“Mangu” (1954) was a movie where Md Shafi was the original music director but O P Nayyar managed to get in at the expense of Md Shafi and composed four songs.
Md Shafi had recorded 3 songs in the movie and he had introduced Suman Kalyanpur as a playback singer. O P Nayyar worked with Asha Bhonsle for the first time in this movie and this was the beginning of a long and fruitful two decades long association. In this movie, O P Nayyar used Asha Bhonsle’s voice to create two memorable songs.
I have discussed one Asha Bhonsle song from this movie in the past. Here is another Asha Bhonsle song from the movie which is a rare gem.
This difficult to find composition showcases brilliant use of sitar (Indian instrument) and guitar (western instrument) and the result is magical.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.
Song-Bol pardesia ye toone kyaa kiya (Mangu)(1954) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
Bol pardesiya
ye toone kyaa kiyaa
apna bana ke sainyya
haay daga de diya
bol pardesiya
ye toone kyaa kiyaa
apna bana ke sainyya
haay daga de diya
bol pardesia
kisko main jaaun samjhaane
dard mera jab
tu na jaane
tu na jaane
bol pardesia
ye toone kyaa kiyaa
apna bana ke sainyya
haay daga de diya
bol pardesia
jab tohe nahin
paaooongi main
o bewafa
kit jaaungi main
jaaungi main
bol pardesia
ye toone kyaa kiyaa
apna bana ke sainyya
haay daga de diya
bol pardesia
kitna hi path ??
meri gali kab hoga aana
hoga aana
bol pardesia
ye toone kyaa kiyaa
apna bana ke zaalimya
haay daga de diya
bol pardesia

“Chham Chhama Chham was the first film of OP with Asha in his very first year as composer…1952. And OP didn’t get in, the success of Aar Paar was so enormous that Producers came banging on OP’s door telling him to take over their films from other composers.

Superb. Class. Sometimes I feel nobody can sing like her. At least some of them even Lata will not be able to justice. Of course it is true other way round.
