Wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye

“Pyaar Ka Saagar” (1961) was a Filmrays Production. It was directed by Devendra Goel. The movie had Rajendra Kumar, Meena Kumari, Madan Puri, Mohan Choti, Malika, O. P. Ralhan, Leela Mishra, Jagdish Raj etc in it.
The mention of the movie does not ring bells, but when one listens to the songs of this movie, one tends to exclaim- “wow, so this song is from this movie !” I did that for the song Sadaa khush rahe tu jafaa karne waale . And now I find myself doing the same for another song, viz “wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye”.
In fact I was surprised to realise that a song as iconic as this one was not yet discussed in the blog. I knew that the song is iconic, but I was not aware of the details of the song. It is only now that I realise that this song is from “Pyaar Ka Saagar” (1961) and that it is picturised on a blind Rajendra Kumar, who sings this melancholic song addressing it to his estranged beloved Meena Kumari, who is located far away, but seems to be able to listen to the song, judging from her reactions. Indeed this calls for a modification in Ava’s theory of phuysics which states that sound travels faster than light in Hindi movie songs. The corollary to that theory, based on the evidence of this song is that sound travels at the speed of light in Hindi movie songs and is audible to the recipient of the song, no matter how far he/she is located from the source of sound.
The song ends with Rajendra Kumar tripping against a chair. 🙂

Atul-ji, Khyati-ji and Arun-ji, bahut bahut shukriya! Whether it’s ‘curse the heroine’ or ‘blame the heroine’ we can compile a list as long as our monthly grocery list!

Maybe Meena is in the other room and is able to overhear the song, hence the expressions.

This is one of those sad songs that heroes in our movies belt out, accusing their lovers of two-timing, heartlessness, deceit, avarice…the list is endless. In this case, Rajendra Kumar has lost his eyesight and sings this song cursing Meena Kumari.
But wait! Is she a vamp? Of course not! Circumstances (yes, that dirty villain in our movies!) force her to get married to Madan Puri, who turns out to be…Tan..tan.ta!…Rajendra Kumar’s brother. In a sympathetic role, if I remember!
By the way, there’s an excellent duet by Asha/Rafi…”Mujhe pyar ki, zindagi dene wale…”

Few months back I watched this movie on tv with lots of expectations. But only songs were the highlights of the movie. Can’t tolerate Madan Puri as a nice guy in those days.
