“Shehnaayi” (1947) was a Filmistan Production movie. It was directed by P L Santoshi. The movie had Nasir Khan, Rehana, Indumati, Mumtaz Ali, Dulari, V H Desai, Leela Mishra, Kumkum etc in it.
The movie was full of new and innovative kinds of songs. A few of them are very well known, viz Aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday and Maar kataari mar jaana .
But even the “lesser known” songs from this movie are superb songs in their own rights.
Here is a song from “Shehnaayi” (1947) that I heard (and watched) for the first time only just now. What a delightful and original song it must have been at that time.
This song is sung by Binapani Mukherji, Meena Kapoor and chorus. It is picturised as a panghat song on four ladies. I can identify the lady lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice as Rehana. I am unable to identify the other lady doing the bulk of lip syncing. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her as well as the other two.
Vidur Sury, a regular of the site mentions that the song has the voice of Mohantara Talpade as well.

There is one word towards the end of the song where I have got stuck and put ? there . I request our knowledgeable readers with keener ears to tell us what word it could be.

Atul Ji, please note that the third stanza, ‘Ho.. Raja Ki Talaiyya Mein Meetha Meetha Paani’ is sung by Mohantara Talpade Ji, another very famous singer from mid to late 1940s. The film tape is not of great quality and audio is not so good, so no wonder you may not have noticed three voices instead of two. The audio (recorded) version is much clearer, all voices recognises. Thanks a lot for sharing lyrics, one of my favourites too. All singers then had such distinct voices 🙂
