Bekas ki tabaahi ke saamaan hazaaron hain

Posted on: April 23, 2012

“Sone Ki Chidiyaa”(1958) was a Film India Corporation production. It was directed by Shahid Lateef. The movie had Nutan, Balraj Sahni, Talat Mehmood, Amar, Bikram Kapoor, Zebunissa, Pratima Devi, Dhumal, Altaf etc in it.

From the title and judging from the songs of this movie, it appears that the story of this movie was somewhat similar to “Pyaasa” (1957) with the difference that Guru Dutt’s role here was played by Nutan. I do not know whether my guess, based purely by the picturisation of the songs is correct. I request our knowledgeable readers to confirm/ refute by observation.

This movie had nine songs in it. As many as five of these songs have already been discussed in the blog.

Here is the sixth song from this movie. This song is a pathos filled song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Nutan who lip syncs this song on a stage.

8 out of nine songs from this movie were written by Sahir Ludhianvi, but one song was penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. This is the song that Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote and one must be saud that this song is quite indistinguishable from the Sahir Ludhianvi songs that we are so used to.

O P Nayyar is the music director and he has come up with a music that sounds quite un O P Nayyar like and even S D Burman like towards the end of the song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Bekas ki tabaahi ke saamaan hazaaron hain (Sone Ki Chidiya)(1958) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

bekas ki tabaahi ke
saamaan hazaaron hain
deepak toh akela hai,
toofaan hazaaron hain
toofaan hazaaron hain
bekas ki tabaahi ke
saamaan hazaaron hain
deepak toh akela hai,
toofaan hazaaron hain
toofaan hazaaron hain
laachaar kiya hamko
laachaar kiya hamko
dukh dard jalan aansoo,
kya kya naa diya hamko
kya kya naa diya hamko
bhagwan tere ham per
ehsaan hazaaron hain
bhagwan tere ham per
ehsaan hazaaron hain
deepak toh akela hai,
toofaan
toofaan hazaaron hain

soorat ke toh insaan hain
dushman hai mohabbat ke
sab chor hain daaku hai
maa behnon ki izzat ke
soorat ke toh insaan hain
dushman hain mohabbat ke
sab chor hain daakoo hai
maa behnon ki izzat ke
maa behnon ki izzat ke
kehne ko zamaane mein
insaan hazaaron hai
kehne ko zamaane mein
insaan hazaaron hai
deepak toh akela hai,
toofan hazaaron hain
toofan hazaaron hain

hamdard nahin milta
phir aaye jahaan bhar mein
hamdard nahin milta
phir aaye jahaan bhar mein
moti ki tarah pyaase
rote hain samandar mein
moti ki tarah pyaase
rote hain samandar mein
apna hi nahin koi
anjaan hazaaron hain
apna hi nahin koi
anjaan hazaaron hain

I vaguely remember the story of ‘Sone ki Chidiya’. Nutan is a film heroine and Talat is a film hero, while Balraj Sahni is a director who secretly loves Nutan . But Nutan falls in love with Talat who turns out to be a total cad! Balraj saves her from doom. I’m not sure but the story went along these lines…….
Nutan looked so stunningly beautiful, while silken voiced Talat was his usual handsome self. Balraj lent his quiet dignity. Every song is a priceless gem!

Atul ji,
Sone ki chidiya depicted the plight of the money spinning actress Laxmi(Nutan),who is exploited by her extended family for her money. She is treated as a ‘Hen laying golden eggs’ or a Sone ki chidiya.
Amar(Talat mehmood) a film gossip Journo ditches her when he finds that she does not control her money.Shrikant(Balraj Sahani) a poet truly loves her but initially she thinks that he is a cheater too,but realises at the end of the film, his true love and goes back to Shrikant leaving all her money.

I can see the similarity “pyaasa” and “Sone Ki chidiya” by watching the song just now. Judging by the song “Raat bhar ka hai mehmaan andhera, kis ki roke rukaa hai saveraa”, this film must have happy ending. Deshmukh Sir has given the story, too. Majrooh’s poetry was distinct from Sahir’s style, in my opinion.

I do not agree with the view that this song by Majrooh is distinct from Sahir. As a matter of fact, if there is one song by majrooh which is quite close to the ideology and diction of Sahir, it is this song from Sone ki chiriya. It is not surprising. Majrooh was a real versatile lyricist who could adapt according to the need of the situation and the theme of the film. This song esalily fits in the film which highlights the heartless exploitation of a highly talented girl by the very people surrounding her and claiming to be her wel-wishers. After all said and done, both Sahir and Majrooh were communists and shared the same values. It is not very easy to decide between the two as to who is greater as a lyricist.
