Holi khele Nandlala biraj mein

Posted on: March 27, 2013

“Raahi” (1953) was a Naya Sansaar Production movie. It was directted by K A Abbas. The movie had Dev Anand, Nalini Jaiwant, Habib Tanvir, Balraj Sahni, K. Sethi, Manmohan Krishnan, Achla Sachdev, S. Michael, Rasheed, Shaukat Hashmi, David Abraham etc in it.

On the occasion of Holi today (27 march 2013), here is a wonderful Holi song from “Raahi” (1953). This song is a surprisingly lesser known Holi song. Even the details of the song are not fully known.

This song is sung by Ira Majumdar and a few unknown male voices, in addition to the chorus. Dasrath Lal is the lyricist and music is composed by Anil Biswas.

I find the picturisation as well as the audio of this song quite interesting. The lyrics of the song are of Western UP origin. The initial dance and music sound like from Bengal. Subsequently the female dancers are shown dancing Assam’s Bihu dance, while male dancers dance a dance from some other region. And the music that plays has percussion instruments playing desi beats as well as beats that sound videshi in some parts. Subsequently the dances change to some other dance forms.

I can identify Dev Anand (who plays a bystander) while a pretty looking Nalini Jaiwant lip syncs in Ira Majumdar’s voice. There are unknown actors who lip syncing in equally unknown voices. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify these actors, voices etc.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala and later by Nitin Shah and I too have devoted considerable time in listening to the lyrics, but there are still gaps in the lyrics that have remained undeciphered. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the gaps/ point our the errors in the lyrics.

The first lines are repeated in Baagban and sung by Amitabh Bachchan. That said, this is a seldom heard Holi number. Thanks to all you for the effort in unearthing this number.

Excellent choreography here. I am intrigued about you saying that the dance style is actually a medley from various regions. It sounds like a proper holi song/dance that a village or a mohalla puts up.

The youtube link mentioned Prem Dhawan as the lyricist whereas you have mentioned the name of Dashrath Lal.

The dancers also seem to be teasing a foreigner lady who is clicking pics. They have her ‘effigy’ on display and also seem to be tugging and pulling at her, poor thing.
