Chaahe kitna mujhe tum bulaaoge

I was in Kohima (Nagaland) during the first week of December last year to see the week long annual Hornbill Festival. The festival showcases the rich tribal traditions and culture of Nagaland including folk dances, music, sports etc. One day of the festival was reserved for the folk dancers and musicians of all the north-eastern states. My main interest was photography during the festival events and also capturing the tribal village life in the real sense by visiting a nearby Naga village. But some of the dances and musical performances became so rhythmic and foot tapping that I was completely engrossed watching them and in the process I missed taking pictures of some of those events. Surely, some of the dance and musical performances would have been a source of inspiration for Bollywood music directors and choreographers. I also observed that the younger generation In Kohima was very much into music. There are many rock music bands in Kohima. Even in a tribal village, it was a common sight to see young boys and girls moving with guitars.

During the festival, a group of Manipuri dancers danced while simultaneously playing their longish Manipuri dholaks which they call ‘Pungi’. I was reminded of some old Hindi film songs using similar dholak beats. Offhand I was not able to remember any of such songs though I had some inkling that one of the songs may have been from S D Burman’s compositions. Later on, I noticed on my visit to Agartala that the Manipuri dholaks were also used while singing devotional songs in the temples. Since S D Burman hailed from erstwhile Tripura ( a part of which had gone to East Pakistan, now Bangla Desh), the songs may have been composed by him. After my return from the trip, I got a few of those songs like ‘chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaaoge’ from ‘Armaan (1953)’, ‘aanmilo aan milo shyaam saanware’ in ‘Devdas’ (1955) and ‘ aaj sajan mohe ang lagaalo’ from ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) but not before doing some home work to locate these songs.

But the song which was a surprise find for me was ‘chaahe kitna mujhe tum bulaaoge’ from ARMAAN (1953) sung by Asha Bhonsle. This song is not devotional but the dholak rhythm does give that impression. Probably S D Burman used Manipuri dholak (Pungi) to get a distinct sound. Sahir Ludhianvi’s verses in the song such as ‘dhadakonon ko naa yoon gudgudaao ji’ are untypical of him. The simple lyrics, the simple musical composition and Asha’s sweet voice makes this song very catchy.

There is also Asha-Talat version of this song with different lyrics which is, however, more typical of Sahir Ludhianvi. The song is in a slow tempo creating a poignant mood. While Asha Bhonsle repeats the mukhda of the song, the antaras are sung by Talat Mehmood.

ARMAAN (1953) was produced and directed by Fali Mistry. The star cast included Dev Anand, Madhubala, Shakila, K N Singh,Gajanan Jagirdar, Murad, Meenakshi etc. Nothing much is known about the story line and the fate of this film at the box office but it has some great songs such as ‘ye hansi ye kushi’, ‘jadhubariye fizaanye’, beraham teri wafaaon ko mitha dete’, ‘jab duniya badaly hai’,‘krodh kapat ke andhiyaare mein’ in addition to the song under discussion. Only audio clips of the songs of this film are available.

With this song, the film ‘Armaan’(1953) makes its debut in the blog.

chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi
o chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

o o o
o o o o
o o o
o o o

tum ho pardesi kyaa jaane kis din
chhod jaao mujhe tum akeli
jis kaa anjaam ho aahen bharnaa
ham na boojhenge aisi paheli
dil kaa darwaazaa naa khatkhataao ji
nahin boloongi nahin boloongi
o chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

o o o
o o o
tum ne meri nazar mein samaake
o o o
o o o o
tum ne meri nazar mein samaake
meri raaton ki nindiyaa churaa li
dekhte dekhte aarzoo ne
ek basti anokhi basaa li
meri duniyaa pe aise naa chhaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi
chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

o o o
o o o o
o o o
o o o
main hoon alhad sajan
main naa jaanoo
o o o
o o o o
main hoon alhad sajan
main naa jaanoo
ye lagaane nibhaane ki rasmein
kyaa khabar kaise chupke hi chupke
kar liyaa tumne dil apne bas mein
dhadkanon ko naa yoon gudgudaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi
o chaahe kitnaa
o chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaao ji
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaaoge
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi
chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaaoge
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

bol na bol ae jaanewaale
sun to le deewaanon ki
ab nahin dekhi jaati hamse
ye haalat armaanon ki
bol na bol ae jaanewaale

husn ke khilte phool hameshaa
bedardon ke haath bikey
husn ke khilte phool hameshaa
bedardon ke haath bikey
aur chaahat ke matwaalon ko
dhool mili veeraanon ki

chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaaoge
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

bol na bol ae jaanewaale
dil ke naazuk jazbon par bhi
raaj hai sone chaandi kaa
dil ke naazuk jazbon par bhi
raaj hai sone chaandi kaa
ye duniyaa kyaa keemat degi
taazaadil insaanon ki

chaahe kitnaa mujhe tum bulaaoge
nahin boloongi
nahin boloongi

bol na bol ae jaanewaale
sun to le deewaanon ki
ab nahin dekhi jaati hamse
ye haalat armaanon ki
bol na bol ae jaanewaale
