Mukesh and his Co-Singers –20
This post today brings us to the 900th song of Mukesh on the blog. This is a significant milestone, considering that the total songs of by Mukesh are just about one thousand. As we get closer to that number, the songs are becoming harder to trace.
Today, 22 July is legendary singer Mukesh’s birthday. (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976)
And this is his 900th song on the blog. As such, it is a very special post.
There is a possibility that this could be his last century on the blog and that he is unlikely to reach the magical 4-digit tally. However, I shall leave no stone unturned to disprove myself. Long ago, I had even made a mental note and earmarked a unique song to post as his 1000th song on the blog, if we could manage to do so. However, it was covered by one of the editors. Can anyone guess that unique song ?
MGK-II cites 901 filmi and 79 NFS of Mukesh. So, the total is 20 short of 4-digit to represent on our blog which features predominantly Hindi language and its associated dialects. To make matters worse for reaching the magically figure many songs in MGK-II are not available and also version songs are considered as individual songs in the tally of 901. So, the net count on the blog will be much lesser.
However, there is a brighter side too. Many short songs are not considered as separate songs in MGK-II and the same serial number is retained with a suffix. However, on the blog, these are considered as separate songs. Further, there are a couple of songs of Mukesh from other films wherein the original songs have been retained and considered as separate songs on the blog. Also, Tulsi Ramayan which Mukesh rendered in 7-8 kaands and the epic poem being in Awadhi language can also be included as a few songs. And then the most encouraging feature is another small body of work by Mukesh not included in MGK-II. More on this in my next posts.
In view of the above, I am somehow confident and hopeful of reaching the 4 -digit mark on the blog and as I said earlier, no stone shall be left unturned.
Anyway, as we stand today, more than 90% of his Hindi filmi and NFS are already covered on the blog. To celebrate his birthday with some unique post on the blog, I came up with this arrangement to feature the songs of Mukesh bhaiyya and Choti Behen Lata Mangeshkar.

More than the writeup, what really matters with such posts is the preparation of the table in chronological order. Though it is time consuming and strenuous, the joy of seeing the results is unmatched and truly gratifying. Of particular interest to me is seeing the great composers lined up in the last column of the table. I hope readers enjoy the compilation as much as I have in preparing one of the best paring of duets in HFM.
Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar, the very mention of the two legends in unison, floods the mind with dozens and dozens of their melodious duets of late 40s to 70s. Each of them has sung duets with many other co-singers, but when they came together there was magic in the air which remains undiminished to this day. They have many phenomenal hits which catered to the different tastes of music lovers. Over the years there have been many radio and TV programmes all over the world featuring the two artists.
Coming to the compilation, if one scrolls through the table, there are 150 odd songs. Each a gem in its own class. To write on each of the songs will be a daunting task as most of the songs are extremely popular and the size of the post will be too long.
Hence, I have decided to skip outlining of the duets which are anyway extremely popular and try to write some unique aspects and trivia of the two great singers. But first the table itself with its glorious listings.

