Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Roop tera aisa darpan mein na samaaye

Posted on: November 30, 2012

I tend to liken the journey of this blog to a train. But nowadays I find the comparison less appropriate because a train stops at intermediate stations for a while whereas we in this blog do not stop at any of the milestones and keep going along, though we may sometimes become somewhat slower than usual for various reasons. So that way, I find the comparison of this blog with a road journey somewhat more appropriate where one need not stop anywhere, and one can see milestones going past at high speed.

Today we approach yet another milestone in our musical journey. With this song, we touch the 7100 song mark. It was during this deewaali in this month itself that we had reached the magic 7000 song mark. With another century of song, now we are well on our way ahead for more milestones.

With so many songs already discussed, we now look forward to other kinds of milestones as well. The blog has songs created by nearly a thousand artists and many of them in fact have recorded their own centuries in the blog. Quite a few of them are into their multiple centuries and three of them are in fact in four figures as far as their songs in the blog are concerned. Of late, we have seen our contributors too notching up centuries of their contributions.

We sometimes try and combine two or more century milestones with one song. That is our own way of recognising the contributoions of the persons concerned. As the 7100 song mark approached, an artist was approaching his 300th mark. And this song happens to be his 300th song in the blog.

That artist is O P Nayyar. It is my privilege to present an O P Nayyar composition as his 300th song and as the 7100th song of the blog.

O P Nayyar began his career as a music director with “Aasmaan” (1952). There were eight songs in this movie and we have covered all the songs of this movie. The songs were fantastic to listen to. The music of one of these songs, viz. Pom pom pom baaja boley was adopted by the then newly started Binaca Geetmala programme as their signature tune. In this movie, he used the voices of C H Atma, Geeta Dutt and Rajkumari

O P Nayyar then composed music for “Chham Chhama Chham”(1952). He used the voices of Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Shamshad Begam, Jagmohan Bakshi and Sulochana in this movie. His next movie was “Baaz” (1953) and he used the voices of Talat Mehmood and Rafi for the first time in this movie, with Geeta Dutt being his female playback singer of choice. Music of “Aar Paar” (1954) turned out to be quite popular. He had used the voices of Geeta Dutt, Rafi and Shamshad Begam in this movie.

O P Nayyar had become established after 1954 and then he composed music in many movies through 1950s. His characteristic musical style became so popular that many other well established music directors viz. Madan Mohan, Roshan, Ghulam Mohammed etc sometimes copied his musical style in a few of their compositions.

It was during the second half of 1950s that O P Nayyar began to use Asha Bhonsle as his female playback singer of choice in place of Geeta Dutt.

O P Nayyar remained on top till about mid 1960s and after that his career (as that of most other music directors’ careers) went downhill, though he continued to create some nice music even during the fag end of his career.

O P Nayyar as a human being is an interesting case study. The fact that a music director in those days could reach the top without using the voice of Lata shows his strengh of character and his courage of conviction. It was O P Nayyar who was largely responsible in shaping the playback career of Asha Bhonsle at a time when she was struggling to make a mark for herself.

O P Nayyar was a man of big ego and he had ego clashed with others with similar egos. For instance, he worked with Guru Dutt in a few days but their ego clashed ensured that O P Nayyar stopped working with Guru Dutt in his subsequent movies.

O P Nayyar stopped working with Sahir Ludhianvi when he overheard Sahir Ludhianvi telling others in a party that he had made S D Burman what he was. O P Nayyar respected S D Burman a lot and so he, alongwith S D Burman decided not to work with Sahir Ludhianvi in future.

Though O P Nayyar never worked with Lata, he maintained that Lata was the number one among all female singers. It was just that Lata’s voice did not suit his compositions. Amin Sayani, in his programme “Geetmala Ki Chhaon Mein” states that O P Nayyar in fact gave him a farmaish of a Lata song as his favourite song.

O P Nayyar composed music in 72 Hindi movies in all. The number of songs in these movies adds up to around 560. So we already have majoriry of O P Nayyar compositions in the blog as we now have 300 O P Nayyar songs from 63 of his movies, with all songs covered in case of 11 of these movies. So it is only a matter of time when all available O P Nayyar compositions will adorn this blog.

Even diehard O P Nayyar fans will concede that many O P Nayyar compositions sound similar and may become monotonous after a while. For this post, I was in search of a song that sounded different from his usual music. He has indeed composed quite a few such songs, for instance in “Sambandh” (1969).

