Haseenon ke dhokhe mein aana na ae dil

We see many animals ‘acting’ in the films, but we hardly know how much efforts of the Trainers has gone behind that. Besides taking care of the animals, the trainers have to tolerate the ‘moods’ of the animals also.
With the the stunt films in “C” grade dwindling, animals which are used nowadays in films are only the pet animals, like Dogs, cats, Birds etc. The use of wild animals like Tigers, Lion, Elephants etc is no more required in the films. Horses are used sometimes.
Jimmy Bharucha, one of the best Horse Trainers in India, had himself been trained in foreign countries. He had opened a Horse Training School in Poona. Yesteryear actor SHYAM was one of his earliest students. For all his films, Shyam used the same horse from Bharucha.
Whenever he talked about Shyam, Bharucha got emotional.
That fateful day, Shyam was in a very cheerful mood. He joked with other artists as usual. The film was SHABISTAN. He had to do a stunt scene on a horse. His double was kept ready. However Shyam insisted on doing that dangerous shot himself that day. The scene started and was also completed successfully. There was a round of applauding claps.
Shyam was getting down from the horse and suddenly, the horse started running. Shyam’s foot got stuck in the stirr-up and he was dragged some distance before people ran and stopped the horse. Shyam was unconcious. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but he died-with his make up and costume still on him !( another actor who died on the sets was comedian actor Gope. He finished his shot. His last dialogue was ” Main upar jaa raha hoon”, and he collapsed with a massive heart attck which took his life instantly.)
Bharucha had supplied horses to films like Aan, Anarkali and Mughal e Azam etc. He had supplied Dogs for films like Love in Simla, Hum Hindustani etc. Once when the Producer was not paying in time he stopped the animal’s work. They were paid immediately because the animal’s shots were half done till that time.
Bharucha had trained one beautiful white Horse to dance to the tune of Waltz and Cha Cha. The horse was in great demand by Taj Mahal Hotel to entertain Foreign guests !
There was another pair-Sudhir Khare and his son who supplied animals, mainly Dogs. Dogs were supplied for Achaanak, Koi jeeta koi haara, Joi Bangla Desh, Maati maange khoon etc. Khare says that the Dogs need rest after a shot of 15-20 minutes. Stingy producers are not ready for that. In film Aakhri Daao, his dog was made to run a distance 20 times. After the shot, the Dog died of exaustion.
After such incidents Khare stopped working for films and shifted to Night petroling work. He says this work is available throughout the year and pays more too.
Mr. Ron Marquis and his daughter Karen supply Dogs, cats, birds, Pigs etc to films. They had some Deers and Peacocks too, but the Forest officers took them away and released them in the jungles.
Dogs resent frequent rehearsals, once they understand the shot. In the film,”Kahani ek chor ki”, there was a scene where Vinod Mehra was sitting with a Briefcase and a thief tries to steal it. The dog has to chase the thief away. The rehersals were done so many times that the Dog was irritated. In the shooting, instead of chasing the thief, the dog attacked Vinod Mehra and bit him.
Marquis tells smilingly that Vinod Mehra’s mother was visiting their shop everyday for a month to find out if the Dog had died !
Mr.Verma hailed from Rajasthan. A son of a wealthy jaagirdar, he came to Bombay to become an actor. Having failed in this, he started supplying animals to films. Initially he had only two Horses, but it incresed to 40 horses in 2 stables and some camels too. He not only trained his horses, but also opened a Riding school. Many heroes and actresses like Nirupa Roy and Anita raj were trained by him. He supplied horses in Betaab, Sholey, Kabhi Kabhi, Mera Gaaon Mera Desh,Joshiley, Abdulla etc. In doing work for Abdulla, three of his horses died when the truck carrying them overturned in a Riverbed. While doing Bhola Bhala, one horse died when it stumbled, fell down and broke his leg.
Vermaji says that horses need a break after every 60 minutes. For Betaab, they needed 7 horses. To maintain continuity, they painted 6 horses black too. The main Black horse used by Sunny deol was his favourite. Unfortunately,he broke his leg during shooting. Normally such horses are put to sleep, but Sunny gave lots of money to keep him alive.
Such cases are rare.
Vermaji has lot of anecdotes of actors. He rues the fact that some trouble-makers write false letters to SPCA and they frequently come for investigation for cruelty complaints. Sometimes it is a headache but the SPCA has given good certificate to them for handling animals, he said.
Manoj kumar, he says, was afraid of the horses. Similarly, Perveen Babi too was scared and generally avoided Horses, but she did a good job in Razia Sultan. Most Unfortunate was Talluri Rameshwari, who fell from a Horse and damaged her one eye, which thwarting her film career as a herione for ever.
Horses are averse to contineous rehersals and work. Tony, the producer of Natwarlal made the horse do excessive rehersals. The Horse took his revenge and bit him on the shoulder sending him to Hospital for a month !
The funniest anecdote is from film Apsara. In this film the Heroine is cursed to become a Horse in daytime and a woman in Night time. The horse doing her daytime role was trained to look into the mirror, like a girl, every now and then.
In addition to all these suppliers there is one Mr. Govind Raj in Chennai, who specialises in all odd animals like Hyena, bears, owls, pythons in addition to lions and Tigers. He is known as Tiger Govinda.
He had supplied a Tiger for film Natwarlal. He says that the Tiger would eat its lunch only if Amitabh bachhan ate his lunch ! He would wait anxiously for Amitabh to eat his Lunch !!
