Aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi

Posted on: April 11, 2013

“Aankh Ki Sharam” (1943) is quite an obscure movie by any standards. The little information that is available on internet suggests that the movie was directed by Balwant Bhatt and that the movie had Prithviraj Kapoor, Kaushalya, Agha, Trilok Kapoor, Moti, Gulab, Himalaya, Nalini Gupta etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Meenakshi. Fortunately, the video of this seventy year old movie is available. The picturisation shows a few spoilt men bringing a tawaif to their palace and listening to her mujra performance. Much of the time she is seen seated among her audience and it is only for a few seconds that she stands up and shakes a limb or two in the style that we have now come to associate with mujra songs in Hindi movies.

I am unable to identify any of the actors in the picturisation. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors. And who is this singer Meenakshi ? Could she be Meenakshi Shirodkar ?

Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.

Here is this song which could well be one of the oldest mujra songs in Hindi movies.

Song-Aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi(Aankh Ki Sharam)(1943) Singer-Meenakshi, Lyrics-Pt Indra Chandra, MD-Vasant Desai

Lyrics

Aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi haan
aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi
pyaar karne ki tabeeyat ho gayi
pyaar karne ki tabeeyat ho gayi
kis liye tirchi nazar neechi huyi
haan
kis liye tirchi nazar neechi huyi
haakimon par bhi huqoomat ho gayi
haakimon par bhi huqoomat ho gayi

aa aa aa
dil mein dil hai
dard hai
ya pyaar hai
aa aa aa
dil mein dil hai
dard hai
ya pyaar hai
apne dar(?) kis kis ki himmat ho gayi
apne dar(?) kis kis ki himmat ho gayi
bhoolna hi
yaad rehta hai unhen haan
bhoolna hi
yaad rehta hai unhen haan
yaad rakhna
apni aadat ho gayi
yaad rakhna
apni aadat ho gayi
aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi haan
aankh milte hi muhabbat ho gayi
pyaar karne ki tabeeyat ho gayi
pyaar karne ki tabeeyat ho gayi

I can recognise only young Trilok Kapoor, the main (Chief) guest of this Mujra Party, in black coat!

The tune of this song reminds me of ‘Zindagi ka saaz bhi kya saaz hai’ from film ‘Pukar’ (1939) (MD Meer Sahib). A very good copy of a very good song by sangeetkar Vasant Desai.
This reminds me of another story where a famous tune was copied.
MD Sajjad Hussain with his hot temperament attacked MD Madan Mohan accusing him of copying his tune of ‘Yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chandani’ from film ‘Sangdil’ and using it for ‘Tujhe kya sunaun main dilruba’ in film ‘Aakhari Daau’. Diplomatic Madan Mohan replied “Mai proud hun ki maine aire gaire sangeetkar ki copy nahi ki hai, maine to mahan sangeetkar Sajjad Saheb ke gaane ki copy ki hai” !!!

This song is a very clear copy of Kamsini mein dil pe gham ka vaar kyun by Shanta Apte in Amrit Manthan (1934), composed by Keshavrao Bhole. The form is a ghazal sung in slow tarannum style. Some sources mention this as the first ever ghazal in Hindi films. This claim is apparently wrong because Yahudi Ki Ladki came in 1933.
