Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Pyaar huaa chupke se

Posted on: April 25, 2012

Most songs of this blog are from an era between 1931 to 1980s. Songs later than 1980s are often described by me as songs of post golden era when the songs were not what they used to be in the earlier decades.

I am not the only one to make this demarcation of songs of Hindi movies. There are many people who think likewise. It is interesting that at my younger age, my tastes were just the opposite. At that time I only wanted to listen to the current (read 1970s) songs and I disliked old songs. Even songs more than 5 to 6 year old were regarded as old songs by me. Is it not curios to realise that at an young age, I would only listen to current songs, but at my present age I would not listen to current songs, but love to listen to old songs. These days I like to listen to precisely those songs that I did not like to listen then, viz songs of 1960s and earlier.

But it does not mean that good songs did not get created after 1980s. They were created, and in quite a few cases, they were created by the very same people who are often believed to be responsible for the deterioration in quality of Hindi movie music. But by and large, the overall standard of songs declined considerably after 1980s.

Even in this barren period, we came across some movie albums whose music took the nation by storm and media naively hailed it as the return of the golden era of music.

It was one fine day in 1993 when I listened to a few songs that I had never heard before and they felt like songs from 1980s. The music was stunning and I wondered how I had never heard these songs before. I subsequently came to know that these songs were from a new movie called “1942 A love story” (1993) and that its music was created by R D Burman who by that time was no more. R D Burman, the most influential music director of 1970s, whose dominance in 1970s was absolute had died unsung and as a disillusioned man in 1991. He was short of work by the time he died at quite a young age (he was barely 53 years old then). Though he had left a legacy of hundreds of great songs behind, this music of “1942 a love story” (1993) was quite something. a few in the media in their typical manner went overboard and hailed it as R d Burman’s greatest ever musical creation. I must admit that I did not find much wrong with this assessment, though I now believe, with the benefit of “maturity” that one should not make comparisons and one should just ennjoy music on its own merit instead of labeling music as the greatest, or the second greatest etc.

The songs of “1942 a love story” (1993) stunned music lovers and took the audience by storm. I have no doubt in my mind that the movie became a hit because of the music. a fresh as lily Manisha Koirala, then a few movies old in the industy looked at her prettiest in this movie and she was the other main reason for the success of the movie.

The movie itself was no great shakes. the movie was supposedly a movie where anil Kapoor was a freedom fighter, but I found little authenticity in the picturisation. Showing people of 1942 dressing and behaving like peole of 1990s, using appliances that were not available in 1940s etc meant that I watched the movie only once and no prizes for guessing what drew me to the movie hall in the first place.

The songs of this movie are all pure gems, and they continue to remain pure gems to this day.

The movie unearthed a new singing talent before Hindi movie audience. It was Kavita Krishnamurty who did playback for Manisha Koirala in all the songs. What a refreshing new voice it was to listen to ! And she was superb in what was her debut in Hindi movies.

Jawed Akhtar, who till 1970s was a part of the Salim Javed writing duo had taken up lyrics writing after splitting with Salim Khan and he was doing well in his sporadic assignments as a lyricist. And the lyrics of this movie are a testimony to the fact that he was a chip of the old block as far as writing great lyrics were concerned. H in fact had started his lyrics writing in 1980s itself when his father the great Jaan Nissar Akhtar was still active.

Guess who has sent me the lyrics of this song. It is sent to me by Peevesie, who was perhaps a toddler when this movie was released. But she loves this songas does her mother and brother. Yes, they are the first family of this blog. Peevesie and her Mom are regulars to this blog and off late Peevesie’s brother has also left a comment where he petitioned me to consider posting a few new songs too. Indeed why not, as long as they are as great as the song under discussion.

Here is this fantastic song from “1942 A love story” (1993). It is sung by Kavita Krishnamurty and it is picturised on Manisha Koirala. This is a song which is best savoured while listening to the full audio instead of watching the curtailed versions.

Here the the longest audio version of this song that is available on internet, though Peevesie says it is still 10 seconds shorter than what she has heard in the past.

Here is this fantastic song from “1942 A love story” (1993). The music of this movie earned R D Burman a posthumous Filmfare award for best music composition.

