Iss duniyaa mein jeena hai to sun lo meri baat

This article is written by nahm, a regular contributor of lyrics to this blog and a new contributor of write ups to this blog

I have been thinking for the last few days that it is high time that I make a serious attempt to do a write up. More than 200 song lyrics (Provided) by me are already posted here. When I found this blog in January last year, it was like I found heaven on the net. I was just sorry that 3000 plus songs were already discussed and I had found it so late. By then I was almost cut off from old hindi films, since I was engrossed in life’s issues and challenges. Radio channels like vividh bharati and All India Radio (Urdu Service), once my best friends, were a thing of the past that no longer figured in my life. My deep interest in film songs occasionally brought me to Youtube to find some song or the other which came to mind.

And then there was that time when fm channels arrived. I tried to be on that train, but the constant chattering proved too much for me. Moreover, I soon got bugged after trying them all, as they all behaved as if hindi film music started with R D Burman and Kishore Kumar. As far as they knew Old Hindi film songs started with these two and ended with them.

And then it started again only with Jatin-Lalit. One song composed by this duo is a favourite of all fm channals. I would get to hear it 2-3 times everyday. Not that have anything against Jatin-Lalit, in fact their score for ‘Khaamoshi – The Musical ” is one of my few favourites in this two decades. The other day, I looked up the songs of this film, solely for the Helen song “Gaate thhe pehle akele aaj gaata hai saara jahaan”, trying to find a better alternative to this song from “Gumnaam” which I am supposed to discuss. Yeh dil sun rahaa hai, mausam ki sargam ko sun, jaana suno ham tum pe marte hain, hayya haaya
ho let it let let it go, and aaj main uper aasman neeche are all competing for the best song of the film(Khaamoshi-The Musical).

Coming to the song under discussion which is from the film “Gumnaam” a suspense thriller. I have seen this movie long back.

What happens is a bunch of people win a contest or lucky draw in a club, and are awarded a free trip to some place with all expenses paid. They all board a plane for the destination, but the plane crashes on a deserted island. The passengers all survive in true filmy style and find their way to a bhoot bunglow inhabited by funny/horrific/cook all rolled into one character played by Mehmood and his bhootiya sister, who is fond of singing the title song ” Gumnaam hai koyi badnaam hai koyi” . As the film progresses, the members of the winner team are either killed or disappearing mysteriously one by one . The members of the team are Helen, Nanda, Manoj Kumar, Madan Puri, Pran and some others. Helen is found dead right after this song in over. Manoj Kumar of course as the hero is under hiding, and finally unearths the mystery behind those killings and all is well in the end, with both hero and heroine walking into the sunset.

Lata Mangeshkar is just singing beautifully. Some people say that whatever lata can sing Asha too can sing, but all that Asha can sing Lata cannot do justice. To justify this claim Helen cabaret songs composed mainly by RD Burman are cited. But I am more of Lata and Rafi fan. True to form I maintain that Lata Mangeshkar can do justice to any type of song, except perhaps a song like the famed “damaadam mast qalandar”. I dont know if either Lata or Asha have sung “damaadam mast qalandar”, or that it has appeared in any Hindi film or not.

The other day, I was watching the song “O Haseena zulfon waali” from “Teesri Manzil”. My husband on seeing a scene or two asked about the song of Helen, “gham chhod ke manaao rangreli, aur maan lo jo kehti thhi kelly”. I said it has to be here, as it is such a famous song. When I looked in the list of songs moviewise, alas this song was conspicuously absent. My husband is not much of a film buff or even a Helen fan, but this is such a spirited song and making a fun statement with ‘never say die’ spirit. It inspired me to write an essay( I want to call it an article, but i wont). I also like such spirited songs, like “kaanton se kheench ke yeh aanchal” and some more , if I start listing them it will never end. But this song was not one of those. So here I am presenting the lyrics of this song from film “Gumnaam”, written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. The Bagpiper’s music sets the tone of the song and the clapping sounds throughout the song make it a true beach party song. It is the kind of song which reminds us of the picnics on beach and singing “in the morning, in the morning by the sea”, on the way.

