“Shehnaayi” (1947) was an amazing movie with extremely innovative and original kind of songs. We are fortunate that a print of this movie still exists. As can be seen from youtube, this print survived thanks to some private collector in Pakistan from where it was uploaded on YT. Now all the songs of this movie are available on YT.
But I notice that most people have not gone into the depth of these songs and have taken things for granted as far as the credits of these songs are concerned.
Take this song “Aji tirchhi topi waalon se haan backhe rehna ji” from “Shehnaayi” (1947). The credits at YT and elsewhere mention that this song is sung by Shamshad Begam and C Ramchandra and that is all. This information then duly gets circulated all over the internet without any cross checking.
when I heard this song, I found that the song has several voices in addition to what has been mentioned. I wonder what the HFGK mentions about this song. I feel that this song has at least four major voices in addition to chorus of different types. And I can detect the unmistakable voice of Rafi too in this song.
In 1947, Rafi was a struggling singer, and any singing assignments that he could get were like gold dust for him. I wonder how the fact that he sang in a song is “Shehnaayi” (1947) has escaped the attention of music lovers.
I request our knowledgeable readers to listen to this and help identify the various voices. I in fact feel that there are not one but two female voices in this song. I feel that the voice of Amirbai Karnataki too is there in the song.
When it comes to the picturisation, this song is picturised as a stage song where we find a cross dressing Dulari lip syncing in the female voice and the cross dressing Mumtaz Ali lip syncing in C Ramchandra’s voice. The harmonium player called V H Desai, who speaks a few words (in his own voice ?) and later on also lip syncs in Rafi’s voice.
The more I think about this song, the more I realise that this song deserves to be investigated in depth. There is more to it than what has been known about this song till now.

Atul ji,
This is song is not featuring in my excel sheet of Rafi songs. The chances are that Geet kosh also has no record of Mohammed Rafi being one of singers of this song.

No one seems to have this fact in their records but Rafi’s voice is clearly there in this song.

True. It is another great find. This is second song of Rafi that we have found so far, to add to the songs. What was that song which was a Rafi solo from 1947 ? I am trying to see this page to find that song :
But something is wrong with this page. List of song music directorwise is opening, when clicked.

The song, the music and style reminds me of “Bhavai” during navratri festival… a folk drama from Gujarat, In bhavai, where male actor portrayed himself as a female.
In todays version of this song will be very similar to”sanedo”.
