This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Greetings all for the celebration of Ram Navami today, the anniversary of the birth of Lord Ram. Ram is one of the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver and the Sustainer of this universe. Today’s celebration is one of the most ancient festivals celebrated in India. The date of Ram Navami can be traced back to the pre-Christian era. References to this celebration can be found in many of our scriptures. In Hindu religion, it is considered to one of the five major sacred festivals and it is said that, properly observing this fast leads to the attainment of salvation.

Today is the ninth day of the shukla paksha, the bright phase of moon of the lunar month of Chaitra. It is also the last day of Navratri, the nine days festival celebrating the Mother Goddess. Being one of the premier incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the celebration today is one of the most important festivals for the people of this country.

This song celebrates the birth of Ram, in the palace of King Dashrath of Ayodhya. It is from the 1951 film ‘Raam Janma’. The film is produced under the banner of Mohan Pictures, Bombay, by Ramneeklal N Shah and is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The star cast of this film includes Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Shobhna Samarth, Veera, Jankidas, Mona, Parvati, Ghanshyam, Bhupendra Kapoor, Bhujbal Singh, Mishra, Anand Tewari, Chandrashekhar, Urvashi, Ram Singh, besides others. The songs of this film are written by four poets, namely Neelkantth Tewari, Saraswati Kumar ‘Deepak’, BP Bhargava, and Ramesh Gupta. This song is penned by Saraswati Kumar ‘Deepak’. The music composition is by Avinash Vyas.

The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle, accompanied by a chorus. Given the year of this film, this is one of the earliest songs rendered by Asha ji. And a very rare song indeed.

Wishing joy and happiness to all, on this wonderful occasion, and premier festival of India.

Song- Huaa Ram ka janm badhaayi tribhuwan gaata (Raam Janm)(1951) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Saraswati Kumar Deepak, MD-Avinash Vyas

Sudhirji,
Don’t have a courage to doubt your knowledge, but doesn’t sound like Asha Bhonsle. Agar bhool hai to maaf karna, please.

khyati ji,
It IS Asha Bhosle.
Remember it was one of her earliest songs.
.Her voice became a little more mature and the style became more confident after few more film songs in later years.

Sudhir ji,
A very appropriate song to the occasion,as expected from you,as always !
Lord Ram or Shri Ram is one of the Avtars of Vishnu.
Here is some more info for the ininitiated and our readers from abroad.
Bhagawan Srikrishna said in Bhagwadgita-“Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati Bharatah…..” which, transalated by Hemant kumar in one of his songs is-“Jab jab hota naash dharam ka,aur Paap badh jaata hai,tab lete avatar Prabhu, yeh Vishva shaanti paata hai “.
according to garud Puran God came to the rescue of Mankind whenever it was in distress,in the form of 10 Avataars. The list is as follows-
1. Matsya Avatar (Fish)
2. Koorm ” (Tortoise)
3. Varah ” (Pig)
4.Narsinha ” (Half man+half Lion)
5. Vaman ” (A Dwarf)
6. Parshuram ” (the only Avatar with a Shastra or weapon)
7. Rama
8.krishna
9.Gautama the Budha
10. Kalki – Yet to take place.
In Bhagwat Puran,Bhavishya Puran and Narsinha Puran the following
sequence is mentioned-
8. Balram (Krishna’s Brother)
9. krishna
10. Kalki

One can easily say that the Avatars resemble the evolution of the Man as well.Starting with Fish,a sea creature, then Tortoise-creature of water and Land, then Varah-a well developed organic animal,Narsimha-Humans aquiring the skills of powerful animals for self protection etc etc.
It is stated that the first 4 Avatars took place in Satya Yuga,
next 3 in Treta Yuga
8th (Krishna) in Dwapar Yug
9th (Budha) in Kali Yug
and the 10th Kalki is yet to take place. He is supposed to come in kali Yug to defeat the Wicked, liberate the Virtueous and begin a new Satya yug.
The Ram and krishna Avatars are the most popular, also because they are in the recent past(comparatively).
our Film industry has produced films on many Avatars, except the first 3 and kalki, though references to these are in almost every avatar film produced.such films are also very popular.

Thanks so much for the additional details, very important for the folks who may not be very familiar with the Indian traditions.

I was aware of the avatars and their sequence but the “evolution” of man side of the comparison never struck me. That is SO true! Thanks for adding this dimension to my knowledge, Arunji. Always learn something from you – from every comment of yours. 🙂

And thanks for the write-up, Sudhirji. I had completely forgotten that it is Ram Navami today. Very nice to be reminded – and to listen to a song for the occasion.

I would like to have some information about Jankidass who must have done over 300 films but has rarely appeared in a second shot in the film.
