This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
In 1949, our Hindi film music got richer by the induction of a new lyricists team of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra and the new music director duo of Shanker-Jaikishan to the Hindi film industry. Raj Kapoor was their god father and the film BARSAAT (1949) was to decide their destiny. The film became a super hit and this combined team of lyricists and musical duo ruled the Hindi film industry for the next two decades with their down to earth lyrics with masterly compositions. It is said that with successes at every stage, ego problems do crop up leading to crack in the team. It was creditable that the entire team of Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailedra, Shanker-Jaikishanand Raj Kapoor lasted until the death of Shailendra in December 1966 and enriched the golden era of Hindi film music with their contributions.
One of the core members of this team was Hasrat Jaipuri (15/04/1922 – 17/09/1999). He was born in Jaipur as Iqbal Hussain. He came to Bomaby (Mumbai) in search of employment and got a bus conductor’s job. During his free time, he used to participate in the mushairas. Prithviraj Kapoor heard his couplets in one of the mushairas and recommended his name to his son Raj Kapoor who was planning to produce and direct BARSAAT (1949) with a new music director duo Shanker-Jaikishan. Raj Kapoor signedHasrat Jaipuri up for ‘Barsaat’ and his first recorded song was ‘jiya bekarar hai’. Since then, his association with Shanker-Jaikisan and Raj Kapoor combination continued till ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’(1971).
While Hasrat Jaipuri wrote most of his lyrics for the films of Shanker-Jaikishan, he intermittently worked with most other prominent music directors of the golden era and with the new generation of music directors of 80’s and 90’s too. He wrote lyrics for S DB urman, Chitragupt and Sardar Malik as well as for their sons R D Burman, Anand-Milind, Anu Malik respectively. However, I could not find any song written by him for Naushad and Roshan.
Hasrat Jaipuri was the master of light romantic songs written in simple language. So his songs like that of Shailendra had mass appeal. Some of the examples of his popular songs are “teri pyaari pyaari soorat ko”,”tumhi to meri poojaa ho”, “ye mera prem patra padhkar”,”dekho roothha na karo baat nazron ki suno”, “zindagi ek safar hai suhaana”, “saayonaaraa-saayonaaraa” etc.
Hasrat Jaipuri died on September 17, 1999 after playing one of the longest innings as a lyricist for Hindi film industry.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Hasrat Jaipuri, I have selected one of the songs from DIWAANA(1967) penned by him. The song is ‘ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat dihai’ sung by Mukesh and set to tune by Shanker-Jaikisan. The song is picturised on Raj Kapoor and Saira Bano. The video clip does not have the second stanza ofthe song while audio clip has full song. I had seen this film in my youngerdays but it did not impress me except Mukesh’s songs.

Song-Ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai (Deewaana)(1967) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics ( based on audio clip)
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
phool uthaa le to kalaai mein lachak aa jaaye
tujh haseenaa ko khudaa ne wo nazaakat di hai
main jise pyaar se chhoo loon
wo hi ho jaaye meraa
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
main guzartaa hi gayaa teri haseen raahon se
ek tere naam ne kyaa-kyaa mujhe himmat di hai
mere dil ko bhi zaraa dekh kahaan tak hoon main
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
tu agar chaahe to duniyaa ko nachaa de zaalim
chaal di hai tujhe maalik ne qayaamat di hai
main agar chaahoon to patthar ko banaa doon paani
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat di hai
ae sanam jisne tujhe chaand si soorat di hai
usi maalik ne mujhe bhi to mohabbat de hai

While ‘Diwana’ boasted of many hit songs, this song is my favourite. Bahut bahut shukriya, Sadanand-ji!
