Directed by M.L. Anand, Bewefa (1952) was a Raj Kapoor-Nargis-Ashok Kumar love triangle. Both versions of its iconic song “Dil matwaalaa laakh sambhaalaa” rendered separately by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar are already on this blog. Video clips of its most others numbers too are on YouTube. But the video clip of a superlative Lata number Badnaseebi kaa gilaa ai dil-e-naashaad na kar has gone missing. I am not sure if this number was only recorded but not included in the movie itself. But if it was shot, it would be reasonable to assume that it was on Nargis herself exhorting herself to desist lamenting her ill-fate.
This poignantly sweet Lata number, penned by Sarshar Sailani was, like the other Bewafa numbers, also tuned by A.R. Qureshi. A.R. Qureshi later came to greater fame as tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Khan (the late father of the present day tabla-nawaaz Ustad Zakir Hussain) and was a frequent accompanist of the sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar in the latter’s hey-days in the 1960s and 70s.
