The song I have chosen for discussion is a Mukesh-Shamshad duet ‘moti chugne gayi re hansi maansarovar teer’ from the film ‘CHHEEN LE AZAADI (1947) which I have been all along assuming to have already beencovered in the blog. Now I find that this duet is yet to be discussed in the blog. The reason for my erroneous assumption was that some time back our dear Sudhir had taken up the mission of posting Mukesh songs pertaining to 1940s.
I came to know of this film only through this blog. The film was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and was directed by Aspi Irani. The film had nine songs, all penned by Pandit Indra Chandra and set to music by Hansraj Bahl. Two songs from this film have been covered in the blog.
Some details about the film and its star cast as set out by dear Arunkumar Deshmukh in one of his comments another song of the film are given below:
CHHEEN LE AZAADI(1947) was made in 1947 early part when India’s Independence was in sight. However, to be on the safe side, the story was a veiled one, not attacking any particular enemy directly and they also made it a costume drama to be safer further. It was a story of people’s mutiny against a Zulmi kingdom, under British raj and the Hero-Ghulam Mohammed dies in the end. His lover Veena carries the flag further etc.
This film had Veena and Ghulam Mohammed as a lead players. Our readers may be knowing about Veena but information about Ghulam Mohammed is not available easily anywhere. Hence I shall give some information.
He started his career with Imperial from 1932 to 1938. Ghulam Mohammed started as a villain in MADHURI-1932. This is the same film whose songs were published as recorded songs first time in India. From 1933, he started as a hero in Daku ki Ladki. Then he went to Lahore to Dalsukh Pancholi on his invitation. From 1942 to 45, he did films like Khandaan, Zamindar and Shirin Farhad and returned to Bombay.
In Bombay, he did about 20-25 films, including Sanyasi, Jugnu, Lakhon Mein Ek, Heer Ranjha, Chhin Le Azadi etc. Then he migrated to Pakistan.
In CHHEEN LE AZADI,there is a song ‘Kamzoron ki nahin hai duniya’ sung in 2 parts by H. Faruqi (more information about this less known singer of 40s is given on 3-9-2011 with the song Jeevan hai anmol-Lakhon Mein Ek). This song became very popular with the Freedom fighters of India, during the last phase of our Freedom struggle in 1947.
The song under discussion was one of the most popular songs of the film. Only the audio clip is available and that too with less than perfect audio quality. Hence, it was difficult to decipher the lyrics with accuracy. Despite the audio deficiency, the song is lovely to my ears with typical K L Saigal type of rendition by Mukesh. In fact, when he sings the line ‘maansarover teer’ I get a feel of K L Saigal’s voice only.

“abhi mite nahin pyaas bhi iski, pyaaa sada adheer(?)” sounds “abhi mite nahin pyaas preet ki, pyaasa sada adheer” to me.

Thanks for pointing out the mistakes in lyrics. ‘pyaaa’ was the typo mistake.

Thanks for this wonderful song, and also for the reminder about my effort to complete the Mukesh songs of the 1940s. Yes, it has been a while that I have not posted in that series. And the reason is that I am stuck at the last song for 1946, which I am not able to locate. A friend has promised that he has this song on a cassette, but has not yet located it to give me a copy. And my efforts from other sources have drawn a blank as yet. Harish ji Raghuvanshi also confirmed that he had all the songs on cassettes, but some of them have been damaged, and he is not able to recover.
But I think you are right in pointing out, and that I should continue beyond 1946, and come back to complete this missing song, whenever it becomes available.
Regarding the song in this post, I have an even more clear recording than the one posted by Atul ji. The correction for the lines with (?) is as follows.
“abhi mite nahin pyaas bhi iski
pyaaa sada adheer(?)”
should read
“kabhi mitey nahin pyaas preet ki
pyaasa sadaa adheer”
Shekhar ji’s deciphering is almost completely correct, except for the first word ‘kabhi’. (I have sent the correction to Atul ji, along with lyrics in Hindi).
And yes, I shall continue the Mukesh journey of the 1940s, right away.

Dear Atul,
Thanks for replacing the audio clip with better audio quality.
After going through the lyrics of the song once again, I realised how nicely Pandit Indra Chandra has used the inter-play of words in this song. For instance the word ‘teer’ in ‘ maansarover teer’ and ‘lag gaya preet ka teer’ has been used as ‘shore’ and ‘arrow’ (baan) respectively.
Also the word ‘pyaas’ or ‘pyaasi’ is used ‘quenching the ‘thirst’. In the second instance, it is used in the context of ‘eyes becoming ‘thirsty’ when hit by a arrow of love’