“1942 A love story” (1994) had six songs in it. All the songs of the movie have been covered in the blog. Here are the links of the other songs of the movie:

Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa lagaa(1942 A Love Story)
Kuchh naa kaho kuchh bhi naa kaho (1942 A love story)
Rimjhim rimjhim rumjhum rumjhum (1942 A Love Story)
Rooth na jaana tumse kahoon to (1942 A Love Story)
Ye safar bahut hai kathin magar (1942 A Love Story)

kyun naye lag rahein yeh dharti gagan
maine pucha toh boli yeh pagli pawan

maine poocha toh boli yeh pagli pawan
pyaar hua

titliyon se suna…aa

maine kissa baagh ka
baagh mein thhi ik kali
sharmeeli anchhui
ik din
manchala bhanvra aa gaya
khil uthi wo kali
paaya roop naya
poochhti thhi kali
ki mujhe kya hua
phool hansa
chupke se
pyaar hua
chupke se

maine baadal se kabhi
ee
ho maine baadal se kabhi
ye kahaani thhi sunee
parvaton ki ik nadi
milne saagar se chali
jhoomti
ghoomti
ho naachti dolti
kho gayi apne saagar mein jaake nadi
dekhke pyaar ki aisi jaadugari
chaand khila
chupke se
pyaar hua
chupke se
kyun naye lag rahe yeh dharti gagan
maine poocha toh boli yeh pagli pawan
pyaar hua
chupke se

Your review is top class, Atul ji! R D Burman would have been so proud of his music had he only lived long enough for the release of this movie. The movie, as you so rightly put it, was no great shakes. The costumes, the hairstyle, the gadgets etc. were all wrong for the 1940s. Sadly, Hindi movie makers have absolutely no idea about period costumes. One has only to look at the SRK version of ‘Devdas’! Idiotic costumes!
Back to this movie, Madhuri Dixit was the first choice and when she turned it down, Monisha Koirala stepped in. And she was just superb!
There were also rumours that Kavitha Krishnamoorthy was to sing all the songs but Lata did some arm twisting and managed to sing “Kuch na kaho…” The Mangeshkar sisters could be the most unprofessional duo! Ask Vani Jairam.

That way I sometimes find some parallel in R D Burman and Madan Mohan. If Madan Mohan too would have lived a few months longer, he would have seen his next two movies breaking his jinx of being flops because these movies were “Mausam” and “Laila Majnu”

So true, Atul-ji! Whenever I think of Madan Mohan, sadness is the emotion I experience.

this song deserves to find a place in this blog.

I agree that all good songs ( with meaningful lyrics) irrespective of years should find a place in this blog though I am also guilty of drawing a imaginary line of cut-off years between songs of golden-non golden era.

A couple of songs of 21st century which I like :
1, Chaand sifaarish jo kartaa hamaari -FANNA (2006)
2. Aye khudaa mujhko bataa tu rehtaa kahan – (PAATHSHAALA (2010)

Peevesi,
Thanks so much for the song. It brought me some sweet childhood memories of my kids’. In 1995, I went to India with my two younger boys as they wanted to celebrate/enjoy Diwali festival in India. They had heard the enjoyment of doing “fireworks” also. It was a wonderful trip. They still remember the fireworks, rangoli, sweets, meeting friends and relatives,….It was during this trip, they watched the film Sholay and Zanjeer (both with AB) on TV and their love for hindi cinema started. While I was visiting Ahemdavad, I met my husband’s colleague who gave them the audio cassette of this movie along with Bombay. After returning back, we went to Savannah, Georgia on a vacation as my husband had a conference in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. My entire family loves music and we used to carry many audio cassettes (then CDs and now, ipod 🙂 ) with us so we could listen to these songs while driving a rental car. My husband and I would prefer old songs and kids would just listen to these two ACs only. They loved this song in particular with just the last part in particular
dolo na dolo na………
(We were clue less what were these words back then and still not clear. Aap galat ho aisa nahi kahe rahi hoon, lekin it sounds something different)
They would just rewind this part many, many, ……times. And when we took a tour of an art galley, it was hard for us to stop them singing this part even in that area. My husband still listens to these songs of 1942 A Love Story with the enjoyment of the music and sadness of missing R D Burman. Thanks again.

The chorus part could be gibberish or it could be words of some other language (Bangla perhaps). I request knowledgeable people to suggest corrections in these lyrics, if any.

even i used to think it was “der na der na” or as atul says it cud b d Bangla words “Dolo na”, but d visual accompanying is simply something different.

My son still hums this part as
ghooruna ghooruna ghooruna ghooruna….. 🙂
It is so much tuned with his memory, that he just doesn’t care what the real words are. He just loves the tune of this part. It’s me, who wants to know the correct word. Hope someone will help us out.

Please get your facts correct 1942 ALS was released in 1994 not 1993 and RD Burman died on Jan 4th 1994 [not 1991]. Thanks

Oops, you are right. But the fact that the movie was released after the death of R D Burman still holds good.
