Onward, incessantly, the regularity with which this team continues to scale the centuries is both amazing an very heartening. And a cooperation and a camaraderie, that is really remarkable by any measure. May the blessings remain upon us, together, always.
And let me remind friends and readers of a monumental event that just occurred on this blog. A few comments were posted, but it appears as if many of our circle of friends may have missed these comments. On 11th December, earlier this week, the visitor counter on this blog crossed the FOUR MILLION mark. This is a stupendous achievement for this blog and a vindication of the fact that this our blog is now the NO. 1 destination on the internet for the lovers of Hindi film music. Please see the page ‘About This Blog’ (link at the top of the page), to read the comments exchanged on this occasion. I want to repeat my congratulations to Atul ji and the entire team. Wow, Wow and Wow.
For this significant milestone, I present today a very interesting and a rare on screen performance. This song is done by the character actor Jayant, where he is sharing the floor with Helen. It is really an impressive performance.
Jayant – the upright pathaan or the fearful boss of many films, is an actor that many newer generation fans may not be familiar with. Born in 1915 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), Zacharein Khan came to Bombay as a teenager in search for a career in films. There is a very interesting and anecdote filled article about his life and his career, that is available in Cineplot. This article is prepared from an interview done in 1991, with one of his sons, either Amjad Khan or Imtiaz Khan.
Jayant started his career in the early 30s, and has appeared as the lead actor in some films. Later on he moved to character roles, and continued to work till the early 1980s. He has acted in approximately 140 films in a career that spanned almost five decades.
He may have performed songs in his early career, but no details are handy. I found this song online. Another of those songs, heard on the radio and then they stay with you for life. Recently, as I was able to locate the video clip of this song, I was pleasantly surprised to see Jayant performing this song on screen. It must be a unique performance by him. And he is
serenading Helen, no less. One of the Helen songs where she only performs the dance. Jayant is trying woo her, promising her all his riches, promising her a good life, doing all the antics a person crazed with love would do. And at the end of the song, he eventually carries her off on his shoulders (wow).
The film is ‘Ek Nannhi Munni Ladki Thi’ from 1970. This film is known for its wonderful music – and the music director is Ganesh. Two songs from this film are already posted here. The film was produced under the banner of Ramsey Productions, Bombay and directed by Vishram Bedekar. The star cast of this film includes Prithviraj Kapoor, Mumtaz, Surendra Kumar, Jayant, Shatrughan Sinha, Helen, Sajjan, Nadira, Laxmi Chhaaya, Mubaarak, Shyam and the child actor Bobby. The film has five songs in all, written by Asad Bhopali. The music is by Ganesh. As we have come to experience often with songs composed by him and posted on this blog, this remarkably talented music director would have been a force to reckon with, had he got better recognition and better assignments. This song here is another example of how wonderfully he can handle the melodies and rhythms. And yes, expectedly, this song is sung by Manna Dey.
The setting seems to be a kind of an Arabic restaurant. Jayant is present in full pathaan regalia, presenting himself as a rich sheikh, or something close. Helen, is present in the typical Arabic belly dancer’s attire. As always, her dance movements are effortless, they are perfect, and of course, very sensuous.
This video is definitely worth the viewing, as Jayant conducts himself so well in this song performance. Enjoy his lip syncing and the dance by Helen. Wonderful combination.

Here is a trivia.. This song is the 7200th song of the blog. Another song from the movie, “Apne Rukhsaar Zaraa” was the 2400th song of this blog :).

I missed reading the milestone part. 😦 Bhool meri nahin hai, jayant aur Helen ki jodi dekhne mein hi……. On the top of that, I was trying to learn all those words, shab, em-shab, di-shab, kujo, …… Don’t know if I will ever be able to ask my hubby “kujo bemo merafti di-shab” 😆
Anyway, congratulations to Atulji and his team/fans on this milestone. 🙂

I like Jayant a lot – he had a towering personality. From the top of my head, I remember him in Amar, Beti Bete, Mem-Didi and Do Raaste, A very good actor.

Thanks for your wonderful write up-as usual,ofcourse.Though they are always very good,they do not cease to excite the readers everytime.
Jayant was manlihood personified,with his height and tough looks.He was a very kind person in real life and loved to play with children.Strange it may sound but it is true.
Jayant had acted in Mala-1941 and played the same role in Amar-1954-a remake of Mala-41.Thus he has beaten kanhaiyalal who did this in Aurat and mother India-57.
7200 songs and 40 lakh++ visitors……..No words to describe the immense popularity of this Blog,all over the World.There are contributors from USA(Khyati ji,Memsaab ji), UK (Atif bhai),Europe (Harvey ji,Raja ji) and SE Asia (Santosh Oza ji).
There are comment ers from India,Pakistan,Mauritius,Saudi Arabia,New Zealand,Australia and many other places.
What more proof is needed to declare this Blog,a truly MULTINATIONAL FAVOURITE ?

Just remembered one piece of trivia about this movie, Ek Nanhi Munni Ladki Thi.
I vaguely remember this movie from my childhood. There was some sort of a scary scene also in the movie, which became quite famous.
One of the Ramsay brothers mentioned this. I think they were distributors for the movie, or had gone to see this movie. At the hall, they noticed that everybody was talking only about that scary scene. People even came to the hall only to get scared. 🙂 They would leave the hall right after the scene. 🙂
That put an idea in the head of the Ramsay brothers. The idea of making a horror film. This was the movie that gave them the inspiration – and the confidence that there was a market for horror films in India. They of course became quite successful in this genre.
