Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Naadaan hai anjaan hai

Posted on: April 29, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

As I checked the ‘list of films – moviewise’ on this blog, my reaction was – O My God, this film is not yet represented here. Wow. Well not that something is amiss. There is a ton of films that are still to find their way to this blog. But the music is so wow, and I wondered how it has stayed away from this blog thus far. The film is full of both lilting and sentimental gems. And so I must write this post and have this film debut its presence here.

There is an age old saying that advises to look before one leaps. No matter how simple a thing may seem, this adage holds true. And no matter how many times one may have tried or done something, there is always a chance one may make a slip the next time. That is what happened with me today. 🙂 Usually, when I am selecting songs for a write up, I will do a diligent check on the list of songs already posted for two purposes. One to ensure that the song is not already on the blog, and secondly, to get some info about the already posted songs from the same film to add to the write up. And in this effort, I am usually diligent about spellings and name variations and try to look into the lists more closely than just the alphabetical matching.

But today, I slipped up, and big time. Preparing the write up for this song from ‘Bombay Ka Chor’, I did my normal search and found that the film was not yet represented on this blog. And hence went ahead and wrote the first paragraph accordingly, expressing surprise and other such emotions. After Atul ji saw the write up, he promptly wrote back to me (I am sure with a tongue in cheek smile 🙂 ) that the film was already on the blog, and is listed as ‘Bambai Ka Chor’. Gosh, I realized what mistake I had done. Feeling very much red in face, I am writing this pre-addendum to the write up, to put things in order. Atul ji informed that already six songs from this film are posted, and this one remains. And now the emotion of ‘O My God’ changed to ‘Thank You God’, at least the song I selected for posting is not already on the blog. But oh, well, read on.

A song as lilting as this one, the general expectation would be that it is performed by one of the mainline dancers like Helen, or Bela Bose or Lakshmi Chhaaya et al. But wait, this song is performed by the leading lady, Mala Sinha, trying to emulate the antics of the regular dance performers.

The film is Bombay Ka Chor from 1962. Having immortalized the ‘thugs’ of ‘Dilli’ in 1958, Kishore decided to make a statement about the ‘Chors’ of Bombay. The film is by SD Narang, one of the well known producer-directors in the industry, and this film is produced under the banner of New Oriental Pictures, Bombay. The leading actors in this film include Kishore Kumar, Mala Sinha, Amar, Mishra, SK Prem, Heeralal, Helen, Protima Devi, Nilofer, Moppet Raja, Honey Irani, Ram Mohan, Rajan Haksar, Uma Dutt, Rashid Khan, Daya Devi, Jagdish Raj, Radheyshyam, Haroon, Miraajkar etc. The melodious compositions are unmistakably Ravi, and words to these songs have been given by Rajendra Krishan. The singing voice, well no second guesses – yes, it is Asha Bhosle.

When I sit down to prepare these write ups, sometimes I regret the paucity of time with which almost all of us struggle. I have had the DVD of this film with me for more than a year, but have not yet got around to seeing it. Apparently, an action comedy, one can expect that since a young Kishore Kumar is in the leading role. I can comment no further on this film and request other readers to please provide some details about this film and the context of this song.

The song is a stage performance at a charity show. The stage setting is of a restaurant complete with musicians, dancers and people sitting at tables. On screen the dance is performed by Mala Sinha and a group of dancers. Can somebody please help to identify the main dance companion to Mala Sinha? And yes, there is Kishore Kumar, with big hairbrush moustache standing in the wings, and expressing himself as the song goes along. A brief view of the audience, and one can identify Amar sitting and watching the performance.

Gosh, what a melodious turn of the strings and rhythm. A type of song that will have you humming along with it, and tapping your fingernails in accompaniment to the rhythm – “Nadaan Hai. . .”. Enjoy this lovely ear catching melody from Ravi.

nadaan hai anjaan hai, yaar sharmaa gayaa
gori gori surat dekhi, aur paseenaa aa gayaa

(Ah, this new friend)
How unaware, inexperienced he is
And so coy and bashful
He breaks out in a sweat
Just seeing the beautiful faces

wo samjhe hai khilaadi, mein jaanu hai anaadi
der ki aankh milaane ki, ghabraa gayaa, ghabraa gayaa

He thinks he is a veteran
But I know he is just a novice
Just as our eyes met
He became confused and perplexed

aayaa hai di churaane, zaraa dekho to bahaane
chot zaraa si khaayee to, bal khaa gayaa, bal khaa gayaa

He thinks he is here to impress
And steal the hearts (of fair maidens)
Just listen to his pretexts and reasons
A little push (from me)
And he went all topsy turvy

ab chhodo ye sharmanaa, ye ghabranaa pachhtaanaa
ye dil waalon ki mehfil hai, jo aa gayaa so aa gayaa

O come now
Let this coyness be
Let got the regrets and apprehensions
This party is of young hearts in flutter
And whoever makes it here
Well let him be (and enjoy)

Sudhir ji / Atul ji,

If you see the HFGK,the above film-‘Bombay ka chor(Bambai ka chor),
has a total of 10 songs, out of which only six (6) songs were posted so far. That is the reason this film did not feature in my list of films, which I am currently processing for 1 or 2 songs short films,in the “Readers’ fermaish”.
The above song is the 7th song and still 3 more songs,as following, are due-
1. dekha kisi ne kuch aise
2. kaun aya ye mehfil mein
3. hai bahar e bagh duniya chand roz

Mala Sinha and dance? She could never or was not comfortable with dance, specially this kind of Part song. Whenever she had to perform, she tried to keep it to minimum. Like in this song, she did not dance, but as with the party/club song, dance was required, so here, they have used other dancer. If you remember, she has done a party song, gairon pe karam apnon pe sitam……aankhen-68 in which she is just singing the song and for the choreography, they have used two other dancers. In the same situation, Waheeda Rehman has danced solely in Prem Pujari, rangeela re tere rang me yun ranga hai mera man……… Of course WR is a trained classical dancer, MS was not (hope I am right). But for the song Kankariya maar ke jagaya in Himalay ki God Mein, MS has done a good job.
BTW, achha hua ki ye post kiye huye gaane mein she did not dance, otherwise, KK jo badi muchh laga ke kone mein khada tha, woh competition karne stage par aa jata. 😆 Aur mera dimaag ye soch nahin paa raha hai ki aisi situation mein kaun jeet paata- KK ya MS?

Well, the winner will have to be KK – his dancing, although unorthodox, is still much better controlled and coordinated.

Sudhirji,
You made the mistake of not finding this movie on the blog is just because of different spelling. But in past, I have send Atulji 2 songs which already were posted. Ab bolo ise kya kahoge?

Khyati ji

Yes, this has happened with me too.
And to tell you the truth, this has happened with Atul ji himself too.
😀 😀

This still happens. It happened a few times even in this month. After posting songs, I realised that these songs were posted long back. so I replaced the old write ups with write ups about some other songs. They were brand new writeups but they passed unnoticed.

Atulbhai,
aap to Sudhir ji aur mere se bhi aage nikal gaye. 🙂
But you do have a valid excuse for this over looked mistake, as you are doing so much for the blog. I can just imagine how much load you have. e.g.-
I send you the lyrics,
You confirm all the details – movie name (with spelling), year, artists, MD, Lyricist,
You search the info regarding the movie for the write up
You update that song for the “some stats”, contributor’s profile, song category,
Then reply to all the comments
These are just few things that I can think of.
Aur agar maine gaane ke saath write up bhej diya to………

Thanks for all the hard work you are doing to give all us the PLEASURE through the TREASURE of these “gems”.
