Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Tumse hi roshan hai raat meri

Posted on: September 18, 2012

Today (18 september) is the birthday of Shabana Azmi. Daughter of Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Azmi, Shabana Azmi made her debut in arts movies in early 1970s. after a few years, she made it to the mainstream movies. She was a misfit in the usual leading lady kind of singing dancing roles, but she was good in roles that required some real acting. and she got roles that exploited her acting ability.

The song under discussion is from “Lorie” (1984). The movie was a New Wave Production. It was produced by Sagar Sarhadi and directed by Vijay Talwar. The movie had Shabana Azmi, Farooue Sheikh, Kiran Vairale, Madan Puri, Shaukat Kaifi Azmi, Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, Swaroop Sampat, Rohini Hattangadi, B.L.Chopra, Yunus Parwaiz, Javed Khan, Vinod Sharma, Master Imran, Sulabha Deshpande, Anjan Srivastav,Vikas Anand, Sulbha Arya, Masood Aktar etc in it.

Though this movie is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, but the movie flopped big time and as such not much information is available about this movie. Fortunately, Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song is well versed with the story of this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:-

This film revolves around Shabana Azmi who marries Farooque Sheikh(against her rich father`s wish), who is a poor man and a small garage owner. During her pregnancy, she meets with an accident, because of that she looses the chance to become pregnant again. Shabana becomes obsessive about having her own child. In that obsession she brings a child(who got separated from its family) of a poor family of Madan Puri and Sahukat Kaifi Azmi. She refuses to handover that child to police station and treats that boy as her own child. Farooque Sheikh becomes helpless. Shabana Azmi blames her father’s baddua for her childlessness. This film, I think is based on some real life incident.

The film is not pretensious and devoid of any Masala ingredients, that`s why it didn`t got its due. This film sank without trace. Imagine the state of its beautiful musical compositions of KHAIYYAMji.

Here is this song from “Lorie” (1984). It is a duet which is sung by Talat Aziz and Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised on Farooque Sheikh and Shabana Azmi. Bashar Nawaz is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.

Song-Tumhi se roshan hai raat meri (Lorie)(1984) Singers-Talat Aziz, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Bashar Nawaz, MD-Khaiyyam
Talat Aziz + Asha Bhonsle

Lyrics (Provided by Prakashchandra)

tumhi se roshan hai raat meri
tumhi se roshan hai raat meri
tumhi se har din huaa sunehraa
utthe jahaan bhi nazar tumhari
utthe jahaan bhi nazar tumhaari
ho zindagi kaa wahin saveraa

saje the kab se tumhaare sapne
meri nigaahon ke darpanon mein

sulagti rehti thi dheemi dheemi
ye aag madmaathe saawanon mein
sukoon hai jab se gesuooun ki
sukoon hai jab se gesuooun ki
haseen chhaaon mein hai basseraa
utthe jahan bhi nazar tumhaari
ho zindagi kaa wahin saveraa

ye kaise jaadoo jagaa diye hain
mere khayalon ke aanganon mein
sunoon sadaayein tumhaare dil ki
main apne seene ki dhadkanon mein
jidhar bhi jaaoon hai saath jaise
jidhar bhi jaaon hai saath jaise
tumhaari baahon ka narm gheraa

tumhi se roshan hai raat meri
tumhi se har din hua sunehraa

nayaa nahin hai ye dil ka mausam
nayee nahin chaahatein hamaari

mile nahin the magar hameshaa
nigaah mein thi chaveetumhaari
thi mere dil mein tumhaari dhadkan
thi mere dil mein tumhaari dhadkan
tumhaare hothon pe naam meraa

tumhi se roshan hai raat meri
tumhi se har din huaa sunehraa
utthe jahaan bhi nazar tumhaari
ho zindagi kaa wahin saveraa

ho zindagi kaa wahin saveraa,
ho zindagi kaa wahin savera

write up mainmale singer is given as Talat Mehmood. corrections please Atulji

the voice doesn’t belong to Talatsaab.

it cud be Talat Aziz as written in the footnote

on listening again it sounds like Suresh Wadkar

I’m not much familiar with Aziz voice. I have heard here and there some of his songs…w/o ever making the repetitions. very much same goes with Suresh Wadkar.

It is Talat Aziz,
who also sang for Khayyam in Umrao jaan(Zindagi jab bhi tere bazm mein laati hai hamein),Bazaar(Phir chidi raat baat phoolon ki),
Daddy(-Aainaa mujhe meri pehli si soorat maange-Rajesh Roshan),
Gumrah(1993-Sridevi,Sanjay dutt-Laxmikant Pyarelal),
Shararat(2002-Abhishek bachchan starrer-music by Babloo chakravarthy)
Yatra(Nana Patekar,Rekha,Deepti Naval-Gautam Ghose-for khayyam again-2006)

Also Mahesh Bhatt made a film titled Dhun(1991)with Talat Aziz in the lead role alongwith Sangeeta Bijlani, Which has got very good musical compositions by Laxmikant pyarelal(with Anand Bakshi and Talat Aziz as Playback singer cum Hero) I don`t know what happened to that movie, but the music for that movie was released through HMV(Popular song-“Prem dhun laagi”

If I am not wrong,a few days back, I happened to see him dancing in T.V.Popular show Jhalak diklaa jaa
