The Voice of Mukesh #15

With the previous post in this series, we stepped into Mukesh’s world of 1947. His popularity and demand continued to increase. In this year, he has recorded 20 songs for nine films. Compare this with 7 songs for five films in 1946. We do recall that 1945 was good year for him, as he struck a chord of good fortune and popularity with the iconic song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, and had recorded 8 songs for three films, seven of them for ‘Pehli Nazar’ and ‘Moorti’. So, after a slow year in 1946, Mukesh seems to be coming into his own in 1947.
After the lovely melody “Arshon Pe Sitaara Hai”, a solo song from ‘Beete Din’ (1947), here one more delightful duet that Mukesh has sung with Hamida Bano. A rare song from the film ‘But Taraash’, this melody is just so sweet and wonderful, in its own way.
With this song, the film makes its debut here on this blog. The film is from the banner of Butkadah Productions, Bombay. Information about this film relating to director, producer and list of actors is not available in the Geet Kosh. Searching other sites on the internet, I have been able to ferret out some additional information that says the film was directed by Afzal Jehangir, and a short list of actors viz., Pran, Manorama, Suresh and Arshad. I would request our knowledgeable friends and readers on this blog to please make any corrections to the above, and add more information about this film.
The music is by Ghulam Haider. One of the stalwart music directors of Punjabi and Hindi film industry in the 1940s, Haider Sb had migrated to Pakistan after the partition. He worked with the film industry in Pakistan, but could never reach the heights of popularity and success as he had in undivided India. It is noted that his friends in Bombay, and especially Lata Mangeshkar, repeatedly requested him to return to Bombay, but because of failing health, he was not able to travel. He passed away in 1953, at a very young age of 45. One can only wonder what the state of the industry would have been, had he continued his career in India. One of the earlier masters who demanded his fees, it is said that he was probably the first music director to demand and get Rs. 25,000 for a single film. With a string of success of films like ‘Khazaanchi’ (1941), ‘Khandaan’ (1942), ‘Poonji’ (1943), ‘Chal Chal Re Naujawaan’ (1944), ‘Phool’ (1945), ‘Humayun’
(1945), ‘Padmini’ (1948), ‘Majboor’ (1948), ‘Shaheed’ (1948) and ‘Kaneez’ (1949), it is no surprise that he could demand his own fees. Besides the music, he is also credited with giving Lata Mangeshkar her first big success with ‘Majboor’ (1948), and for introducing Surinder Kaur in ‘Shaheed’ (1948). He also encouraged and put on track the careers of many other music directors like Shyam Sunder, Hansraj Behl, Feroze Nizami and Husnlal Bhagatram.
This particular song is written by Amin Gilaani. A song for lovers, as they desire to go far, far away from this world – to go and build a new world for themselves. The sound of ‘Door Kahn, Door Kahin’ in the voice of Hamida Bano is so endearing. Listen, and enjoy.

The story and history of film BUTT TARASH is very interesting.Here it is……
BUtt Tarash and Khana Badosh were being made in Lahore in early
1947. Butt Tarash had Pran,manorama,Suresh,irshad and Khana Badosh had Pran,manorama,Kalawati and Ajmal. Both films were directed by Afzal jahangir and Ghulam haider was MD for both films.
When partition took place all activities of films in Lahore had stopped.
Most Hindu actors etc had shifted to India and Muslim actors to Pakistan.
Just after the partition,Pran,Manorama,Nasir Khan,Suresh,Begum para,Himalayawala,Shahnawaz,Najmul Hussain,Sadiq Ali(Minerva king),Ghouri,Charlie,Luddan,Ghulam Mohd. etc went back to Lahore, for
settlement of dues,property etc.
After observingthe poor conditions and dark future of lahore and Pakistan film industry,Pran,Manorama,Suresh,Begum para and Nasir Khan returned to India. But before returning, Nasir Khan acted in Pak’s First film Teri Yaad as a hero,Suresh completed Shahida and Do Kinarey and Pran and Manorama completed their both films, Butt Tarash and Khana Badosh.
Butt Tarash was not released in Lahore but is listed as an Indian film,and there was no trace as to what happened to Khana Badosh.
Both these film’s names do appear in the Golden Jubilee List of Pakistani Films,published in 1986,as Pakistani films. But the prints of these films are untraceable anywhere.
Since all the 11 songs of Butt tarash were recorded by Ghulam hyder in India,before going to Pakistan,these records are available here but not any record of Khana Badosh-whose songs were recorded in Lahore.They too are not available there.
The son of director Afzal jahangir is Mehmood jehangir,who is a Pakistani film director of repute.
