Mujhe preet nagariya jaana hai

What a delightful song this is ! I have never heard this song before today. And luckily the picturization is as appealing as the audio. This is a stage song from film Ek Nazar, written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by S. D. Burman, master of duets in my humble opinion. The fact of this being a Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi duet is added bonus as i was looking for a duet by these two to discuss.

Rehman and Nalini Jaywant are on stage and are having a conversation about how to reach love land and ways of reaching it. Just before the song begins it can be seen that Rehman has been forced to be on stage and decides to stay, sing this duet with Nalini Jaywant as she enters the stage and starts the song. Both are embarrassed and doing their best not to show too much emotion, and we are treated to a lot of talking being done through eyes and closed expressions. I have not seen any film where these two were hero and heroine. Nalini Jaywant is someone who i associated with the song “nazar laagi raaja tore bangle par” with Dev Anand.

As I see in the list of songs posted in the blog, there is only one song from this film i.e. “Ek Nazar” – 1951 has found its way here so far. Meaning there are more gems to be found. This song is surely a forgotten gem.

Song-Mujhe preet nagariya jaana hai (Ek Nazar)(1951) Singers-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

mujhe preet nagariyaa jaana hai
koyi hai jo rastaa batlaa de
dil se dil kaise miltaa hai
koyi hai jo itnaa sikhlaa de
koyi hai
ho o
preet nagariyaa ke raahi
ee eee
o preet nagariyaa ke raahi
aa jaa meri baahon mein aa jaa
dekhen na kahin duniyaa waale
chupke se nigaahon mein aa jaa
dil ke badle dil denge ham
zaraa pyaar se hans kar sharmaa de

dil se dil kaise miltaa hai
koyi hai jo itnaa sikhlaa de
koyi hai

main aa to jaaun baahon mein
bas jaaun teri nigaahon mein
main aa to jaaun baahon mein
bas jaaun teri nigaahon mein
hmm hmm hmm hmm
anjaan hoon main dar lagtaa hai
kho jaaun na in raahon mein
iss raah mein kya kyaa hotaa hai
pehle mujhe itnaa batlaa de
dil se dil kaise miltaa hai
koyi hai jo itnaa sikhlaa de
koyi hai

iss raah mein pehle aankhon se
ik khel rachaaya jaata hai
nazron ke sahaare phir dil ko
dil se takraaya jaata hai
main tere dil ko tadpaaun
tu mere dil ko tadpaa de

mujhe preet nagariyaa jaana hai
koyi hai jo rastaa batlaa de
dil se dil kaise miltaa hai
koyi hai jo itnaa sikhlaa de
koyi hai

Indeed, this is the first time I have seen Rehman play the romantic lead even in a song. I have never disliked him in any role, he was always good, even if the movie was not. He looks so handsome here.

I went back to your post on Magroor. It is difficult for me download the movie given my sorry connection, but I can buy the DVD. I am going to be put it on my next shipment list.

I totally agree with ‘thandapani’. Rehman may have acted in bad movies but he was never bad in them! I really can’t think of any other actor more handsome, more regal looking than Rehman. And he ahd such a beautiful voice too! Not many people know that he was a pilot in the Indian Air Force before becoming an actor.

Oh really! That is something I did not know. I watched Rehman recently in Ghazal. He was a sort of a comic villian in that, he excelled in his role, even if the movie was sort of theek theek. I had never seen him do comedy of any kind before. The guy is an ace.

Never heard this song before but what a beautiful song! I can see myself watching this video many times. 🙂 Thank you so much, nahmji.

Totally agree about Rehman. Truly regal looking, whether in his early days as hero or later as a character actor. With a wonderful voice. Did not know he was a pilot in the IAF before coming to films – that’s an interesting bit of trivia.

I’ve not seen this film but I’ve seen one movie of Rehman as leading man (not counting his Guru Dutt movies as “alternate hero”) – and that was an awesome movie! It is Magroor (1950) – review available on memsaab’s blog. That movie was my first Nigar Sultana sighting too – and I fell totally in love with her. 🙂 I immediately wanted to see more of Nigar, so I saw “Sheesh Mahal”. And there, I got a bonus – it had not just Nigar but Naseem Banu too. 🙂

Both these actresses need to be better known.

Rehman acted with Nalini Jayawant also in Miss Bombay-1957.
Rehman is one of my favourite actors of the yesteryears. He was born on 23rd June 1921 in Lahore. His majestic looks are due to his family being from the Dynasty of King Amanullah khan of Afghanistan.
After completing education in Jabalpore,he joined Indian Air Force, but quit in 1944 and joined as a III asst.to Vishram Bedekar,Director in Prabhat Studios. His first entry in films was a 2 line role in Chand, but he debuted ,with Dev Anand i Hub Ek Hain in 1946.
He has acted in more than 100 films, atleast 20 of them,in lead roles. As he lost hair quickly,he had to turn to character roles. His notable films are Pardes,Pyar ki jeet,Badi Bahen,Dil diya dard liya,Dost,Magroor,Pyasa,Chaudhavi ka chaand,Sahib bibi aur Ghulam,Waqt etc.
He died of Cancer in 1979.

Thank you so much for this information, Arunji. Rehman is one of the actors I’ve wanted to know about for a long time. So he did his education in Jabalpur? Didn’t Prem Nath/Rajendranath (and by extension, the Kapoor family) also have something to do with Jabalpur? And if you consider that Ashok Kumar & family were from Khandwa, it would seem that Madhya Pradesh has had its share of contribution to Hindi film history. Atul himself has spent lots of time in MP – so another sign of MP’s contribution. 🙂

Haha ! This blog began at Jabalpur. For a year I stayed at the same colony as Rajendranath, but I never knew about it till I was told about this fact later.

Father of Premnath had opened a movie hall in Jabalpur called Empire Talkies. After the death of Premnath, this movie hall got neglected and it got closed. A few years ago, Army took over this movie hall.

Sir,

Thanks a lot for information about Rehman. I had put in a question for details about Rehman, a few months back in this blog, which went unanswered. I had hoped that you would provide some information. Thanx again.

I remember seeing him in Intequam and Chacha Bhatija too. The villians and character actors of yesteryear were as good looking as the heroes, and people like Pran, Rehman, Ajit, Jayant, K. N. Singh etc. had great voices and diction too. Even Iftikhaar to a certain extent, who was type cast as a police officers in later years.

nahm ji,
I am sorry to learn that your earlier query about Rehman went unanswered.I must not have seen that, otherwise it would not have happened.
All the villains mentioned by you, started their careers as Heros, including Iftekhar.
They were good looking, which was a prerequisite for entry into films those days. Each had a special style and his own fan following.
