Chaand niklega jidhar ham na udhar dekhenge

Filmistan’s Durgesh Nandini (1956) was an adaptation of the first ever Bengali novel Durgeshnondini. Published in 1865, it was written by none other than Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, immortalized as the composer of India’s national songVande Mataram.

Set in the Mughal era, the story is about Jagat Singh (Pradeep Kumar), a Rajput prince, who is sent by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to stop Katlu Khan, the Pathan ruler of Orissa, from capturing Bengal. During the campaign, he runs into Durgesh Nandini (Bina Rai), breathtakingly beautiful daughter of a Bengali nobleman, and falls hopelessly in love with her. Unfortunately, her father is a sworn enemy of Jagat Singh’s father! And so unfolds the plot…

Directed by B. Mitra, Durgesh Nandini is remembered best for Bina Rai’s dream sequence captured in its iconic number Kahaan le chale ho bataa do musaafir which is already on this Blog here.

But another of my big favourites from this movie is the heart-rending enunciation of unrequited love picturized on Nalini Jaywant: Chaand niklega jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge – expressed so poignantly yet ever so sweetly in the low and high octaves only as she can by Sur-Sarswati Lata Mangeshkar, then at the zenith of her vocal prowess. The protagonist’s heart-break is captured in Rajinder Krishan’s moving lyrics beautifully tuned by Hemant Kumar, who too as composer was at his creative peak with the contemporary releases such as Anand Math (1952), Shart, Nagin, Jagriti (all 1954), Inspector and Ek-Hi-Rasta (both 1956). He was ably assisted for this movie by Ravi, the later day premier composer in his own right.

Song-Chaand niklega jidhar ham na udhar dekhenge(Durgesh Nandini)(1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

chaand niklegaa jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge
chaand niklegaa jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge
jaagate sote teri raah-e-guzar dekhenge
jaagate sote teri raah-e-guzar dekhenge
chaand niklegaa jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge

ishq to honthon pe fariyaad na laayega kabhi
ishq to honthon pe fariyaad na laayega kabhi
dekhne waale muhabbat ka jigar dekhenge
chaand niklegaa jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge

zindagi apni guzar jaayegi shaam-e-gham mein
zindagi apni guzar jaayegi shaam-e-gham mein
Woh koi aur hi honge jo sahar dekhenge

jaagte sote teri raah-e-guzar dekhenge
chaand niklegaa jidhar hum na udhar dekhenge

Gupta ji,
Thanks for posting a song from the Golden Era.I always liked songs composed by Hemant da.
The FIRST EVER Bangla Novel was ” Karuna o Phulmonir Bibaran” published in 1852 at Calcutta. Then came “Aaler Ghore Dulal” published in 1858 in Dhaka. Then there were few more novels till Bankim da published his ” Durgesh Nandini” in 1865.
However the Novel form of literature became popular only after Durgesh Nandini, hence this novel has its importance in History of Bangla Literature.

But factually it was NOT the FIRST EVER Novel in Bangla.

I used to visit Calcutta frequently from 70s to 90s and had a brush with Bangla Literature during that period, thats how I have this info.
