The year is 1946, and the song “Dil Jalta Hai. . .” from ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945, MD – Anil Biswas) is now well known. The staying power and popularity of this song can be judged from the fact that over the years, many people started to consider this song as his debut song, completely forgetting his other songs from 1941 to 1944. With this success behind him, Mukesh was now a more sought after singer, as is evident from the dramatic increase in his singing assignments in 1946.
This song is the second song that Mukesh has rendered for the film ‘Chehraa’ (1946). The film is produced under the banner of Upright Pictures, and is directed by Rajendra Sharma. It is a social drama and the list of actors includes Nazma, Kamal Zamindar, Suraiya Zulfi, S Kapoor, Mustafa, Jugal Kishore, Kaneez, Amir Banu, Baby Anwari, Baldev Raj, S Nazir, etc. The film has 9 songs, which are written by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor, and the music is composed by MA Mukhtar.
A song of melancholy, citing the philosophy of life, and talking about the helplessness and the futility of human existence. All efforts go towards trying to create happiness, and still it is the tears and sorrows that are the reality in life. The words are simple, but the expressions are powerful. Listen and the feel the sadness of ‘Dil Hi Bujha Huaa Ho To. . .’ recreated.
