Ae mere dost ae mere hamdam

on:“Meharbaan” (1967) was an AVM productions movie. It was directed by A Bhim Singh. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Shashikala, Sulochana, Shyama, Padma, Raj Mehra, Jayanti, Ashok Kumar, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Ramesh Deo, Asim Kumar etc in it.
It is curious to note that this movie, among the top ten grossers at the box office during 1967, has so far remained unrepresented in the blog.
Avinash Scrapwala, who sent me the lyrics of this song, informs me that the voice of Rafi figures in all the songs of this movie. What was the story of this movie ? Those who have seen “Swarg” (1990) can rest assured that the story of “Meharbaan” (1967) and that of “Swarg” (1990) are one and the same, with only the faces changing, viz Ashok Kumar giving way to Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt being replaced by Govinda, etc etc.
Here is the first song from this movie to appear in the blog. It is sung by Rafi. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Song-Ae mere dost ae mere hamdam (Meharbaan)(1967) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
Mujhe jab apni
guzri zindagaani yaad aati hai
to bas ek meharbaan ki
meharbaani yaad aati hai
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
mere mohsin mere karam farmaa
wo meraa gham thaa
yaa khushi meri
har jagah toone meraa saath diyaa
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
mere mohsin mere karam farmaa
wo meraa gham thaa
yaa khushi meri
har jagah toone meraa saath diyaa
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
kaun thaa tu
kahaan se aaya thaa
aaj tak maine ye nahin jaana
tu meri rooh thaa magar maine
tere jaane ke baad pehchaana
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
mere mohsin mere karam farmaa
wo meraa gham thaa
yaa khushi meri
har jagah tune meraa saath diyaa
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
tu Sudaamaa bhi hain
Kanhaiyaa bhi
Kanhaiyaa
Kanhaiyaa
tu Sudaamaa bhi hain
Kanhaiyaa bhi
tu bhikaari bhi aur daata bhi
tere sau rang hain mere pyaare
tu hi pyaasa hai tu hi jharnaa bhi
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
mere mohsin mere karam farmaa
wo meraa gham thaa
ya khushi meri
har jagah toone meraa saath diyaa
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
tu meri bebasi ke aalam mein
jab kabhi mujh ko yaad aata hai
Soch kar meharbaaniyaan teri
dil meraa baith baith jataa hai
aakhri araj meri tujh se hai
har khataa meri dar gujar karnaa
wo ghadi aa rahi hain jab mujhko
iss zamaane se hai safar karnaa
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam
ae mere dost
ae mere hamdam

(NOTE: ‘dar-guzar’ ‘दर-गुज़र’ = to overlook, to pardon)

Thanks Atul ji for this beautfiul post !!!
Atul ji i need to correct myself, and sorry for the inconvenience caused. The correction is this film ‘Meharbaan-1967’ (as per the information available on the domain) had total 06+01 (one song in two versions). Three solo songs by Rafi Saab, actually it is four, but one has been credited with Mehmood i.e. mera gadha gadhon ka leader (already sent), where Mehmood is doing mimic of a donkey’s voice , one is the song mentioned by Mani ji – sung by Rafi and Lata, and one solo each of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. thanks again!!!

‘Meherbaan’ was a remake of the immensely successful Tamil ‘Paditha Methai’ Sivaji Ganesan’s role was done by Sunil Dutt and Ranga Rao’s role was done by Ashok Kumar. I saw it during my college days in Bombay and I must say ‘Meherbaan’ did quite well. Those were the days when people waited for a ‘South’ made ‘family social’. There’s this excellent song in the Tamil version, “Ore oru ooriley ore oru raja…”. The Hindi version of this song sung by Lata and Rafi is equally good …”Ek raja ki sunlo kahani…”

Thanks Mani ji for the information shared. My first information of this films was the review of the film ‘Swarg-1990’ which mentioned that it was based on/remake of the film ‘Meharbaan’ of Ashok Kumar & Sunil Dutt.
Second interaction was when i was searching this song – ‘mera gadha gadhon ka leader’ which was in my vague memories and i was not aware then from which film it was. the song -‘ek raja ki sunlo kahaani’ – mentioned by you triggers my memory to have heard it years back but yesterday night i listen its first version fully and shall try to sent its post at the earliest possible, as it is a very nice song as mentioned by you. thanks again !!!
