Aankhen chaar hotey hotey

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Trawling, even for a few minutes, through the vast collection on the internet posted by so many lovers of Hindi music, the effort never goes unrewarded. And here is one delightful reward that I bumped into few days back, as I was looking for songs by Shailendra. A song that I heard long back, first time when I saw this film on Doordarshan, as a child, and then lost track in the interim. The film is ‘Insaan Jaag Utthaa’ from 1959. The film is a well known production from the banner of Shakti Films, Bombay, produced and directed by Shakti Samant. The main star cast of the film includes Madhubala, Sunil Dutt, Nazir Hussain, Minoo Mumtaz, Bipin Gupta, Nishi, Sunder, Krishnakant, Madanpuri, Manju, Praveen Paul, Shyam Kumar, Kesav Rana, SM Thakkar, TN Charlie and a host of character artists viz. Prem Anand, Sailen Bose, Kalpana, Mauji, Gautam, Kundan, Pacchi, Manju etc.

The film is one of the many that the film industry produced, showcasing the re-building and modernization of India under the Nehruvian policies. The setting is a large dam construction site, and the storyline is about the people, both good and bad, who worked on such projects. As the name suggests, the film intended to highlight the “new” awakening happening in our country at that time. And Sunil Dutt, the primary protagonist in the narrative is a disillusioned and despaired young man, who finds his bearings, and also finds love after coming to this project. It is an interesting film, overflowing with all formula ingredients of action, comedy, corrupt contractors and villians, simple and hearty people who work on this project, strains of patriotism and goodwill, family intrigues etc.

And yes, some very good music and very good songs, for which we are thankful to SD Burman who composed the melodies and Shailendra, who put these verses to paper. Of the total seven songs listed for this film, five are already represented on this blog. Here is the sixth, delightful and lilting offering from this film.

The setting is a restaurant in the construction township. One can see Praveen Paul sitting at the cashier desk, apparently the owner or manager of this restaurant. Behind the bar, there is an attendant wearing a bowtie and a toothbrush moustache – he appears very familiar. Is he Majnu? I am not sure, and request other readers to help identify him, and a few others in this scene. Then the primary players. Nishi is the dancer who sings and performs this song. And Sunil Dutt, one of the customers at the restaurant, is the primary object of her attention. Besides, we have a host of other actors, some of whom are decidedly the villains or villian’s henchmen. One can see Shyam Kumar in check shirt, cap and a squint in the eye. The gentleman accompanying Shyam Kumar, once again seems very familiar, but I am not able to place a name to him.

Anyways. Enjoy this joyful, foot tapping song. The music by Sachin Da is ‘karnapriye’ – so pleasing to the ears. And the words by Shailendra, are superb. The intriguing and enchanting mix that he is able to make with his verses, is just too good as always. Just sample this half verse from the third antaraa.

tum bhi kuchh haaro pyaare
gori gori baahon ke haar ke liye

Always make you smile with his play on words. That is what Shailendra poetry is all about.

aankhen chaar hotay hotay
ho gayaa pyaar hotay hotay
teri bhi o, o, o
meri bhi o, o, o

These two eyes, mine
And two eyes, yours
Are now a foursome
Little by little
And love is blossoming (in the heart)
Little by little
In yours too
And in mine too

hum ne chhupaanaa chaaha, daaman bachaana chaaha
dil hi jab dil pe aayaa kya karey koi
ab to zamaana jaane, apna begaana jaane
duniya hai degi taane kyun darey koi

Tried hard to hide (my feelings)
Tried hard to stay away (from you)
But when heart is charmed
And is drawn (to you)
What then, to do
Now the world knows
Friends and strangers know
People will pass comments (in any case)
So why be afraid

jaano na jaano raja, maano na maano raja
hum ne kuchh bhi na chaaha aap ke siwaa
mujhko jo tum na miltey, ye nainaa kaise khilte
tum sainyyaan mere dil ke dard ki dawaa

Whether you know, or not
Whether you believe, or not
I never desired anyone except you
If you had not come into my life
Smiles would never have touched my eyes
O dear, you are the balm for the pain in my heart

do din ki hai jawaani, dariyaa ka behtaa paani
de do dil ki qurbaani pyaar ke liye
baittho na mann ko maare, tum bhi kuchh haaro pyaare
gori gori baahon ke haar ke liye

This youth, it will last but two days
Like the flowing waters of a river
O let us surrender our hearts for the sake of love
Do not sit away in despair
Come, gamble and lose
Something at least
To win the garland of my fair arms

(NOTE: the phrase “dariyaa ka behtaa paani” as a comparison to the youth is very symbolic. The flowing waters of a river are always exuberant and naughty, just like youth. And the flowing waters will never return, just like youth).
