The song appears to be a dream sequence in which Ragini imagines that she is dancing with her love interest Shashi Kapoor. The song is not only the breezy one, it has been picturised with good lighting effects focussing only on the actors performing the dance, the musical instruments and musical notes during the initial picturisation.

I am not a keen watcher of Shashi Kapoor films though I do like watching songs picturised on him. And this song is no exception. In my view, this song is one of the examples where the picturisation looks very effective even in a black and white movie. I have a feeling that Shashi Kapoor would not have looked so handsome if the song was picturised in colour. Full marks to Cinematographer Aloke DasGupta for the lighting effects and for handsomely capturing Shashi Kapoor.

Enjoy this ‘light and sound’ show.

pyaar bhari raat hai
aarzooyen jhoomti
aa aa aa
aarzooyen jhoomti hain
pyaar bhari raat hai
roz mile phir bhi lage
pehli mulaakaat hai

ishq ke lab pe aa ke rahegaa
tera naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam
jab tak duniyaa rahi rahegaa
teraa naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam
teraa naam meraa naam

As you say Sadanandji, beautifully picturised, and so beautifully sung. I saw the name Iqbal Qureshi and knew the song would be good. Ragini’s dance is good, and she makes Shashi dance too!

Kamath ji,
Your write up for the song is indeed very good, indepth and informative.
However,Ragini was much more than a dancer or ‘an actress known tobe in side roles’.
Ragini was the youngest of the famous ‘Travancore Sisters’,of Laltha,Padmini and Ragini. She was also an accomplished dancer.
She entered Hindi films in the early 50s and played Heroine to actors like,Ashok Kumar,Shammi Kapoor,Shashi Kapoor,Ajit,Shekhar,Kamal Kapoor,Suresh,Mahipal,Dev Anand,Trilok Kapoor etc.
She did roles in almost 40 Hindi films.Being a dancer, the producers used to put dancing sequences even when she was a Heroine. In some films, like Sarhad, she played a parallel Heroine too. I am not counting the Dubbed films from South, where she was Heroine to greats like,NTR,MGR and Sivaji Ganeshan besides others.
She died a premature death in 1976,due to Cancer,at the age of only 39 !

I have used the words ‘side roles’ for ‘supporting roles’ or ‘Non-lead roles’ and were NOT meant to be for insignificant roles.

The context was with reference to the responses from the audience for this film which was released in 1963. By that time she was already in non-lead roles in some films. For example :
PAYAL (1957) – Lead actor : Padmini
QAIDI (1957) – Lead actor : Padmini
MR X (1957) – Lead actor : Nalini Jaywant
AMAR DEEP ( 1958) : Lead actor : Vyjayantimala
KALPANA (1960) – Lead actor : Padmini
GHERAA DAAG (1963) – Lead actor : Mala Sinha

I guess, I could have been more explicit while writing that part of the paragraph.

Ragini was a well known actress in Malayalam movies. She shone in every movie in Kerala. The reasons are not far to seek. Kerala always made movies where the heroine was not always a giddy headed romantic soul. We’ve had movies in the 60s where the heroine played the role of a prostitute, thief, a wayward woman etc. There was even a movie where Sheela, the heroine did the role of a person afflicted with leprosy! Wonder if the Asha Parekhs, the Saira Banus and the Sadhanas would touch these roles with a ten feet batge pole!

In 78 RPM Record version of the song, there is an additional (4th) stanza which is not in the sound track version:

Lyrics of the 4th stanza of the song:

maango khuda se hamko kar lo duaayen
maango khuda se ae ae
haa aa aa
aa aa aaa
maango khuda se hamko kar lo duaayen
tum ho kareeb phir kyun usko bulaayen
ab to khuda ko yaad rahega
tera naam mera naam
tera naam mera naam
jab tak duniya rahi rahega
tera naam mera naam
tera naam mera naam
tera naam mera naam
tera naam mera naam
