Jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil

“Patanga”(1971), not to be confused with the blockbuster “Patanga”(1949), was produced by R S Sharma aand Kedar Kapoor. Kedar Kapoor was the director of this movie as well. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Vimmi, Rajendranath, Sajjan, Leela Misra, Wasti, Jagdish Raaj, Ram Mohan, Shekhar Purohit, Laxmi Chhaya, Ajit, Zeb Rehman, Praveen Paul, Jayshree T.
With lead actors like the above, it is no wonder that this movie failed to come anywhere close to the success of its namesake movie of 1949. In fact I was not even aware of this movie till recently, even though the movie was released during my time.
Here is a song from this movie which is just as unknown to me as the movie itself. This song is a piano song. It is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shashi Kapoor. Neeraj is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Song-Jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil (Patanga)(1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics(Provided by nahm)
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jaise koyi bachpan ki kahaani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jaise koyi bachpan ki kahaani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
parda uttha de husn ki zidd hai
parda giraa de ishq ki zidd hai
parda uttha de husn ki zidd hai
parda giraa de ishq ki zidd hai
dil hai hamaara aisa diyaa jo
jal bhi na paaye
bujh bhi na paaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jaise koyi bachpan ki kahaani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
hasti mitaa de khud ko bhula de
apna safeena aap duba de
hasti mitaa de khud ko bhula de
apna safeena aap duba de
dhoond kinaara wo ke jahaan par
chain to aaye hosh na aaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jaise koyi bachpan ki kahaani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
honth pe naghma aankh mein paani
ek haqeeqat ek kahaani
honth pe naghma aankh mein paani
ek haqeeqat ek kahaani
khushi ka daaman gham ka kafan hai
donon baraabar neend jo aaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subhaa na aaye
jaise koyi bachpan ki kahaani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil

Nahm ji,
I am writing again, to talk a bit more about this song. When I played it again just now, after such a long gap, it all came back to me, as to why this song is so special, and why its memory just stays with you. It is the words of Neeraj, which are simply sublime.
“dhoond kinaara aisa jahaan par
chain to aaye, hosh na aaye”
or
“khushi ka daaman gham ka kafan
hain donon baraabar, neend jo aaye”
The lines are so deep and so impactful, its lovely.
Thanks once again for the reminder. 🙂

This song reminds me of SJ’s Aaya na hunko pyaar jatana pyaar kabhi se tujhe karte hain…….of Pehchaan – 70 by Mukheshji & Sumanji.

An interesting about this film, Vimi was not paid her dues and the producer wanted to film the title song which was the major work left of Vimi. She, therefore, refused to come on the sets which resulted in heavy losses to the producers who were already short of funds. They deceided to film the title song as a dream sequence and on a different artist, probably Laxmi Chhaya. This resulted in the film doing badly and of course, Vimi’s career, which any case was never there, nose-dived.
