Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

cham cham chamkaa saraa jahaan
dhadkan gaaye dil hai jawaan
jaan se pyaare pyaar pukaare
aisaa samaan phir kahaan
cham cham chamkaa saraa jahaan
dhadkan gaaye dil hai jawaan
jaan se pyaare pyaar pukaare
aisaa samaan phir kahaan

shabnam se bheegaa hai mausam
doobaa hai masti mein aalam
shabnam se bheegaa hai mausam
doobaa hai masti mein aalam
soye nazaare chand sitare
chup hai zameen aasman
ho o o o
cham cham chamaka saaraa jahaan
dhadkan gaaye dil hai jawaan
jaan se pyaare pyaar pukaare
aisaa samaan phir kahaan

soyi hai aankhon mein neenden
jaagi hai dil mein ummeeden
soyi hai aankhon mein neenden
jaagi hai dil mein ummeeden
mast hawaayen saaz bajaaye
gaati hai tanhaaiyaan
ho o o o
cham-cham chamka saaraa jahaan
dhadkan gaaye dil hai jawaan
jaan se pyaare pyaar pukaare
aisaa samaan phir kahaan

Needless to say, Kuldip Kaur must be the’Bade Ghar ki Bahu’. An arrogant, heartless woman! And educated too! Movies made in the 50s and the 60s often featured the ‘bad girl’ as an educated girl and the illiterate heroine as pure as driven snow!
Our censors were ever ready with a pair of scissors to snip ‘kissing scenes’ and generally scenes they perceived as ‘hamare Bharatiya sanskriti ke khilaf’. But they blissfully and merrily allowed scenes where an educated female automatically translated as a cruel ogress! This sent out wrong signals to moviegoers, especially in the smaller towns and rural areas where educating a female child was the least of priorities in the first place!

Yes, such movies with simplistic storylines sent wrong messages to the masses.

How silly! As if the movies now are all educational and give moral lessons ! Sir, the movies are made to make money and the producers try to play on the sentiments of the masses and show what they think the masses would like. This was actually the perception at that time that educated “Bahu” would break the joint pariwaar and hijack the kamau husaband and live happily while tje rest suffer financial problems.

By the way, I recently saw KISSI SE NA KAHANA (Hrishikesh Mukherjee;s film) in which Utpal Dutta wants a gaon ki gouri for his padha-likha son, Farooq Sheikh who is in love with doctorni Deepti Naval.
And with the help of Saeed Jafery make Deepti Naval a village belle and get married. This was much recent –1980 or so.