As I said earlier in the post, here is a short list of facts and trivia of the two singers to the extent that my memory and knowledge serve me right.
- The very first duet that the two singers sang is a patriotic song under the great Ghulam Haider in Majboor (1948). Mukesh has this debut patriotic duet trivia with Geeta Roy (later Dutt) too.
- Two duets of the ‘Maker of Mukesh’, Anil Biswas, from the film ‘Anokha Pyar’ (1948) are not featured in the table. The reason being that they are the record versions and the film soundtrack features Meena Kapoor with Mukesh. However, there exist multiple solo/duets of same songs in the film and in fact Lata features in film soundtracks also. I will go by Harish ji’s MGK-II wherein the two duets with Lata Mangeshkar are separated as version songs. The links to these two beautiful melodies can be found here and here.
- Raj Kapoor’s debut directorial film ‘Aag’ (1948) had no Lata Mangeshkar. But starting with ‘Barsaat’ (1949), there was another kind of barsaat in almost all subsequent films of actor Raj Kapoor as Lata and Mukesh invariably featured in most of the songs.
- S. No 31 has Mukesh singing only 4-5 words and it is considered a duet. Raj Kapoor could have as well sung the few words himself, but he thought Mukesh was always the best bet compared to his own voice also.
- Mukesh introduced Lata Mangeshkar to Naushad as he had good rapport with him in late 40s. We all know how Lata Mangeshkar and Naushad shaped each other’s careers thereupon. Later, Mukesh and Naushad fell off with each other. In mid 70s when they started to work together again, although sparingly, we have only one duet of the two singers for Naushad at s. No 143.
- There is again only one duet for Jaidev at S. No 121. Incidentally, the same was covered by self in one of my posts earlier. Further, a few more composers like Bulo C Rani, SD Burman, Hemant Kumar, Hunslal Bhagatram, GS Kholi, Sardar Malik, Sonik Omi, Khayyam etc. have only one duet of the combo. I have covered most of these composers in my other series wherein their entire collaboration with Mukesh can be read.
- 147 as we all know is the only song in HFM wherein Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar joined the two singers.
- Films like ‘Malhaar’ (1951), ‘Shri 420’ (1955), ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Bahti Hai’ (1960), ‘Hariyali Aur Raasta’ (1962), ‘Dulha Dulhan’ (1964), ‘Milan’ (1967) etc have 3 duets of the combo whereas ‘Sanyaasi’ (1975) has 4 duets. As readers are aware, ‘Sanyaasi’ (1975) was’ reunion of sorts for Shanker and Lata Mangeshkar. Mukesh along with Manoj Kumar was instrumental in making Lata sing for Shanker again and the resulting songs created a craze all over the country.
- Number of duets of the two singers for Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Kalyanji Anandji are 37, 27 and 20 respectively. The three composers account for nearly 56% of the duets of the two singers.
- Mukesh composed 4 solos of Lata Mangeshkar in his film ‘Anuraag’ (1956). He composed, acted and produced the film. Sadly, the film has no duet of the two singers.
- There is one unreleased song in Sangam (1964), “Kabhi na Kabhi, Kahin na Kahin”. MGK-II cites it as solo. However, at many locations on the net and as well from ‘reliable’ sources who have seen the premier, this was apparently a duet with Lata. I have not included it in the table as the factual conclusion has not been made and there is no audio trace of the song yet.
- Sadly, Lata Mangeshkar along with Nitin Mukesh had to bring back the mortal remains of Mukesh from US. The holy relationship of a brother and sister had to end in such an unfortunate event far away from the shores of the sub-continent.
Going through the table there are many more trivia associated with the popular songs. But the post will be too long. I hope readers will enjoy their favourite duets of Lata and Mukesh all at one place with complete details.
Since, this is a very important post, I request readers to point out any song which I may have inadvertently missed. I am always ready to stand corrected.
Coming to today’s song, it is not surprising that almost all duets of the duo have been covered on the blog. For some strange reason a filmi and a song from an unreleased film remain to be posted.
I consider it my good omen that I have the opportunity of posting the last filmi duet of Mukesh with Lata Mangeshkar on the blog.
It’s a Holi festival song and I again take the liberty from the editors to post this song on a non-Holi day.
Readers will remember that my post on the duets of Mukesh with Asha Bhosale also featured a Holi song one month before the festival and again I was compelled to take it up as it was the last remaining duet of the duo. Thus, I have covered both the sisters with Holi festival related songs
Something similar happens today, and I take up this Holi song from ‘Mera Dost’ (1969). The cast list of actors has Sheikh Mukhtar, Mumtaz, M Rajan, Aruna Irani, Mukri, KN Singh, Raj Mehra, Durga Khote, Ratna and Kamal Kapoor, et. al.
Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi share the credits for music and lyrics respectively. The film was directed by Roshanlal Malhotra and produced by Maya productions.
Two out of six songs from the movie have already been covered and this duet is the third to be posted. The video of this film is not available, but from good sources, this song is picturized on M Rajan and Mumtaz. M Rajan’s full name is Rajan Malhotra and he is the son of Roshan Lal Malhotra, the director of the film.
The song itself is quite jovial and a treat to listen. A gem hidden so far appears on Mukesh’s birthday and as his 900th post on the blog. Listen and enjoy.

