Kaise dekhoon meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I discovered this song just a few minutes back and am completely bowled over by it. It is from an unreleased film called Bharosa, starring Rajesh Khanna and Zaheera. The music is by R D Burman and the lyrics by Gulzar.

Though the pair R D Burman – Gulzar is very popular and famous they might have done at the most a dozen films together as composer-lyricist team. But their partnership was very fruitful. Pancham admitted that working with Gulzar brought the best in him though at times the work together was very complicated.

Gulzar is very famous for his unusual metaphors and in this song also he doesn’t disappoint. Has anybody heard of comparing the touch to the coolness of a deep shade or for that matter the taste of the lips with a cut moon ? But Gulzar does and does it good and Pancham’s music contributes greatly to convince the listener of these metaphors!
Further on Lata sings that she has taken up the habit of listening through the eyes! And I count your breath with my lips! Has a kiss been described more sweetly!

Song-Kaise dekhoon meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum (Bharosa) (1981) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

kaise dekhoon
meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum
kaise dekhoon
meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum
kaise dekhoon
meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum
tumko mehsoos hi karta hoon
ke ehsaas ho tum
mehke rehte ho mere jism mein
dekhoon kaise
koi umeed ho jaise,
koi vishwaas ho tum

kaise dekhoon

tumsa mil jaaye to kismat hi se bas milta hai
mehke rehte ho mere jism mein
dekhoon kaise

mehke rehte ho mere jism mein
dekhoon kaise
koi umeed ho jaise,
koi vishwaas ho tum

kaise dekhoon
meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum
tumko mehsoos hi karta hoon
ke ehsaas ho tum
kaise dekhoon
meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum

Gulzar seems to be using a sort of optical illusion theory in his verse ‘kaise dekhoon meri aankhon ke bahut paas ho tum’. In photographic language, an object very close to the normal lens becomes out of focus 🙂

Great Masters like Madhavacharya believed in Dvait philosophy (dualism) while others like Adi Sankaracharya believed in Advait (non dualism). Shaayad Gulzar saab bhi aisi hi kuchh philosophy mein maante hai. “Kabhi paas kabhi door” like you have said, optical illusion theory. 🙂 I always enjoy his songs.

Gulzar’s songs were surely always very philosophical!
