Laali laali doliyaa mein laali re dulhaniyaa

“Teesri Kasam” (1966) was a movie which was adapted from Phanishwar Nath “Renu”‘s Hindi novel called “Maare Gaye Gulfaam”. I have neither seen the movie nor read the novel, but Santosh Ojha, a contributor to this blog has given a nice summary of this novel in his blog . Reading this summary, I realised what a moving tale this novel and this movie was. Now I can understand why Shailendra was so heartbroken on finding his dream project failing at the box office. The fact that Indian movie audience were not mature enough and sensitive enough to appreciate a movie like this was quite unfortunate indeed.
I have discussed as many as six songs from “Teesri Kasam” (1966) but it seems that a few songs from this movie are yet to be covered.
Here is another song from “Teesri Kasam” (1966). Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song, describes it as a rare song, which comes as a surprise to me. This song was a reasonably well known song during 1970s, as far as I can tell. Perhaps this song has become forgotten with time.
Video of this song is available, and this song of about three minutes long is what most music lovers may be familiar with. But Prakashchandra informs me that the song has an additional stanza too.
Here is this song from “Teesri Kasam” (1966). The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. The picturisation shows Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman passing through a village on a bullock cartand the village kids following the bullock cart while singing this song. One of the girls among the kids lip sync in Asha Bhonsle’s voice while other kids lip sync in chorus. I have found out that the young girl lip synv=cing this song was the daughter of Shailendra. I am not aware of her name and I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us her name.
Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
I have provided the video link containing the partial song. I have also provided an audio link containing the full song.

Yes Atul-ji, the circumstances leading to their sad deaths were not just the failing of their movies. Guru Dutt’s personal life was in a tailspin. We needn’t go into the details here. By the way, ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’ released in 1959.
And, Atul-ji, thanks a lot for the info about Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’.

I wonder what so special about number three-
Teen Deviyaan,
Teesri Kasam
Teen Batti Chaar Raasta
Teen Bahuraaniyan
Teesri Manzil
Teesra Kaun
Teen Bhai
Teen Sardaar
Arunji, can you complete the list? Just curious how many more movies are there with the unsolved mystery of title related to number three.
BTW, I have seen three movies from this list.

If you’re familiar with the story of ‘Teesri kasam’, you will notice the sad irony in this sweet, innocent song sung by some schoolkids in a village as they follow the bullock cart carrying Waheeda Rehman. She is a ‘nautanki’ dancer of dubious virtue but the song goes ‘Laali laali doliya me laali re dulhaniya’. The expressions fleeting across her face are pure classic! Mirth, delight and embarrassment with a pinch of guilt too.
‘Teesri Kasam’ has something in common with ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’. Both fared disastrously at the box office. Today, decades later, they’re extremely popular all over the country. And sadly, they killed oof their creators! Guru Dutt took his own life after the debacle of ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’ while Shailendra died of a broken heart at the box office failure of his dear ‘Teessri Kasam’. Did you know that the name of the novel was ‘Maare gaye gulfam’?

Thanks for pointing out the parallels between Guru Dutt and Shailendra’s end. Though one must say that in case of Guru Dutt the matter was more complicated than just the failure of his movie. He in fact died only in early 1960s,while “Kaaghaz Ke Phool was a movie of 1950s. Facts like problems in his personal lives etc contributed considerably.
In case of Shailendra, failure of this movie quickly took its toll on Shailendra and that was the beginning of the end for Raj Kapoor’s musical team.
The novel “Maare Gaye Gulfaam” was written by Phanishwar Nath “Renu”, if I remember correctly. He was a well known Hindi author during those days.