Just when I was running out of options, I came across this song whose lyrics were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt quite a while ago. This is one of those songs that I had loved listening to during its time without being aware of any of its details. The fact that this song is composed by O P Nayyar will come as a surprise to most music lovers.

This song is from “Ek Baar Muskura Do” (1972). This song is better heard than watched, and so I have provided an audio link of the song too. 🙂

The picturisation shows Deb Mukherji, singing this song after losing out his lady love to Joy Mukherji and singing this songduring the wedding of Joy Mukherji. The picturisation will make most people squeamish because the lady in question is Tanuja, the real life bhabhi of both Deb Mukherji and Joy Mukherji. Imagine two brothers playing lovers and husband respectively of their real life bhabhi, with Shomu Mukherji, Tanuja’s husband writing the story and screenplay and producing the movie!

There is more ! All relatives were brought in the movie to watch the spectacle too. The movie is directed by their elder, viz Ram Mukherji. and Shobana Samarth, Tanuja’s mother too appearing in the movie ! And the song is sung by Kishore Kumar, the maternal uncle of the Mukherji brothers !

Well, the movie has come and gone and has been forgotten, but what songs this movie had ! Four songs from this movie have already been discussed in the past and that includes such gems as Sawere ka sooraj tumhaare liye hai , Tu auron ki kyon ho gayi and Ye dil lekar nazraanaa aa gayaa teraa deewaanaa .

Here is this fantastic song “Roop tera aisa darpan mein na samaaye” from “Ek Baar Muskura do” (1972). This song, which has to be one of the great songs that Hindi movies has given us, is sung by Kishore Kumar. Indeewar is the lyricist.

I take this opportunity to thank all the visitors, contributors and well wishers whose support and encouragement is the energy that propels this musical juggernaut. May this musical journey go on and on.

Song-Roop tera aisa darpan mein na samaaye(Ek Baar Muskura Do)(1972) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

haarega jab koi baazi
tabhi to hogi kisi ki jeet
dost yahi duniya ki reet
tumhe mubaarak man ka meet

roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaaye
roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaaye
khushboo tere tan ki
madhuban mein na samaaye
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ke man mein na samaaye
palak bandh karloon
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaay
khushboo tere tan ki
madhuban mein na samaay
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ke man mein na samaay
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaay
khushboo tere tan ki
madhuban mein na samaay

mujhe na mili jo woh
khushi toone paayi
aye dost mubaarak ho tujhe
pyaar ki shehnaai
mujhe na mili jo woh
khushi toone paayi
aye dost mubaarak ho tujhe
pyaar ki shehnaai
duaa mere dil ki
duaa mere dil ki
daaman mein na samaaye
tujhe pyaar mile itna
jeevan mein na samaaye
mujhe khushi mili itni
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ke man mein na samaaye
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaaye
khushboo tere tan ki
madhuban mein na samaaye

meet mera chheen liya
meet mera chheen liya
toone chhab dikhake
sada usse rakhna
palkon pe tu beethake
itna sukh dena
jeevan mein na samaay
yun ras barsana
aangan mein na samaay
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ke man mein na samaay
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
roop tera aisa
darpan mein na samaay
khushboo tere tan ki
madhuban mein na samaay
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ho mujhe khushi mili itni
ke man mein na samaay
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
palak bandh karloo
kahin chhalak hi na jaay
palak bandh karloo

If my memory serves me right, (I had seen the movie 15 years back)
Deb Mukherjee ko pataa nahin rehthaa hai ke unnka dost (yaa bhai-yaad nahin hai) ka byaah Tanuja(jo deb ka pyaar hai) ke saath ho raha hai.For some reasons he was unable to attend the marriage function , That`s why he wishes the couple through radio station by singing a song though AIR 🙂

While he comes to know that his love was married to his dost/brother, he sings another cabret song with Fariyaal->”Tu hamaari thi, jaan se pyaari thi, tere liye maine duniyaa sanwaari thi, tu auron ki kyon ho gayee??”
(in front of tanuja and joy )

I repeat, I may be wrong in my story description, Please excuse and correct me, If I am wrong.

This is a special song. One of the great Kishore Kumar songs and a fitting song for OPN’s 300th. This songs is not so unlike OPN in tune, and never fails to remind me of another great song : https://atulsongaday.me/2008/09/16/dil-ki-aawaz-bhi-sun-mere-fasaane-pe-na-jaa/

Thanx a lot for reminding me of both these songs. And congrats for the newest milestone in the blog !