Govindraj regrets that unlike cats and Dogs and horses, the Insurance companies do not insure Tigers, Lions,Elephants or any wild animal.
So,this was the world of Animals and Films.
I thank Memsaab ji, for kindly permitting me to use material from an article by Mala ji, and posted on her Blog. Thanks also to Vasant Bhalekar and Subhash Savarkar for their articles for which they have the Copyrights.
Now,coming to today’s film TARZAN AND KINGKONG-1965, like I have said earlier, all odd combinations are used in Tarzan films by our Producers,to make their movie exclusive(!) and different than others.(so what if it is becoming ridiculous too !).
We have seen Greek, Roman, Mythological and fantasy characters added to our Desi Tarzan stories like Delilah, Hercules, Cobra, Alladdin etc. In today’s film it is King Kong from America who joins forces with Tarzan..
The first film ‘KING KONG’ was made in Hollywood in 1933 by M C Cooper, in which the oversize hugh animal was shown living on an island in the Pacific. He was called only KONG in it.
Later the Japanese film industry which did not want to lag behind created a more hugh animal called ‘ GODZILLA ‘ in 1954.
In 1960,there was a film ‘KING KONG V/S GODZILLA”.
It is a very soothing, a satisfying and a wonderful feeling to see that the world cinema, particularly American, Japanese and lately the Chinese film industries do not lag behind their Indian counterpart in making senseless “C” grade films. Only difference is that their films are tecnically and technologically much more advanced than ours. Their stunt and action films are slick and are on big scale, due to availability of world market.
There were atleast 20 versions of King Kong and Godzilla each in the last 50 years or so.( happy to note that there is a part of audience there too with the same taste, like in India!)
TARZAN AND KINGKONG-1965 was an Amrit Kala mandir production, directed by A.Shamsheer, who also wrote the lyrics and the Music Director was Robin Bannerji. The cast incuded Randhawa, Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Shyam Kumar, Bela Bose,Rani, Heera Saawant, Rajen Kapoor, bhagwan, Roopesh Kumar( first cousin of Mumtaj) etc.
The story was-
An aeroplane carrying tourists catches fire in the air and crashes. Bismilla Khan saves Sharmila(Mumtaz), his Boss’s daughter, by using parachutes. They land in a jungle. The jungle queen Shibani sends her troops to capture these two as a ” sacrifice'” to the Jungle deity. Tarzan(Randhawa) the king of Jungle, however spoils their plans and saves the tourists.
Sharmila is not only impressed with his command on elephants, but very promptly also falls in his love. For some time she sings a song or two, with Tarzan making odd sounds and just jumping ‘meaningfully!’
Shibani and her minister Romi(Shyam Kumar) try various plans to kill these people but Tarzan saves them everytime.
Once the famous wrestler Dara Singh is passing through the jungle. He is captured and made to fight with Tarzan to kill him, but they become friends. Now Romi arrests all and releases his prized caged animal KINGKONG to fight Tarzan and kill him. There is a fight, but lastly Kingkong prefers to kidnap Sharmila than to kill Tarzan !
Tarzan, as if waiting for this to happen, now breaks his chain, follows Kingkong and kills it rescuing Sharmila.
Tarzan and Dara Singh together destroy the tyrannical empire of Romi and the queen Shibani
Here is a nice song from this film by Mubarak Begum.
This is the 9th and penultimate post on the Tarzan films in this series. The next and the 10th posting will feature a film in which my favourite Stunt hero KAMRAN is featuring……
Song-Haseenon ke dhokhe mein aana na ae dil (Tarzan and Kingkong)(1965) Singer-Mubarak Begam, Lyrics-A Shamsheer, MD-Robin Bannerji
Chorus
Lyrics
haseenon ke dhokhe mein aana na ae dil
haseenon ke dhokhe mein aana na ae dil
nigaahen milaane ki koshish na karna
nigaahen milane ki koshish na karna
haseenon ke dhokhe me aana na ae dil
nigaahen milaane ki koshish na karna
badi keemti cheez hai ye jawaani
tu yoon hi lutaane ki koshish na karna
koshish na karna
nigaahen milaane ki koshish na karna
Zulekha ki ulfat ko Yousuf se poocho
Zulekha ki ulfat ko Yousuf se poocho
bhala ishq mein kaisi barbaadiyaan hain
bhala ishq mein kaisi barbaadiyaan hain
mohabbat ke gulshan mein jaakar to dekho
mohabbat ke gulshan mein jaakar to dekho
bahaaron ke peeche hi veeraaniyaan hain
jawaani ki jaadugari mein ulajh kar
haqeeqat chupaane ki koshish na karna
haqeeqat chupaane ki koshish na karna
koshish na karna
koshish na karna
nigaahen milaane ki koshish na karna
sitaare bhi badley zamaana bhi badla
sitaare bhi badley zamaana bhi badla
mohabbat ne dastoor hargiz na badla
mohabbat ne dastur hargiz na badla
yahaan tak ke ulfat ki chaukhat pe aakar
yahaan tak ke ulfat ki chaukhat pe aakar
sikanadar ne bhi apna dam todd daala
bade pyaare qaatil hai ye husn waale
inhen aazmaane ki koshish na karna
inhen aazmaane ki koshish na karna
nigaahen milaane ki koshish na karna
