Ye chaand to mridang hai

Music lovers who search in YT often tend to come across some unheard of songs sometimes which sound like gems. The song is one such unsung unheard gem.
This song is from an obscure movie and it has an unlikely title viz. “Sri Krishna Anjun Yudhh”(1971). This movie was a B grade mythological movie. It was a Singhania Production movie. It was directed by Babubhaai Mistri. The movie had Abhi Bhattacharya, Mahipal, Jayshree Gadkar, Jayshree T, Helen, Jeevan, Tabassum, Shekhar Purohit, Madhumati, Polson etc in it.
This song was discovered a few weeks ago by Ava Suri, I think and when I heard this song for the first time I realised that it was something special and magical.
This fantastic song is a romantic duet which is sung by Rafi and Shyama Hemmadi. Shyama Hemmadi, later Shyama Chittar, is the younger sister of Suman Kalyanpur. Like Suman Kalyanpuri, Shyama Hemmadi’s voice too sounds like Lata, never a good idea for her singing career. 🙂 No wonder she has sung very few songs and all her songs are extremely obscure.
But what a song ! This song is picturised as a romantic song on a boat on Abhi Bhattacharya and Jayshree Gadkar. From the little mythology that I know (I knew a lot more during my younger “Chandamama” reading days), I guess that they play Arjun and Krishna’s sister (forgot her name) respectively.
When I heard this song, I decided that I would discuss this song as a special song in the blog. This occasion is a special occasion for the blog. This song marks yet another century for the blog. Yes, it is the 6700th song for the blog. And I think that this rare and obscure song from an unheard of this is just the song for the occasion.
Here is this fantastic song which is largely a creation of lesser known artists. Apart from Rafi, others involved in the creation of this song are lesser known artists for most music lovers.
Lyrics are by Pt Madhur. Music is composed by Nandu Pyaare.
This song in fact reminded me of the music of another Babubhai Mistry movie of the previous decade, viz. “Parasmani”(1963). That movie had music by then unknown music directors called Laxmikant Pyarelal. I half guessed that this Pyaare could well be Pyarelal of LP, but no, that is not the case. Nandu and Pyaare were different and they failed to make it big in Hindi movies.
So here is this forgotten gem from ” Sri Krishna Arjun Yudhh” (1971) as the 6700th song of the blog.
As always, I thank all the visitors, contributors and well wishers of this blog for their continued support and encouragement. May this musical bandwagon continue to roll on and on.

Lyrics
ho o o o o
ho o o o o
ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
ye kaun gaa raha hai
ye kaun gaa raha hai
mere man mein dheere dheere
ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
bajta sitaar pal pal
mijraab hai ye kis ka
aa aa
aa aa aa
in pyaar ke suron mein
jawaab hai ye kis ka
jawaab hai ye kis ka
is jhoomti kavita mein
kisne hain jade heere
ye kaun gaa raha hai
mere man mein dheere dheere
ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
ae maanjhi udhar mat chal
us oar hai sawera
o o
o o
jeewan mein rahe hardam
ye aaj ka andhera
ye aaj ka andhera
madira ye milan ki hai
ye chaahe jitni pee re
ye kaun gaa raha hai
mere man mein dheere dheere
Ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
lehren bhi kinaare se
milne ko tarastin hain
aa aa
aa aa aa aaa
miltin hain bichhadti hain
hatatin hain phir badhtin hain
hatatin hain phir badhtin hain
dariyaa mein boond bankar
jab tak tu chaahe jee re
ye kaun gaa raha hai
mere man mein dheere dheere
ye chaand to mridang hai
taare hain manjeere
ye kaun gaa raha hai

I associate Shama Chittaara`s voice with Shor- philosophical song “Jeevan chalne ka naam, chalte raho subah-o-shaam”(with Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor).
I didn`t know she was related to Suman Kalyanpur. Thanks for the information.
Thanks Atul ji and Ava ji for the rare discovery.
