Ham par jaadoo daal gaye ho julmi

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

July 17th is the birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar ( 17/07/1919 – 29/05/2007), one of the forgotten music directors of the Hindi film industry. On his last death anniversary, I had written an article on him for this blog. So I would skip his profile. Snehal Bhatkar was a talented music director who, like many lesser known music directors, lost in the rigmarole of the Hindi film industry.

During his filmy career spanning over two decades, he composed music for only 16 films, most of which were for the films produced/directed by his mentor, Kidar Sharma. Some of his compositions were unusual in a sense that they did not conform to the usual musical notes. Examples : aapne huzoor mujhe kyaa se kyaa banaa diyaa, farishton ki nagri mein main aa gayaa hoon, wo dekho dekh rahaa thhaa papeehaa.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar, I have selected a rare and a melodious song ‘ham par jaadu daal gaye ho julmi’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the film GUNAAH (1953). This song has lovely lyrics written by Kidar Sharma. The film was produced under the banner of Ambitious Pictures and directed by Kidar Sharma. Star cast included Geeta Bali, Jagdev, Vijaylaxmi, A S Gyani, Pesi Patel, Pratima Devi, Kumari Naaz, Tuntun, Jankidas. Since the film flopped miserably at the box office, its songs were lost in the milieu. The musical interlude gives an impression of a tumri based light classical song. This song once again reinforces the view that Lata’s voice in early 50s had a charm of its own. One song from the film has already been discussed in the blog. Only the audio clip is available of this song and my guess is that it is picturised on Geeta Bali.

Song-Ham par jaadoo daal gaye ho julmi (Gunaah)(1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Snehal Bhatkar

Lyrics

ham par jaadoo daal gaye ho julmi
teer karejaava pe maar gaye ho julmi
nain raseele
nain raseele julmi nain

dorey daal ke kas lete hain
en en en
dorey daal ke kas lete hain
hans hansna bhi ye das lete hain
sakhi kaali nain ke waar gaye ho julmi
teer karajaava pe maar gaye ho julmi
nain raseele
nain raseele julmi nain

mast nazariyaa se zehar pilaayaa
aa aa aa
mast nazariyaa se zehar pilaayaa
jee apnaa tumne bahlaayaa
par ham jeete sarkaar gaye ho julmi
teer karajaava pe maar gaye ho julmi
nain raseele
nain raseele julmi nain

tumne zaraa si jhalak dikhaayi
ee ee
tumne zaraa si jhalak dikhaayi
bhool gaye ham sab chaturaayi
aji tum jeete ham haar gaye ho julmi
teer karajaava pe maar gaye ho julmi
nain raseele
nain raseele julmi nain
o o o
ham par jaadoo daal gaye ho julmi
teer karejaava pe maar gaye ho julmi
nain raseele
nain raseele julmi nain

Kamathji, I could not agree more to your statement about Lataji’s voice in 50’s. It was better voice with more range & may be emotion than contemporary singers till 80s or so, but IMHO the special quality, something which can not be described was lost when she started singing in rather higher pitch, may be courtsey SJ and others!

Thanks. I got the words ‘rasik raas’ now. I struggled to get that appropriate words but failed.