Today’s duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1996 movie ‘Anyaay Hi Anyaay’. As per information available in Hindi Filmography the date of censor certificate for this movie is 01.11.1996. However the movie available on internet has its date of censor certificate as 12.09.1997. Otherwise also sources mentioned that this movie was delayed in making by several years and finally when it got released the music composer of this movie RD Burman had already passed away in 1994. This movie is considered as the last movie (released) where the music is composed by RD Burman as per his filmography. Sources also mentioned that the makers of this movie marketed the audio cassettes blurb of this movie with RD Burman’s photo and mentioning it as his last release.
‘Anyaay Hi Anyaay’ was produced and directed by Tarun Wadhwa for Laharshta Creations. He also wrote the story of this movie. The cast of this movie has Madan Jain, Reshma Singh, Shafi Inamdar, Archana Puran Singh, Amrit Pal, Reeta Bhaduri, Alok Nath, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sulbha Deshpande, Naqvi Ahmed, Brij Gopal, Baby Suman, Paintal, Mahaveer Shah, Malvinderjeet and others.

‘Kaanoon Kee Aawaaz’ (1989) was produced by R Kumar and was directed by P Chandrasekhara Reddy. The cast included Shatrughan Sinha and Jaya Prada in the lead roles supported by Prem Chopra, Asrani, Aruna Irani, Raja Babu, Shekhar Suman, Maneka Babbar, Maneck Irani, Leena Das, Gulnar Irani, Bob Christo etc. Probably, this is the only Hindi film in which Jaya Prada worked with her elder brother, Raja Babu (also known as Raj Babu).

This article takes up for discussion a film which was recently released on a TV channel after four decades from the date of censor certificate. The film’s shootings started sometime in mid-70s with the title. ‘Aawaaz’. Songs were recorded in 1978. The film was delayed and got censor certificate on March 13, 1986, under a new name, ‘Saugaat’ (1986). The songs of the film were released in 1986. It is stated that the producer of the film stalled its release due to some unresolved financial issues. Finally, the film was premiered on Zee Classic on February 06, 2026, and on YouTube on March 17, 2026. The film has Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. Shabana Azmi has a double role in the film as twin sisters.

Today’s song is the last and final song from the social film ‘Khoj’ (1953). With this song the film has all songs covered and it is Yippeee’d !
The film was made by Dogra films, Bombay, a banner owned by the producer of this film CR Dogra. The film was directed by Balwant Bhatt, elder brother of another director Nanabhai Bhatt. Music was by Nisar Bazmi who migrated to Pakistan and became a big name there. The cast of the film was Shammi, Mahipal, Satish, Kammo, Rajan Kapoor, Omkar Devaskar, Helen (Richardson), Rajni and many others.

Today’s song is from a 75 year old mythological film ‘Laxmi Narayan’ (1951).
The film was made by Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by the B and C grade film specialist Nanubhai Bhatt. Music was by another specialist SN Tripathi. Lyricists were BD Mishra and Ramesh Pandey. The cast of the film included Meena Kumari, Mahipal, SN Tripathi, Dalpat, Urmila, BM Vyas, Sulochana, Vasant Rao Pehalwan and many others.

‘Darmiyaan’ (1997) was produced by RV Pandit under the banner of PAN Productions and was directed by Kalpana Lajmi who also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues for the film. The main cast included Kiron Kher, Sayaji Shinde, Rita Ganguly, Shahbaaz Khan, Tabu and Arif Zakaria (debutant).
