Ab agar hamse khudaayi bhi khafa ho jaaye

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

“Laila Majnu” was the debut film for Ranjeeta. For a number of year after I saw “Ankhiyon ke jharoke se” she was my favorite. I made it a point to see all her films, even those obscure movies with Mithun Chakravarty and music by Bappi Lahiri. I saw her films right upto “Rajput” (1981). Than she sort of dropped out of scene. There may have been a few more films, but I dont know. I dont remember how, but ” Ankhiyon ke jharoke se” I might have seen on T. V. only. ‘Rajput’ we had all seen in the theatre. That was a time when Amitabh Bachchan was in full flow. We would see all his films, not as soon as they released, but it was usually after the school exams were over and on the day of the last paper or the weekend. My father would book the tickets in advance. “Do aur Do paanch” onwards all films of Amitabh Bachhan were a must watch for all of us. They usually had a long run a theatre, unlike what happens now. If you want to see a movie in the theatre you have to do it within a few weeks. If dont manage to, then it will be gone from all the nearby movie halls.

Anyway, coming back to Ranjeeta, I have seen her “Qismat”, “Sultana” etc with Mithun. Than there was another movie called “Khwaab” again with Mithun C. Every summer vacations, we all were packed off to native place, to a district and town which is still a bone of contention between Maharashtra & Karnataka. One would think as if it is not in india only and it has to wrested from the enemy at any cost. Such is a zeal for possession of Belgaum District, for some. It is worth possessing I must agree that but not at the cost of peace for all concerned. In the 80’s Belgaum city was a tranquil small town, with no traffic snarls, no signals and no road dividers even within the city. We all cousins would assemble there for the major part of summer vacations at one or other relative’s places. We had one pass time , ie to watch movies. To see all the movies running in all the theatre were our target to achieve. We would mostly walk all the way to the theater. I just dont know from where we got the energy. tickets were Rs. 3/50 to Rs. 5/50 depending on the quality of the theatre/screen.

Even now, whenever we travel upto Belgaum by road, we can feel the change in climate, the greenery and the unique red soil which looks so enchanting alongside the concrete of NH 4. One also feels the altitude rising gradually. At some turns of the road it looks as a landscaped painting with green and red dominating. Thinking of watching Ranjeeta’s movies has prompted all this reminicising.

Let’s come back to “Laila Majnu” again. This is the last movie for which Madan Mohan gave music. I am not sure if this song is a Madan Mohan composition or Jaidev’s. Earthmusic site is giving Madan Mohan’s name for all songs of this film. This is again a Lata -Rafi duet and lyricist is Saahir Ludhianvi. This dream sequence song is i think one of the few happy sounding in the film. The other one being “is reshmi paazeb ki jhankaar ke sadqe” . I would like to say, keep watching this space for more songs of Madan Mohan or ‘laila Majnu” or what ever, but i dont want to hi-jack this project, which is Atul ji’s baby first and foremost. He is a magnanimous soul letting all of us bask in the glory reflected from his dedication, devotion and hard work.

Achha Atul-ji, you’re from Belgaum! Lovely place. My wife and Ihad stayed there for a fortnight with some friends of ours. Reminded me so much of Kerala. Such a pity it’s a bone of contention between Karnataka and Maharashtra!
About Ranjeeta, she came with a bright sparkle but just faded away. There were whispered rumours those days about her drug habit. Mind you, just whispers! No one knows if it’s true or not……

Menon ji,
The above post is written by Nahm ji and NOT Atul ji,and she is only describing about road travel to Belgaum.
Atul ji is not from Belgaum.
Belgaum is a very wonderful place as far as climate and food is concerned. The real Karnatak food zayaka starts from Belgaum. There are many tourist spots around Belgaum. It may be a disputed town as far as the politicians are concerned, but Marathi and Kannad people-the common people, that is-are living there since ages happily and peacefully.

As already clarified by others, I am not from Belgaum, nahm is. However, I have been to Belgaum a few times between 1994 and 1996, when I was based at Hubli during that period. I did not visit too many places in Belgaum though. I tended to travel by train from Hubli to Belgaum and back.

Sir,
Thank you for the clarification. We are from Belgaum, in fact i was born there. My parents and my husband is also from same dist. It is on the outer fringes of Deccan area. My parents are settled in Mumbai since the 60’s, so we all were brought up in Mumbai. You are right in saying that co-existance has never been an problem at the people level.

Nahm, I loved this movie too. It had such lovely songs and I liked the lead pair, Ranjita and Rishi, they make a cute pair. Your write up is fabulous and evokes memories of the times and this movie in my mind. Thanks for posting this.

There are many from Mumbai who go to Belgaum and stay for month or so in some hotel and enjoy the salubrious climate of the place. I too enjoyed staying for few days.

Oh, lovely write-up. I love to read about people’s reminiscences of a place or era. It transports me right there.

I’ve never been to Belgaum – I think I may have passed it while taking a long train journey from Bombay to Bangalore once. I’ve always liked the towns of India, they have quite a different character from the metros.

Your memories of traffic, going to see movies at Rs 3.50 / 5.50 remind me a lot of my own younger days. But then the ticket prices were still lower. An earlier era. It is all relative. 🙂

Coming to Laila Majnu, I am SO happy to see a song of this movie here. I liked Ranjeeta a lot and she and Rishi made a good pair in this movie. All the songs in this movie are very good – I think I wrote up one of them (tere dar pe aaya hoon). I saw this movie when we (my family) were travelling through Orissa. Saw this in a hall in Bhubaneswar. I remember when the song “koi patthar se na maare” started, there was a lot of whistling happening. It was a pretty popular song.

I have also been confused sometimes about who composed which song in this movie. Arunji says 6-MM, 3-Jaidev. If he could help us identify which songs were Jaidev’s, it would be wonderful and put some of the debate to rest.

Lol at ‘whistling at songs’. In Jamnagar I have seen people throw money at the screen when good songs came on. Curiously, I have seen that happen during a screening (a re-run) of Anmol Ghadi. People really had a good taste in those days.

Nahm Ji,
Sorry to deviate from song. You have written ” ( Belgaum ) is worth possessing..”. I would say it is yours as much as anybody else’s .. What does it matter which administration it is under. All politicians are same. There will be no more or no less of Belgaum, even with change of administrators. 🙂

Ankeet, I love Madan Mohan. But Jaidev has to his credit many beautiful songs. The ones from this film are not too popular.
