Thhaade rahiyo o baanke yaar

Posted on: March 31, 2012

When one looks at the calender of Hindi movie music, one finds that almost every day of the year is important in one respect or the other. Today (31st march) for instance is the day when Meena Kumari expired exactly 40 years ago. I was a school kid at that time and we school kids, on hearing this news opined that “Paakeeza”, the much awaited movie of Meena Kumari would benefit from her death. And the judgement of us pre teen kids turned out to be accurate. 🙂 What Prophetic kids we were those days! 🙂

The songs of this movie played a very important role in the success of the movie. Personally I did not like the songs because those days I disliked “old” songs and the music of this song sounded right out of the musical scores from a 1950s movie, what with Ghulam Mohammad being the music director of the movie.

Most music lovers were more tolerant than me, and it meant that the songs of this movie were nearly as popular as the music of R D Burman, the then reigning music director of Hindi movies. R D Burman’s “Dum Maaro Dum” was the most popular song of the yaer in Binaca geetmala then the second most popular song of the year was from “Paakeeza”. Not bad at all !

On the occasion of Meena Kumari’s 40th death anniversary, here is a song from “Paakeezah” (1971), a movie which was released a few days after Meena Kumari’s death. This song is sung by Lata nd it is picturised on Meena Kumari as a mujra song.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Oh, yes, how could I forget? 31st March 1972, the date that Meena Kumari passed away. 40 years already! Wow, time flies!

I was travelling by train when I heard the news. We were travelling to Bombay at that time by either the Howrah Mail or Express. We bought the morning newspaper at the railway station and saw this news. Meena Kumari was a legend at that time – and though she had been in very bad shape – it was still a shock. It was not very long after Jaikishen died – I remember he was still the big death being talked about.

I may not talk too much about Meena Kumari but I really liked her a lot. Very beautiful – with THAT voice!!!

Very good that you remembered and posted this here, Atul. Thanks.

I was in Bangalore then, and the news did not intrigue me much. I remember looking at large posters of Pakeezah strewed about town without any wish to see the movie.

It was some years later, 1975, that I found myself in Sundernagar, a pretty little town in HP with my parents. Pakeezah was playing in the only cinema hall in the town, and my mum was keen to see it. i was thunderstruck by it. It is a beautiful, poetic, operatic (in a positive sense) movie. I would count ‘Inhi logon ne’ as the best mujra ever. The lyrics, the ambiance (its beautiful how you get a panormic view of several kothas in full swing) Meena’s beauty.

But whenever I think of Pakeezah, its Meena in the Thade Rahio get up that I imagine. That beautiful dark green dress, those jewels, that singing. The music and lyrics of Pakeezah are out of the world.

Let us discuss this song afresh.
It is a well known fact that this film was a long time in making, another Mughal-e-Azam ! This song is among thesequences that were shot first as can be seen from Meena Kumari’s looks. Another point to note is the “tahzeeb” of the Muzra. Meena Kumari is properly decked, bejwelled, and she conducts herself so properly. when people are giving her bags of coins she does not react. A zamindar feels offended by the way one fellow shows her the bag and leaves. What a wonderful scene. I have not seen such a fine display of tahzeeb in a kotha! Then let us come to the lyrics and picturisation. The Lyrics says, WAIT — Thade Rahiyuo — but there is motion every where, in her dance steps, in the camera movements…. and surely in the music. See her expressions! So relaxed, but so teasing. This is among the best muzra songs ever picturized!
Colours are so beautifully matched, her dress, her gold jewellery all has so finely been shot. Considering the time this was shot, early 1960s, it was a wonderful effort by the cinematographer. Notice the acting of Nadira, Kamal Kapoor and others — so suttle, till the gun goes off!
I am sure many of your well knowlegdeable contributors would add to this aspect of the song.

thank you very much for including one of my favourite songs. the juxtaposition of the opening lines in chaste hindustani and the rest of the song in brajbhasha, the sudden, unexpected pause after bole… and jingle of ankle bells replacing the unspoken words of the unfinished sentence – everything leaves me speechless with awe whenever I listen. the hauntingly melodious songcharged with deep emotion is a rare jewel. but I am sorry for the transcription of lyrics – the word ‘lagaiyaa’ has been repeatedly used – it should be ‘lagaai aaun’ – these errors are really painful for music lovers. otherwise you are doing a great job. thanks again
