Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Is there another song for selling newspapers? I cannot off hand recall one. This one I do remember – film ‘Dooriyaan’, year is 1979, and this film I remember seeing on the big screen.

The film is about relationship between a married couple where both partners are working full time jobs. In the seventies, the prevalence of education and worsening economic realities both contributed to families with two bread winners, especially in urban centers. And the consequences of that were starting to become apparent. Break up in joint family system, rise of nuclear family concept, the plight of the latch key children (children returning from school would unlock the door and enter an empty home), transitioning family and matrimonial values, financial dependence getting redefined et al. A plethora of issues appeared on the scene, adding to the complexity of an already complicated life in the metro cities.

The film industry was not far behind and these themes found their way into the mainstream cinema, and many films appeared on the screen that dealt with these issues. ‘Dooriyaan’ is a tale of one such couple. Both spouses are successful and rising in their careers, and the complete equation of expectations changes. For there is a child to take care. And the ownership of home and household duties begins to drift. Animosities, suspicions and finger pointing starts. And the relationship takes a turn for the worse. The couple fight, they separate, they argue about the child – and none of the spouse is prepared to adjust. The ending of the film was not too satisfactory – appeared to be abrupt and halfway solution. Or maybe that is the best that could be worked out in real life too.

Anyways, we are here to discuss this fun song that one finds unexpectedly in such an expectedly serious film. ‘Dooriyaan’ is a production from the banner of Climb Films, Bombay, and is directed by Bhimsen. The star cast is impressive, in that it includes Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Priyadarshini, Shriram Lagoo, Baby Geeta, Sudha Chopra, Sulbha Deshpande, Arvind Deshpande, Lalita Kohli, Nitin Sethi, Dutta Bhatt, Achyut Poddar, Kiran Seth etc. And besides these, there are three guest artists that make an appearance especially to perform this song only. Yes, I am referring to Jalal Agha, Mohan Choti, and Mushtaq Merchant. The lyrics of this film are penned by the famous poet Sudarshan Faakkir. Sudharshan is known more for his ghazals that have been rendered off screen, by many ghazal singers. Music is by Jaidev, and it is really endearing. The film has 4 songs. This is the second song from this film that appears on this blog. There are two more, wonderful songs that should reach here soon – a romantic duet, and a fun song for children.

This song is sung by Manna Dey. And he sings for all the three performers. But wait, that is not all. There are dialogues in between that are in very familiar voices, and I will make an attempt to identify them. As you listen, there is a cameo within a cameo by Jalal Agha. I am not certain, but it appears that the dialogues spoken by the ‘neta ji’ and ‘boodhaa aadmi’ are rendered by Manna Dey himself. The next cameo is the man in white kurta pajama, who talks about ‘confusionism’ with Mohan Choti. I suspect the voice behind that person to be TP Jain. TP Jain was a TV artist in Delhi Doordarshan and later a character actor in Bombay, in the 1970s. (Folks may recall him as the Bade Babu at the office in the film ‘Gharonda’). His voice is just this type, nasal and guttural. Then the news item about the a man eloping with his brother’s saali. In that clearly the voice behind the dialogues of Uttam Kumar is Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and the Sharmila of course is speaking for herself. These are my guesses, and would request other readers to please confirm or comment on it.

Enjoy this fun sales pitch song. The Hindi film song never fails to suprise with all its varieties and all the types of situations that have been conceived, as songs. Truly amazing.
