“Alibaba”(1940) must be one of the earliest (if not the earliest) Hindi movie based on the well known Arabian nights tale of Alibaba and the forty thieves. This movie had Surendranath, Wahidanbai, Sadra Akhtar, Ghulam Mohammad etc in it. It was produced by Sagar and directed by Mehboob.
Here is a duet song from “Alibaba”(1940). It is sung by Wahidanbai and Surendranath. Only the audio of this song is available , but it is obvious from the star cast that the song was picturised on themselves.
Safdar “Aah” Sitapuri is the lyricist. Music was composed by Anil Biswas.

Thanks for posting this song,sung by Waheedan Bai-mother of actress Nimmi and sister of another singer actress Jyoti,who married Durrani later.
Waheedan Bai was born in 1913.She was from a professional singer family(read tawaif) of Agra.Nimmi was born in 1933 and after that Waheedan bai came to Bombay to act/sing in films.her rare photograph is posted on my Fb page few days back.
ALIBABA -1940 was a Sagar Film Co. presentation.It was directed by none other than Mehboob Khan and MD was Anil Biswas.
Although the story is same as we all have read in our childhood,taking cinematic liberty the producers made some changes.
Addition of Zabba-the slave Girl who works at Alibaba’s brother Cassim’s house and is a spy of Abu Hassan-the chief of 40 thieves and making Marjina a slave girl of Cassim(instead of Alibaba in the original story) who is in love with Alibaba’s son are some changes.
I am not repeating the story-too well known-here,but this film depicted a slightly different version than the original Arabian Nights story.
Surendra and Waheedan Bai had played the roles of Alibaba’s son and Marjina respectively in this film.Alibaba’s role was done by Gulam mohd. and Abu Hasan was Jagdish Koopal.
This film was produced in Punjabi language also as ‘Alibaba’ only.

An elder sister of Wahidan was singer Jyoti (Aurat, ’40) wife of GM Durani.
