When one talked of a movie called “Sargam” in my younger days, the only movie of this name that I was aware of was the Rishi Kapoor Jayaprada movie of 1980. Later I came to know that a movie of the same title was released in 1950 too which was a Filmistan production. “Sargam” (1950) was directed by P L Santoshi. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. L. Puri, Sudesh etc in it.
When I dig deep into the songs of “Sargam” (1950), the more I realise that “Sargam” (1950) was a musical blockbuster of mind boggling proportions. People today have forgotten this movie and the value and quality of its song may not have been fully appreciated even during its time.
C Ramchandra , the music director of this movie has created gems after gems in this movie, and that too of several genre.
I have discussed as many as seven songs from this movie. Here is the eight song from this movie. I heard (and watched) this song for the first time only just now. What a fantastic song it is.
This song is sung by Lata and a female voice that I do not find credited. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify this unknown voice. The song is picturised as a musical performance on stage by Rehana (performing in Lata’s voice) and another lady (performing in the uncredited female voice) and others (singing in chorus).
PS-Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, informs that the other voice is that of Saraswati Rane.

If I am not mistaken,she should be Chandabai.

Rehana really lead PL to the garden path. He was infatuated, enamored, besotted, bewitched, obsessed, captivated, enraptured and what have you. With her he painted the town red. He took her to Sun & Sand Hotel daily where a meal would cost Rs 3.00 in 40s and early 50s but he used to tip Rs 100 to the salaam bharnewale ko at the gate.
He got her a spacious flat at Churchgate (la Om Prakash did for Anita Guha later).
Generally the ornaments worn by the heroines were imitations, but she insisted to have them real; she got her way. Immediately after the shooting she made herself rare for weeks on end. When she was back she gratuitously replied that she had been to her native place and as her mother like the jewelry she gave it to her. PL was doomed as his other films were not doing so well. Then he remembered about the flat; he went there but she did not opened the door. He lay there for the whole night; to no avail….. Sach kehate hai duniwale ladikiyo se na ankhe ladhana

Rajkumar also like a true son of his father carried on the family tradition; went overboard with Meenaxi Sheshadri, but being a gentlelady she did kept a distance from him; RK ko izzat ka kachra banne se bacha liya.

Atul ji,
The other voice in this song is that of SARASWATI RANE,the famous singer of yore.
The info and synopsis of this film Sargam was given on 20th march 2012.
Now only 2 songs are remaining and they are-
1.Main hoon Alladin,mere paas hai chirag-e-deen-Lata,Rafi,Chitalkar and chorus.
2.ya vi vi sikaiya,ho raat milan ki,dil hai pyasa-Lata,Chitalkar and chorus.
