Tum aao rumjhum karti

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music abd a regular contributor to this blog.

There have been many an artist from the Hindi cinema, that have become enduring icons in the cultural history of our country. And there are many a great artists with wonderful qualities to create and render in films and film music. Majority of those whom we remember, are not with us anymore in this physical world. And we think of them, remember them, and feel blessed that we have had the good fortune to be born in this time and in this place, where this wonder that we call the Hindi film music ruled, and still rules, the hearts of millions. The sounds and songs of the yesteryear still abound in the memory of music lovers. That memory is a great treasure, and a heritage of lasting presence.

There are so many that we remember with awe, and passion, and happiness, and fascination. But there is one, just one in my mind, that I miss. And that is the voice of Rafi Sb. When he left us more than three decades ago, it was a sorrowful event that happened just too soon. There still was a great deal that the fans looked forward to, but alas. . . I miss this voice, for I was too young at that time to comprehend the depth of his talent, and the wonderful gift that he had – a sound that simply did not know what it was that meant getting old. And whereas there have been, and are, great singers that one listens to with wonder, as one realizes that they are simply lost so deeply in the rendering, and that is where their greatness and their performance comes from. The difference that I think there is with Rafi Sb, is that he too scaled the farthest depths of soul, to bring out his performance, and yet, his voice and his demeanor showed, that even at that depth of concentration and extreme focus, he is not lost, but rather, he is acutely aware of where he is and is thoroughly enjoying it, be it a sound of melancholy or a sound of joy.

Remembering Rafi Sb today on his birth anniversary. It is just another milestone in the journey of life, and the fondness continues to grow with every passing year. It may be said of this wonderful singer, that his popularity has grown more and more, after people realized he is not with us anymore.

This offering by Rafi Sb is one of his most endearing non film songs and is a great favorite. Based on information available on the internet, the words of this wonderful piece are from the pen of Madhukar Rajasthani, and the melodious music is by none other than Khayyaam. A truly delightful song of love, of waiting for the next rendezvous, of calling out to the beloved, remembering, reminding of the earlier moments spent together. And the voice that carries these words, this composition, actually carries away the mind, to a dream world of love – where the physical distance between the lovers loses its meaning, where these emotions of love are beyond the everyday experience, and where this waiting is outside of time. You would know why, I am sure.

Yes, because this voice is outside of time.

tum aao, rum jhum karti, paayal ki jhankaar liye
nain bichhaaye baittha koi phoolon bhari bahaar liye

O my love
Come to me
Accompanied
By the tinkling melody
Of the musical anklets in your feet
I wait here
Gazing at the path you will come
Waiting for you
With a spring full of flowers
Waiting for you. . .

tera wo angdaai lenaa, yaad hai phir kuchh muskaa dena
us din hi to tu ne mujhko preetam ke adhikaar diye

I remember
Your lazy stretching movements
And the slight smile on your lips
The day we met last
The day
When you gave me
The privilege
Of being your soulmate
Oh the wonderful day

yehi jo ghadiyaan hain jeevan ki, pyaasi tere madhur milan ki
beet gayee to phir nahin aani ye sunder uphaar liye

Ah these blessed moments of life
Waiting for your presence
Yearning
For that pleasing, lovable tryst (with you)
O my love
Come to me
For these fleeting moments
May not tarry
May not visit us again
With these gifts of delightful joy
O my love
Come to me

A lovely ode to Rafi saab Sudhir Ji. Never heard this Rafi NFS earlier, and loved it. Many happy returns of the day Rafi saab. I am sure, for the fans of this blog, not one day goes by where we do not listen to a Rafi number. Rafi saab must be really busy in heaven now, treating the Gods to his wonderful voice :).

May the Golden voice of Rafi saab live for ever.

He has sung bhajans, geets and ghazals. NFS is all together a different world where the singer, lyricists and MD can work without the distributors, producers, directors, actors breathing fire down their throat dictating terms. No encumbrance. Here’s were they all flower at their own pace.

I somehow feel that this is not real Rafi, at least on this recording. His voice is sounding so different. I have heard this song in Radio Ceylon (where else). Lovely composing by Khayyam Saab and Madhukar Rajasthani and sung only by Rafi Saab

Sudhir Sir,

Thanks a lot for the lovely write up about Rafi sahab. I have heard this song for the first time today. I heard it three times to ascertain it is really Rafi sahab singing. I was finally convinced by the last stanza ‘yahi jo ghadiyaan hain jeevan ki’ .

I am a little puzzled , why he is trying to sing like everybody but himself. There has to be a reason for this.

Its unmistakably Rafi all through. Why there should be any doubt. Maybe, as I said earlier there is no encumbrances in NFS. Therefore he has sung freely and in so called different voice.