I must concede that for all his surface interest(he wants to listen to music only on the road), my husband has very good taste indeed :-).

ho iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly

jeena uskaa jeena hai jo hanste gaate jee le
zulfon ki ghanghor ghataa mein nain ke saagar pee le
jeena uskaa jeena hai jo hanste gaate jee le
zulfon ki ghanghor ghataa mein nain ke saagar pee le
jo karna hai aaj hi kar lo
kal ko kis ne dekhaa
aayi hain rangeen bahaaren
le ke din rangeele
ho iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly

main albeli chingaari hoon
naachoon aur lehraaoon
daaman daaman phool khilaaun
aur khushiyaan barsaaun
main albeli chingaari hoon
naachoon aur lehraaoon
daaman daaman phool khilaaun
aur khushiyaan barsaaun
duniya waalon tum kya jaano
jeene ki yeh baaten
aao meri mehfil mein to
yeh baaten samjhaaun
ho iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly

jo bhi hogaa ham dekhenge
gham se kyun ghabraaye
iss duniyaa ke baagh mein laakhon
panchhi aayen jaayen
jo bhi hogaa ham dekhenge
gham se kyun ghabraaye
iss duniyaa ke baagh mein laakhon
panchhi aayen jaayen
aish ke bandon aish karo tum
chhodo yeh khaamoshi
log wahi jo zinda dil hain
kar baitthe jo chaahen
ho iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
iss duniya mein jeena ho to sun lo meri baat
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly
gham chhod ke manaao rangreli
aur maan lo jo kahe Kitty Kelly

The story of ‘Gumnaam’ was ‘inspired’ by Agatha Christie’s ‘And Then There Were None’. I had seen Gumnaam when it released in Bombay in 1965. I still remember being terrified by the scene where Helen gets killed. Yes! Helen really dazzled in this movie, clearly and effectively eclipsing Nanda, the heroine.

Deshmukh Sir,

Thanks a lot for your kind words. I am glad for this opportunity to air my loud musings, at last. I tried to curtail this story short. It may seem a bit abrupt to some. Good to know that you also like the songs of “Khaamoshi-The Musical”.

I have one question Sir, about “Damaadam mast qalandar”. I am not aware of any version of the song in Hindi films. If you could shed some light on this matter, i am curious to know.

Regards.

nahm ji,
As far as my knowledge goes, this song has NOT featured in any Hindi film,so far. Also no famous singer from Hindi industry has ever sung this song,
The reason was very obvious.Runa Laila had made this song so popular and famous in India, that no one wanted to be her “copy”.

Nahm Sahiba,

It is great to see you join the panel of writers.

What you wrote about FM channels is absolutely true. Listening to them makes one feel tired and irritated in a very short period of time. The certain fake enthusiasm (accompanied by a specific high pitch of delivery) they are required to exude at all times (perhaps part of the job description) is annoying beyond description. Not just that, the constant, rapid, incessant jabbering is the final straw. Apparently, they have never heard of a ‘pause’ in speech and how it can be used as an emphatic tool to capture a listener’s attention and to make more impact than a dozen uttered words. Compare this to a typical Kamal Sharma presentation of Chhaaya Geet on Vividh Bharati!

Since these channels think of themselves as catering to the 18-35 age bracket, the furthest they go with the choice of songs they play is mid-seventies, as this IS the height of golden oldies for them. Bless their ignorance!

so Nahmji
good to see you in a new awatar. now my daughter wants me to follow your foot steps. but i don’t know if i will ever come to that
but welcome to the breed of guest writers.
and yes even i agree with you as regards FM channels. even the so called old songs that they play are repeated regularly. i once tried to request a song from “Deewar” and they said they don’t have that old a song in their bank of songs!!!! imagine 1975 ‘is that old’ for them!!!!!
and i take pride that our list of old songs starts with the talkies in india.

Oh, I had SO much fun reading this write-up! You write beautifully, nahm ji. And so engagingly. Aap to badey chhupe rustam nikle. 🙂 Hoping to see many more write-ups from you.

I can totally relate to your views of fm channels behaving as if the music world started with RD Burman and Kishore Kumar. I’ve also noticed this so many times! No disrespect to these two legends, but it’s sad that the decades of golden music (and all the artistes involved) are given such shabby treatment by these channels.

And of course, your husband has got good taste. After all, he married you! 🙂

Raja ji,

Thank a lot for the praise. I had fun writing it too. It is just fortunate that i didnt have to write this in my own handwriting. It is too bad (my handwriting) and my husband would be the first to agree. He deos’nt even let me write my own cheques, if he has anything to do with it:-).

I once shocked a dear friend of mine, who was incharge of organizing essay competition in in our by asking her, “Can i bring my lap top ? because you know my handwriting is too bad.”
