Lesser known singers- Singer 9 (Utpala Sen)

BANGLA is a very sweet language. Many times I wonder whether Bengali sweets are sweeter or the Bangla language. I have never tried to answer this question myself, because I liked both.
During my working days I was a regular visitor to Bengal, almost every month. I have travelled in the deep interiors of Bengal and loved its natural beauty- I only mean the beauty of its Nature. 🙂 I saw the similarity in Konkan in the Western Ghats and Kerala, which could match site for site.
During those of my days, I had picked up a little- actually too little to even see clearly-Bangla language. In one of my Calcutta visits one day, I saw a big hoarding advertising ” The New Theatre Utsav “.
Tempted by this I postponed my Delhi visit and saw many old and very old Hindi and Bangla films- not forgetting to make my notes in the Diary. I heard many singers in Bengal. I heard Utpala Sen,whose voice ,I felt, was similar to Geeta Dutt. May be, ALL Bengalees sing in the same tone ,Pitch and volume……I do not know.
Throughout the 40s- from 1940 to 1950-there was almost an exodus of artists from Bengal to Bombay. There were 2 reasons….
1. One by one, the so far famous production studios in Calcutta were closing or slowing down. Madon Theatres had already shut the shop in late 30s. This was due to world war II. Thus job/work opportunities had shrunk tremendously.
2. With the rumours of partition, many trainloads and truckloads of Hindus were coming to West Bengal from the Eastern Bengal and life was difficult and suffocating.
Many actors, directors, singers, composers and technicians headed to the Mayanagari-Bombay. K.L.Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Kidar Sharma, many Heroines, composers like Hemant kumar, Salil da, S.D.Burman, Pannalal Ghosh etc. shifted their base to Bombay.
Utpala Sen also did the same.
Born on 12-3-1924, at Barisal(now Bangla Desh), Utpala Sen completed her postgraduation and started training in music from Pt.Atul Prasad in Calcutta. She started singing on AIR and also joined many stage shows. S.D.Burman heard her once and gave her the First film song in a Bangla film “Judge saheber natni” (1943). Her first Hindi song was in New Theatre’s “My Sister” (1944).
Her songs from “Wasiyatnama” were popular.
She came to Bombay and sang for Pankaj Mullick in “Anjangadh” (1948). Later she sang in “Jhooti kasmen” (1948),”Chhota Bhai” and “Manzoor” in 1949, “Mala” in 1951 and “Zalzala” in 1952. In “Mala” she had one solo, one duet with Hemant Kumar and one song with Neeta Sen, Neelima Sanyal and Sheela Mitra. MD was Souren Mitra and Gaur Goswami.
She got married to famous Bangla singer/composer Satinath Mukherjee, left for Calcutta and settled there for good. She continued singing only in Bangla filmi and non filmi songs.
A rough estimate says, she sang close to 7000 songs.
Her husband died in 1992 and she died on 13-5-2005 at Calcutta.
Here is a song sung by her in “Zalzala” (1952). Uddhav Kumar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick.

Lyrics
hey
aaj sahi inkaar
magar kal karna hoga pyaar
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
sabhi jagah hain
sabhi jagah hain chanchal taaren
chanchal taaren
nainon ke mad bhare ishaare
sabhi jagah hain prem ka saagar
sabhi jagah majhdhaar
sabhi jagah majhdhaar
kisi se
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
aaj sahi inkaar magar
magar kal karna hoga pyaar
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
kab tak nazren
kab tak nazren door rakhoge
tum door rakhoge
milne se majboor rahoge
dekhoon kab tak nahin karoge
milne ka iqraar
tum milne ka iqraar
kisi se
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
aaj sahi inkaar
magar kal karna hoga pyaar
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
jeele peele
jee bhar peele roop ka pyaala
peele roop ka pyaala
kabhi na ye dil lautne waala
haan ji
ye dil lautne waala
ek ghadi ka thhat baat ye
ik pak ka darbaar
ik pak ka darbaar
kisi se
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
aaj sahi inkaar
magar kal karna hoga pyaar
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
aaj sahi inkaar
magar kal karna hoga pyaar
kisi se karna hoga pyaar
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
bachaana dil ka mushqil hai
